Liaison Washington Capitol Hill

A stylish lobby, an acclaimed regional restaurant, modern guest rooms, and a hip rooftop pool and bar (open summers) makes The Liaison hotel (opened October 2008) one of the best hotels in Capitol Hill -- an area that's convenient to the Amtrak station and most major sites, but far from most of D.C.'s dining and nightlife.

The Normandy Hotel

Renovated in 2009, Normandy Hotel is a cozy 75-room property located just uphill from Dupont Circle. It offers plenty of perks, such as a wine and cheese hour, chocolate chip cookies, and in-room Nespresso machines, but lacks amenities like a pool, room service, and fitness center. The rooms are also small; however, this boutique hotel is a good value for the neighborhood. The massive Washington Hilton, located just two blocks south, has slightly larger rooms and more amenities, but is significantly more expensive.

The Eldon Luxury Suites

This upper-middle-range hotel has 50 large, apartment-style suites that were fully renovated in 2009. Modern kitchens and contemporary furnishings make Eldon a comfortable choice in downtown D.C., but it lacks basic amenities, such as a fitness center and room service. Larger downtown competitors like Renaissance, Marriott Marquis, and Embassy Suites have more perks, but Eldon offers larger rooms at significantly lower prices. Most of Washington’s famous monuments and museums are less than 10 minutes away by taxi.

Omni Shoreham Hotel

The Omni Shoreham Hotel's bread and butter are its convention services, but it's still an appealing option for leisure travelers. It's a four-pearl historic property with 834 guest rooms and tons of meeting space -- making it one of the largest hotels in D.C. Just north of Dupont Circle, it's removed from most top attractions, but a nearby metro station makes it easy to get around. The National Zoo -- with its famed giant pandas -- is only a 15-minute walk away. There's a full-service restaurant, heated outdoor pool, large modern gym, and acres of landscaped gardens. Guest rooms are spacious, but aren't updated for tech-savvy travelers and most have small bathrooms. Alternatively, check out the nearby Washington Hilton -- it's equally large but has more modern appeal.

Hampton Inn & Suites Washington DC Navy Yard

The three-pearl Hampton Inn & Suites Washington DC - Navy Yard is a great mid-range choice in the Navy Yard area, but it isn't as convenient for tourists here to see DC's top attractions. With its location next to Nationals Park, however, it’s particularly well-suited for baseball fans. Though it lacks a full-service restaurant, the hotel offers a well-rounded features package, including a free hot breakfast buffet, seasonal rooftop bar with stadium views, fitness center, and 24-hour convenience store. Its 168 clean and contemporary guest rooms and studio suites are spacious, and all come with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Suites with sofa beds are available. Travelers looking for a stay with a swimming pool and hot tub can check out the nearby Courtyard Washington Capitol Hill/Navy Yard, but it’s not as close to the stadium.

Hilton Garden Inn Washington DC Georgetown Area

The three-and-a-half-pearl Hilton Garden Inn Washington DC/Georgetown Area offers a convenient West End location and an attractive amenities package for business and leisure travelers alike. It’s a short walk to the metro stations at DuPont Circle and Foggy Bottom, and the property's highlights include a popular bistro, well-equipped fitness center, rooftop pool with nice views, concierge and room service, but there's an extra charge for breakfast. The 238 guest rooms are modern and spacious, and come nicely equipped with flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges, and microwaves, though free in-room Wi-Fi requires signing up for the chain's rewards program. Travelers looking for accommodations with full kitchens and sleeper sofas can compare rates at Avenue Suites Georgetown.

The Henley Park Hotel

Built in 1918, this well-preserved downtown property features charming old-world decor, a classy lounge bar, and a full-service restaurant. Most of Henley Park’s 96 rooms are on the small side and have only one bed -- making it a poor choice for families. The similarly priced Eldon Luxury Suites, one block away, has much larger rooms but lacks the historic allure of Henley Park. Most of Washington’s famous monuments and museums are less than 10 minutes away by taxi.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Chevy Chase Pavilion
4300 Military Road NW

Tucked inside a shopping mall on the Northwest edge of D.C., this all-suite hotel is a convenient choice for visitors who want to relax, shop, or do business in the area -- but its out-of-the-way location isn’t ideal for sightseeing. Highlights include spacious suites, a modern fitness center, indoor pool, and a restaurant and bar overlooking the mall. Large, family-friendly rooms and freebies like hot buffet breakfasts make this Embassy Suites a solid value for D.C., but beware of daily parking and Wi-Fi fees.

Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill

This 836-room Hyatt is the closest hotel to the U.S. Capitol. Highlights include a spacious indoor pool, modern gym, and a solid restaurant and bar. Well-equipped for business travelers, the property includes 38,000 square feet of meeting space, a business center, and full-service FedEx services. The hotel doesn’t have much personality or style, but it’s a good value for the area.Guests seeking a hotel with a cozier ambientce should check out the nearby Hotel George or Liaison Hotel.

Comfort Inn Downtown DC Convention Center

Situated between lively Dupont Circle and downtown D.C., this 100-room Comfort Inn is a convenient choice for business and leisure travelers. The Convention Center is four blocks away, and many tourist attractions and top restaurants are within walking distance. Rooms are simple but with modern upgrades, and include mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, iPod stereos, and free Wi-Fi. A free breakfast buffet, small fitness center, and business center make this hotel a solid value (especially for guests not paying for parking).
