Chateau Marmont
8221 W Sunset Blvd

As Hollywood's most notorious celebrity hideaway, the Chateau Marmont is the best spot for A-list sightings, especially in its fantastic (yet reasonably priced) restaurant. Unfortunately, for tourists, most everything else disappoints. The pool's small, the gym's dark, and the standard rooms are dowdy. Book a room at the London instead, and head here for dinner to get your celebrity fix.

Grafton on Sunset
8462 W Sunset Blvd

Located right on L.A.'s famous Sunset Strip, this upscale hotel has a rock-and-roll edge and includes popular local destinations like Oliver's Prime Steakhouse and glam Bar 20. The 108 contemporary rooms are modern and bright, with a rocker sensibility plus flat-screen TVs, and the hotel has a 24-hour fitness center. The clientele is mostly couples, though a good number of families are drawn to the saltwater pool, one of the largest in the area. It could be worth comparing rates with the nearby Le Montrose Suite Hotel, which has a rooftop saltwater pool plus a tennis court.

Mondrian Los Angeles Hotel
8440 Sunset Boulevard

The 236-room Mondrian Los Angeles Hotel is a Sunset Strip icon, one with even more of a scene than the equally legendary Sunset Marquis. The design-centric hotel's common areas -- lobby, restaurant, pool, and lounges -- are all geared toward socializing. The cutting-edge style of the rooms doesn't interfere with their comfort; beginning at 325 square feet, all rooms feature king beds, minibars, separate bathroom vanity areas, and Malin + Goetz toiletries. But guests are usually more interested in spending time at the on-site dining and nightlife hot spots than staying in. Those looking for a more relaxed scene in the same neighborhood and price range might prefer the still-cool Standard, Hollywood or the low-key-but-fashionable Sofitel Los Angeles.

1 Hotel West Hollywood
8490 Sunset Boulevard

The upscale Jeremy West Hollywood is one of the newest hotels on the famous Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. Los Angeles is teeming with hip hotels, and though The Jeremy certainly fits the trendy bill, it also has a slight corporate vibe that brings a sense of dependability and order to the works. Sophisticated rooms and suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows and Mid-Century Modern and industrial touches. Extensive art, communal working space, and healthy gourmet food were designed to make millennials happy. The highlight features are Harriet's Rooftop cocktail lounge and the elevated outdoor pool -- both offer epic views and attention to stylish details. Just about the only negative is pricey valet parking. For something more classic Hollywood on Sunset Strip, check rates at the Sunset Tower Hotel, right down the street.

Andaz West Hollywood
8401 Sunset Boulevard

It's no longer as hip or famous as its West Hollywood neighbors (the Chateau, Sunset Tower, and Mondrian), but there's plenty to like about the Andaz, which was once (in)famously known as the "Riot Hyatt". The hotel boasts rotating art exhibits, a lovely rooftop pool, free Wi-Fi, and sleek rooms with sweet views and free snacks and drinks.

The London West Hollywood at Beverly Hills
1020 North San Vicente Boulevard

Just off the Sunset Strip, The London West Hollywood offers the highest levels of luxury and service at reasonable prices. With 200 beautifully appointed, 750-square-foot rooms, a rooftop pool and fitness area with panoramic views, and an upscale restaurant the hotel attracts a sophisticated set who expect service as great as the value.

Sunset Tower Hotel
8358 W Sunset Blvd

The upscale Art Deco Sunset Tower has drawn A-list celebrities since it was a luxury apartment building for stars like Marilyn Monroe. In 2005, the hotel opened as it is today (though it was renovated again in 2018), a Sunset Strip landmark with a glamorous and buzzing bar, gorgeous pool with city views, and a full spa. The 81 rooms and suites feature more of the Old School Hollywood style found in the public areas, plus they have floor-to-ceiling windows and Nespresso machines. The hotel's location on Sunset Boulevard is conducive to clubs, restaurants, and shops. Since this is a historic property, some of the room layouts are awkward and the pool is on the small side. For something more modern, The Jeremy West Hollywood opened down the street in 2018.

Sunset Marquis
1200 Alta Loma Rd

A-list rockers have been flocking to the Sunset Marquis, located steps from the Sunset Strip, since it opened in 1963 as a cheap motel for musicians. It offers 152 sleek, spacious rooms featuring up-to-date amenities -- including large flat-screen TVs, iPod docks and Molton Brown toiletries. Hotel highlights include a top-notch restaurant, a cozy bar, two pools, and a wonderful spa.

Le Parc Suite Hotel
733 N West Knoll Dr

Le Parc Suite Hotel is a pleasant upper-middle-range all-suites property located in West Hollywood, walking distance to renowned restaurants and a short drive from most major Los Angeles attractions. Its 154 suites are spacious and comfortable, featuring separate living areas outfitted with sofa beds and fireplaces, kitchenettes, and furnished balconies. The heated rooftop pool is a highlight here, as is the restaurant, serving up farm-to-table cuisine for all three main meals. The gym, though, is tiny, and there is an “amenity fee” charged on top of all room rates. Travelers wanting to stay closer to the action on Sunset Boulevard may prefer sister property Montrose West Hollywood.

Palihouse West Hollywood
8465 Holloway Dr

The Palihouse is the next best thing to having a pied-a-terre in West Hollywood. The 37 suites feel like hip urban apartments, complete with kitchens and laundry machines. The largest suites have two bedrooms and private terraces. Downstairs, the painfully hip Lobby Lounge is a communal restaurant/workspace/bar that often hosts private functions and power meetings. Mardi restaurant serves farm-to-table style menus in a gorgeous European-inspired courtyard. Upstairs, The Rooftop offers outdoor dining and cocktails with views of the Hollywood Hills. The West Hollywood location is just down the hill from world famous Sunset Strip, and walkable to several design stores and restaurants. Travelers who require a pool should check rates at The Jeremy West Hollywood, which opened in 2018, and also has a rooftop cocktail lounge and large suites.
