Washington Square Hotel

More than a century old, the once-bohemian, mid-range Washington Square Hotel now mostly attracts NYU parents and tourists with its prime Greenwich Village location (across the street and on the corner from Washington Square Park) and stunning Art-Deco-style decor. The cozy restaurant and Sunday jazz brunch are a hit with guests and locals alike, as is the lounge bar with daily happy hours. Most of the 149 rooms don't have the same pizazz found in common spaces, but higher level rooms have scenic neighborhood views. The Washington Square Hotel is a lovely base for anyone craving charm and easy access to lower New York, but those who need lots of space should upgrade to more expensive rooms. Travelers seeking a more hip downtown vibe could try The Standard, East Village.

The Marlton Hotel

The 112-room Marlton Hotel is an upscale property with an Old-World style and long history, having housed guests such as Jack Kerouac. Set in Greenwich Village, it's a couple minutes' walk from Washington Square Park, but a 15- to 30-minute drive from sights such as Times Square and Central Park. This cozy property has charming, but tiny, rooms with rainfall showers, flat-screen TVs, and bathrobes, but some are too compact to fit desks or any seating. A lobby lounge with a fireplace and cocktail and espresso bars is busy from morning until night with locals and guests alike, and the on-site restaurant serves tasty French-Mediterranean fare. All rates include breakfast with fresh-squeezed juice and coffee. It's worth considering Walker Hotel Greenwich Village, which has a fitness center and more spacious rooms.

Gansevoort Meatpacking NYC
18 Ninth Avenue At 13th Street

This 187-room Meatpacking District hotel is more than its lauded rooftop pool -- guests also score luxe 400-thread-count bedding and cool Cutler toiletries, plus free Wiis, HBO, and Wi-Fi. The nightly parade of clubhoppers outside the door can grow tiresome -- but if that's your scene, the proximity to so many excellent restaurants and bars is hard to beat.

Liberty Inn

When it comes to hourly-rate hotels, very few are as heavy-handed with sexual overtones as the Liberty Inn. The experience starts with guests selecting their room type, checking in with the man behind bulletproof glass, and walking past the vending machine stocked with condoms and sex toys. It continues with the lewd drink in-room drink menu, six channels of free porn, romantic mood lighting, and provided "exercise pillows" to help guests…uh…work out. The hotel isn't nearly as flat-out dirty as one might expect, but it's hard to spend time there and leave without feeling slightly violated.

Walker Hotel Greenwich Village

A handsome boutique property in one of New York's most historic neighborhoods, the Walker Hotel Greenwich Village is a sharp four-pearl option. The 113 rooms, while small, are tricked out with a blend of modern and Art Deco details, and rooms on the 10th floor and higher have jaw-dropping skyline views. Locally sourced minibars, high-end Frette linens and -- in some -- wraparound terraces all set this property apart from its nearby competitors. Expect to see travelers sipping coffee in the lobby lounge throughout the day, while the restaurant, Society Cafe, draws a mix of locals and tourists alike. Events like live jazz nights add to the overall throwback vibe. You won't find much like the Walker nearby, but if you need an alternative, the Incentra Village House might fit the bill.

The Jane

With shared bathrooms and hilariously small (though cleverly designed) rooms, this West Village landmark offers quirky accommodations for hipsters on a tight budget -- most rooms cost a fraction of the New York average. Pod 39 and Pod 51 hotels offer similarly priced (and sized) rooms in Midtown East, but they can't compete with The Jane's proximity to the thriving West Village and Meatpacking District neighborhoods.

Incentra Village Hotel

Befitting its small size, this 12-room heritage hotel in the West Village lacks the big features that typically warrant a three-pearl rating: in fact, there isn’t even an elevator here (which can prove daunting for anyone having to haul luggage up the steep staircase.) But there’s no attempt to be trendy either, and therein lies much of its appeal for travelers who love boutique properties but are tired of rooms with ironic accents and those almost obligatory sheepskin throws. Instead, these adults-only accommodations are tasteful, traditional and personalized enough to make you feel you’re staying at a friend’s place. All contain little kitchenettes along with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, plus some offer additional perks like a fireplace, sleeping loft or secret garden. If you’d prefer to trade intimacy for more in-house amenities, consider the much larger mid-range Washington Square Hotel; it’s an historic option nearby with a restaurant and fitness center.
