JW Marriott Washington, DC

A hotel built for business travelers, the four-pearl JW Marriott Hotel Washington, DC is a tempered upscale property with easy access to the city's power hubs and top tourist attractions. In fact, the hotel's location just three blocks from the White House and the city's major museums is a huge selling point. Its 777 rooms were fully renovated in 2015 and have modern furniture and modern business amenities, though Wi-Fi is only free for Marriott Rewards members. Dining options feature a full-service restaurant, evening cocktail lounge, and 24-hour room service, though there's no on-site fine dining. Other highlights include a fitness center, indoor pool, business center, and extensive meeting spaces. Travelers seeking a more stately hotel should consider The Willard Intercontinental instead, though trend-seekers might opt for the slightly cheaper W Washington DC.

The Watergate Hotel Georgetown

Made famous for its role in the downfall of President Nixon, The Watergate Hotel was given new life in 2016. The 336-room, four-and-a-half-pearl property now offers a level of luxury rarely found today among hotels in the nation's capital. All of the rooms and suites feature custom furniture, modern amenities, and Zebrano marble bathrooms. Guests also have access to a full-service restaurant, whisky bar, and rooftop bar and lounge. The spa is a stunner, and everything from the indoor pool to the full fitness center add to a stay here. There is also 27,000 square feet of function space including a magnificent grand ballroom. For a luxury hotel of this level that is more conveniently located to the city's core attractions, travelers should look to the Trump Hotel.

Washington Plaza Hotel

Opened in 1962, this upper-middle-range landmark hotel has a distinctive retro vibe and one of the city's best outdoor pools. Its 340 colorful rooms and suites pay tribute to their original design, but are also modern and practical, with coffeemakers, mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, and pillow-topped mattresses. Factor in the competitive rates, the excellent and extravagant breakfast buffet, and the hotel's proximity to major D.C. sights, and the Washington Plaza is one of the best values in town. During the off-season (when the pool is closed), guests may fare better at one of the Kimpton hotels in the area, such as the Palomar or the Madera, which have free nightly wine receptions.

Holiday Inn Washington DC - Central / White House

Holiday Inn Washington-Central/White House is an affordable mid-range hotel located a short walk from Dupont Circle and the White House. Its 212 rooms were updated in 2016 and feature bright decor, in sharp contrast to the glaringly dated lobby and all-day restaurant. On-site features include a seasonal swimming pool, a modern fitness center, meeting space for rent, a business center, and expensive (but secure) underground parking. Guests are a mix of business and leisure travelers, and kid-friendly perks such as free dining for children and sofa beds in some rooms make it a good choice for families. Travelers willing to spend a little more may want to consider the nearby Washington Plaza Hotel, another kid-friendly hotel with an extensive breakfast buffet.

The Graham Washington DC Georgetown, Tapestry Collection by Hilton

Fully renovated and renamed in 2013, The Graham Georgetown (formerly the Monticello) is a stylish and contemporary three-and-a-half-pearl property with 57 rooms. Of those, more than half are suites with sofabeds and large bathrooms. The historic Georgetown location is a major plus, and is where the hotel's namesake, Alexander Graham Bell, once resided. There's a bit of buzz here, as the seasonal rooftop lounge and speakeasy-style restaurant are wildly popular draws for guests and locals. In addition, guests who are part of the Hilton Honors loyalty program can earn points for their stays here. For travelers on a budget, it's also worth considering Georgetown Suites, which also has a similarly enviable address in Georgetown at substantially lower rates. However, it lacks the same wow factor.

Washington Marriott at Metro Center

A comfortable, reliable option just steps from a Metro subway hub and near the Verizon Center sports arena and the Washington Convention Center -- the 459-room Marriott doesn't get points for flash, but it has better service and a better gym and pool than the massive Grand Hyatt, around the corner.

The Mayflower Hotel, Autograph Collection

One of the most historic hotels in the city, the four-pearl Mayflower Hotel has 581 stylish rooms and elegant common spaces. Its location near the White House and powerful K Street corridor help make it one of the capital's see-and-be-seen hotels, especially for business travelers. A full-service restaurant, spacious 24-hour fitness center, concierge service, and extensive meeting space add to its appeal. As a result of top-to-bottom renovations between 2014 and 2016, the hotel was added to Marriott International's Autograph Collection. Rooms have fresh, but classic, appeal that includes handsome neutral tones plus features like flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and attractive bathrooms. Alternatively, it's also worth considering the Willard Hotel, which has historic character and adds a spa and 24-hour room service.

Fairmont Washington D.C. Georgetown

Located in the small West End area adjacent to Georgetown, the 415-room Fairmont is an upscale hotel known for being home to one of D.C.’s best fitness centers, complete with top-of-the-line equipment, an indoor saltwater lap pool, free group classes, and personal trainers. Although its location and services cater mostly to business travelers, the comfortable, large rooms with 49-inch HDTVs, fully stocked minibars, and coffeemakers, and its solid American restaurant with outdoor seating and seasonal menus make it an enjoyable pick for tourists as well. There are a sauna, steam bath, and whirlpool, but the hotel lacks a full spa. Those looking to get pampered may want to compare rates at the Mandarin Oriental Washington DC.

Trump International Hotel Washington D.C.

With the help of $200 million, the Trump family has turned D.C.’s iconic Old Post Office building into a 263-room hotel that aspires to be the most luxurious in the city. Guests will find beautiful rooms, a spa, steakhouse, a lounge serving wines by the spoon, modern fitness center, and a grandiose atrium lobby. Situated right between the National Mall and Downtown, the location is perfect for sightseeing and business – just don’t expect much nightlife. Visitors should also consider the nearby St. Regis, Hay-Adams, and The Willard, which have similar amenities and competitive rates.

Swann House

The four-pearl Swann House is a charming bed-and-breakfast in a quiet residential neighborhood near DuPont Circle. The circa 1883 home is classy and traditionally decorated, but not stuffy, and many of its 12 individually decorated rooms have distinctive themes. Standard amenities include robes, Nespresso coffee machines, mini-fridges, and nightly turndown, and some rooms feature decks, fireplaces, and attractive marble bathrooms. The free breakfast has delicious hot dishes, and there’s an outdoor pool in a cozy courtyard. On-site parking is available for a modest fee, but there’s no elevator service to upper-floor rooms. Rates aren’t cheap, but they're in line for the location and amenities offered. For another historic hotel at DuPont Circle, The Fairfax at Embassy Row is a good choice.
