Vail Mountain Lodge & Spa

Vail Mountain Lodge is a four-pearl boutique ski hotel located right by Vail's Vista Bahn ski lift. Its 28 rooms, suites, and condos are spacious and cozy, and many have gas fireplaces to add to the ambience; condos also have full kitchens. Amenities include a restaurant, Terra Bistro, where a free hot breakfast and an eclectic dinner menu are offered, but lunch is not available. The gym is a highlight, with lots of equipment and a two-story climbing wall, and there's an on-site spa and a deck with two whirlpool hot tubs. Note that there's a daily resort fee and parking costs extra. Vail Mountain Lodge is a great choice for couples, but there's not much for kids and travelers with younger guests may want to consider the family-friendly Vail Village Hotel Talisa instead.

The Sebastian - Vail

This luxury boutique resort, opened in Vail in 2010, features beautiful, high-end mountain decor, particularly in the airy lobby and cozy library (no cabin kitsch here). There are two great restaurants, including the organic tapas bistro Leonora, plus a chic lounge, an outdoor pool with four hot tubs open year-round, and an upscale spa. The Luxury Plaza Rooms are on the small side, but updated decor includes beautiful wood furniture and luxurious fabrics in wintry colors. There are also roomier suites and residences with full kitchens and washer/dryers. The location right off I-70 could also be a little better: It's within walking distance of Vail Village, the slopes, and the hotel's own Base Camp (with ski rentals and a cafe), but it's not right in the heart of anything. Guests might also consider the Sonnenalp Hotel in the heart of Vail Village, which has five restaurants and bars, though less stylish decor -- and somewhat lower rates -- than The Sebastian.

Austria Haus Hotel

This upper-middle-range boutique hotel has 25 homey rooms with rustic touches (such as wood-beam ceilings and sturdy wood doors) and marble bathrooms with heated floors. Austria Haus's on-site amenities include a cozy lounge, fitness center, and small pool and attached whirlpool, plus guests get free access to the facilities at sister property The Lodge at Vail, which is a short walk away. The hotel's most notable asset may be its great central location in Vail Village square, close to the Vista Bahn ski lift. It's worth comparing Austria Haus's rates with Vail Mountain Lodge & Spa's.

Vail Racquet Club Mountain Resort
4695 Vail Racquet Club Dr.

Vail Racquet Club Mountain Resort is an upper-middle-range hotel outside of Vail that offers great views, a quiet atmosphere, and easy access to Gore Creek. The 100 condos and townhouses vary in decor but are generally spacious with kitchens, fireplaces, and patios. Though they lack full daily housekeeping, free Wi-Fi is available throughout. A seasonal restaurant, heated pool, gym, massages, and nine tennis courts are enough to keep most guests entertained. For those that want to explore, the free Vail ski shuttle conveniently stops here. Simba Run Vail Condominiums are a good alternative with an indoor heated pool and a location closer to Vail.

Marriott's StreamSide Birch at Vail

In a beautiful secluded setting west of Vail proper, the Marriott StreamSide offers upper-middle-range condo rentals in three different sections -- Evergreen, Birch, and Douglas -- with full kitchens, fireplaces, and homey mountain decor. The indoor/outdoor pool is uncommon in Vail, where most pools are outdoors, and the hotel prides itself on its free extras (free Wi-Fi, free parking, and no resort fee). But it's right next to the interstate, and you'll have to take the hotel shuttle to the slopes.

The Vail Collection at the Ritz-Carlton Residences

The Ritz-Carlton Residences are easily among the most luxurious private condo rentals in Vail Valley. The amenities are top-of-the-line: the large, year-round outdoor pool; the modern, upscale fitness center; the cozy library; and the elegant, lodge-style great room with a bar and fireplace. The huge, privately owned condos come with stainless steel kitchens, balconies (in many) with views of the pool or mountains, and gorgeous marble bathrooms with decadent soaking tubs and separate walk-in showers. In addition, the property has bell service and 24-hour maintenance.

Sonnenalp

Modeled after a traditional spa hotel in the southern German region of Bavaria, the Sonnenalp is one of Vail’s most iconic properties. Operated by Johannes Faessler, whose family founded and still operates the original European resort hotel, the Vail iteration evokes its German counterpart in architecture, decor, facilities, and welcoming atmosphere. Suites are outfitted with heavy oak furniture, gas fireplaces, and heated marble floors in the bathrooms, while the five restaurants offer both German and local cuisine. The hotel is centrally located in Vail Village, within easy walking distance of the gondola and many shops and restaurants. Every component of this luxury hotel has received an award of some sort, from its European-inspired restaurants to its bountiful spa, although some guests find the decor a bit dated and in need up updating.

Montaneros Condominiums
641 W Lionshead Cir

The mid-range Montaneros Condominiums offers a great location for skiers in the heart of Lionshead Village. Eagle Bahn Gondola is a short walk away, and bustling, touristy Vail Square is outside the hotel's front door. Amenities are limited compared to full-service hotels, with no fitness center, restaurant, bar, or breakfast. But it offers a large heated outdoor pool and two whirlpools that are open year-round, free covered parking, a laundry room, and ski equipment storage. Its 38 one- to four-bedroom residence-style condos are spacious and feature fully equipped kitchens, fireplaces, and balconies, though the individually owned units vary in decor and upkeep. Rates are competitive, given the property's desirable location. Travelers looking for a stay with a gym and sauna can consider the nearby Antlers at Vail.

Lift House Lodge
555 E Lionshead Cir

The two-and-a-half pearl Lift House Lodge is a simple hotel that attracts mostly couples and families with its self-sufficient studio-style units, conveniently located in Vail Village. The Lift House Lodge overlooks Vail's ski runs and pedestrian mall. The 45 rooms lack air-conditioning, but they have flat-screen TVs, kitchenettes, fireplaces, and balconies. The services and amenities are a bit limited here, as there are no breakfast or swimming pool. However, guests can enjoy an indoor 12-person hot tub, free Wi-Fi, and a laundry facility on-site. There are two restaurants located in the same building, though not directly in the hotel, which is a perk for visitors who don’t want to cook in their room. Destination Resorts Vail is a good alternative, with extra features like a year-round pool, hot tub, multi-bedroom apartments, and a steakhouse.

Antlers at Vail
680 Lionshead Pl

The Antlers at Vail is a three-pearl apartment-style hotel with a picturesque view of Gore Creek at the base of Vail Mountain. The quiet location gives it a secluded feel despite the bustling tourist scene, and it provides a lovely backdrop for the outdoor pool and hot tubs. Its individually owned condos differ widely in decor, and size -- with 87 studios, and one- to four-bedroom units -- but all have living areas with gas fireplaces, full kitchens, and private balconies with gas grills. Facilities are slim compared to a traditional hotel -- there's no full-service restaurant or breakfast -- but there are many perks, from on-site ski rental to free GoPro cameras. Rates start considerably cheaper at the similar Lodge at Lionshead.
