The first of two Trump Hotels in Atlantic City opened its doors back in 1984. The Trump Plaza is located at the center of all the boardwalk action -- its white and black facade rises 39 floors above the beach -- and many of the 906 rooms and suites offer incredible ocean views. The lobby, with its 80s-style gold and crystal decor, is dated, but the resort does offer appealing features such as an 800-seat theater, range of restaurants, and indoor pool. During the summer months, the Beach Bar is a hot spot for outdoor drinks and live music, but rooms lack modern touches such as flat-screen TVs and duvet covers. Fees are rampant: Expect to pay for parking, Wi-Fi, and use of the fitness center.

There's a lot to dislike about the Carlton: the lazy, indifferent staff, the "sensual" odors, the designed-by-Ikea-and-trying-too-hard-to-be-hip decor, as well as the terribly misleading website. But this is the Carlton, not the Ritz-Carlton. If you're just looking for a clean, reasonably priced place near the beach to sunbathe during the day and party by night, you could do worse.

Don't let the intimate size of the Parsons Post House Inn fool you: Most of the cozy rooms have a modern look, sporting a subtle beach theme with comfortable white linens and light sand-colored walls. The bathrooms are clean and a little cramped (counter space is practically non-existent), but they do have soft towels and good water pressure. The small but charming outdoor patio is great for taking advantage of the sea breeze coming from the beach, just a block away. If you're looking for a true Ogunquit experience, this is one of your safest bets. Note that the hotel closes during the winter months. tag:revisit 4/15/2013

The 32-room Economy Inn & Suites is a budget hotel situated on a quiet side street, about a 10-minute walk from central Gatlinburg. Many attractions and eateries are within walking distance, and others are a short drive away. Rooms are basic and dated, but they have flat-screen TVs, microwaves, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges, and some have cooktops and sinks, too. Certain bathrooms feature jetted tubs. A free continental breakfast is served daily, and parking and Wi-Fi also are free. Pets are allowed for a fee. All in all, this is a fine place for no-frills guests who will be out and about for most of their visit. Travelers who'd like something a little more modern could check out the Quality Inn & Suites Gatlinburg, where some rooms have private balconies and fireplaces.

Smack in the middle of D.C.'s business district and two blocks from the convention center, the Twelve & K Hotel Washington DC (formerly Four Points by Sheraton) is a midtier business hotel with comfortable beds, clean rooms, free internet, a well-maintained pool, helpful service, and a 24-hour gym. The area is a dead zone on nights and weekends, but downtown nightlife is eight blocks away. All in all, a safe choice for business travelers.

Makena Beach and Golf Resort is an upscale property with a laid-back vibe on family friendly Maluaka Beach. Rooms have (some) private lanais overlooking the ocean, cherry wood furniture, and granite vanities in the bathrooms. The rates here are lower than what you'll find at nearby luxury resorts, but the swimming pool is much smaller. Still, there's off-the-beach snorkeling, three restaurants, free oceanfront yoga, and a spacious fitness center. The Hawaiian Rain Forest spa helps make this hotel an attractive option for honeymooners and couples. There's no resort fee and lots of free extras like parking, Wi-Fi, and resort activities, so guests won't feel nickel and dimed. It may be worth comparing rates at nearby four-pearl Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa for many of the same features, though you'll pay for parking and Wi-Fi there.

This property was tragically impacted by Sonoma County wildfires in October 2017 and is currently closed due to the significant damage it sustained. We will update our review as soon we have more information. This 250-room Hilton has the standard amenities one would expect to find in an upper-middle-range chain hotel in the area, like a decent fitness center, a nice restaurant/bar, and a large, relaxing pool, but the rooms -- while spacious and clean -- aren't outstanding. The decor is a little outdated, and the standard rooms don't come with mini-fridges (the Junior Suites do). The rooms all do have HD flat-screen TVs, but you have to pay to use the in-room Wi-Fi.

For Elvis Presley fans looking to be near Graceland, the King’s ex-estate turned tourist spot, it’s hard to beat the across-the-street, 128-room mid-range Heartbreak Hotel in Memphis. Almost every inch of the hotel is an Elvis experience, from the nonstop Elvis movies in the lounge to the kitschy “broken” heart outdoor pool. Four themed suites are spacious and inspired by Elvis’s own living spaces, with touches such as gold piped blue drapery and mirrored walls and ceilings. However, the hotel shows wear and tear throughout. It may be worth comparing rates with the nearby Elvis-inspired Days Inn Memphis. An Elvis-themed hotel near Graceland called The Guest House, set to replace The Heartbreak Hotel, is under construction by Elvis’s estate.

Within walking distance of the monuments at the Mall and the Smithsonian, and just steps from four of the five Metro subway lines, the 370-room, convention-focused L'Enfant Plaza Hotel has an ideal location. But despite its year-round pool, the worn, outdated guest rooms are not ideal.

On paper, the 240-room LaPlaya Resort lives up to its name -- it's indeed on the beach and has a pool, as a resort usually does. However, this is a bare-bones budget property through and through, with old-fashioned decor and noticeable wear and tear. The hotel sits right on Daytona Beach, which is a plus, and there's an outdoor pool, hot tub, kids' pool, and tiki bar overlooking the ocean. The restaurant only serves breakfast, and the bar lounge features comedy shows. Rooms have kitchenettes or full kitchens, and many offer sea views from balconies or patios, but dated furnishings and damaged fixtures are hard to ignore. Travelers might want to check rates at the Hampton Inn Daytona Shores-Oceanfront, where homey rooms are a bit more modern.
