Hotel Ai Cavalieri di Venezia

Housed in a 16th-century palazzo a short walk from Rialto Bridge and St. Mark’s Square, the 33-room Hotel Ai Cavalieri di Venezia is a small upscale boutique with opulent interiors and serene outdoor spaces. Rooms and all common spaces are lavishly decorated with fine antiques, upholstered walls, Murano chandeliers, and heavy drapes, and some feature original 18th-century ceiling frescoes and wooden floors. Free breakfast is served every morning in a stately dining room, and the bar is known for its talented mixologists and intimate vibe. There are few on-site amenities at Ai Cavalieri, but guests have access to a spa and a restaurant at sister property Hotel Ai Reali, located a 10-minute walk away. Travelers looking for something a little cheaper may want to consider Palazzo Paruta, also within walking distance of most major attractions.

Hotel Abbazia

The Hotel Abbazia is a three-pearl, well-kept property that's a two-minute walk from Venice's Santa Lucia train station. Its high-ceilinged lobby and sedate lounge reflect its days as a Carmelite monastery, but the rest of the hotel is rather old fashioned, including its 50 rooms with traditional furnishings and Murano glass chandeliers that feel elegant to some but stodgy to others. Some bathrooms have been updated with modern fixtures and plank paneling, but others have old fixtures and small showers or tubs. Freebies like Wi-Fi and a buffet breakfast with pancakes add to the hotel's value, and the courtyard garden with woven seating and big, white umbrellas is a refreshing spot. Overall, it's a good choice with an excellent location that attracts repeat guests, but travelers might want to compare with similar properties like Ca' dei Dogi.

Hotel Bucintoro

The 20-room Hotel Bucintoro is a unique property in Venice, with elegant decor inspired by ancient sailboats. It’s located on the eastern side of the docks, removed from the crowds but within walking distance to major attractions such as Piazza San Marco. Most rooms are small, but all feature gorgeous views of the lagoon and the city (you can even see the Campanile), as well as classy decor with wood panels and a subtle maritime theme, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and marble bathrooms. There’s not much in the way of amenities, just a business center, a bar, and a cozy breakfast room, and rates can be steep. But the quiet locale, the beautiful rooms, and the views make it a wonderful pick.

Hotel Bisanzio

Housed in a 16th-century palace, the 40-room BEST WESTERN Bisanzio is a step above other mid-range chain hotels, featuring charming Venetian decor twith antique touches and Murano glass fixtures. The location is hard to beat -- it's just off the Riva degli Schiavoni and a five-minute walk from Piazza San Marco. A complimentary hot breakfast is served and there’s a small bar with two parlors, as well as a courtyard. Decorated in 18th-century-style furnishings, rooms feature flat-screen TVs and minibars, and the hotel also offers loft suites and apartments with kitchenettes. The classic interiors are well-maintained, but might not suit all tastes and can appear dated in places. Travelers seeking something more contemporary should consider Hotel Paganelli, which is even closer to the Grand Canal and has lower rates

Hilton Molino Stucky Venice Hotel
Giudecca 810

There are 379 rooms at this upscale hotel on Venice’s Giudecca Island. It’s a quiet location away from the tourist crowds of San Marco, though a boat trip is necessary to see most major Venetian sights. The hotel has plenty of dining options plus a fabulous rooftop pool and spa -- a true rarity in central Venice. Rooms are spacious and offer a modern interpretation of traditional Venetian decor -- broad stripes, chandeliers, and wood-beam ceilings in some rooms -- and common areas embrace the former 19th -century mill's history. The hotel is best for those wanting lots of facilities on-site and who don’t mind a boat trip into the center. Those who want to be closer to the sights should check out Bauer Il Palazzo as an alternative.

JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa
Isola delle Rose, Laguna di San Marco

Set on its own private island, south of Venice's center, the luxury JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa pulls out all the stops. Opened in 2015, the hotel has 266 rooms with high-end, modern design, serene decor, sleek bathrooms, and top-notch amenities. A Michelin-starred restaurant, casual rooftop eatery, and a poolside bar are just a few of the dining options, plus there are a huge spa, three pools, and kids' club. Century-old olive groves and lagoon-facing lawns divide up facilities and terraces, and the 19th-century church makes the hotel a popular wedding destination. Regular San Marco shuttles are free, but being outside Venice's center isn't for everyone. Everything is unsurprisingly pricey, particularly when factoring in fees for in-room Wi-Fi and spa access. Luxury seekers looking to be central should compare with Baglioni Hotel Luna

Hotel Paganelli

The 21-room, upper middle-range Hotel Paganelli is a family-friendly boutique hotel built in a former Benedictine convent. Located on the waterfront at St. Mark's Bay, the hotel offers stunning views from the rooftop terrace. The on-site restaurant serves Venetian cuisine, and the bar serves pizza and finger food throughout the day. Rooms are on the small side, but are clean and chic, decorated in the Art Deco style, with gorgeous, renovated, modern bathrooms. This is a great value for this caliber, especially given the proximity to St. Mark's Square; the Ca' Riccio is another intimate, central option worth considering in this price range.

Hotel Canal

Hotel Canal is a small two-pearl hotel with overlooking the Grand Canal in the Santa Croce neighborhood. It's a bit far from St. Mark's Square and other attractions, but room rates are more affordable and the hotel is just across the canal from the train and bus stations. A free continental breakfast is served in an outdoor garden in the summer, but features are otherwise slim. The 17 rooms are done up in classical motifs and come with minibars and flat-screen TVs, and some overlook the canal. Unfortunately, air-conditioning isn't always great and Wi-Fi costs extra. The Hotel Canal is slightly cheaper than the nearby Santa Chiara Hotel, but rooms here could use an upgrade to address some cleanliness and maintenance issues.
