Amori Villas
Br. Dukuh, Pejeng Kawan

Amori Villas is an upscale boutique resort outside of Ubud, with seven villas set in lush jungle surrounds. While the villas vary in architecture and size, all have furnished terraces and traditional Balinese touches, plus private butler service. There's a clifftop infinity pool with superb views of the valley. Yoga sessions and communal dining encourage guest interaction. As Amori Villas lacks child-friendly facilities, it's not ideal for families with younger kids, but it's a great choice for honeymooning couples -- especially if they opt to stay in one of the more secluded villas.

Pajar House
Jl. Kelabangmoding

Pajar House Ubud is a value hotel located in the foothills of Ubud, around a 20-minute drive from downtown. The 32 rooms are spread out along three separate compounds. The Standard and Deluxe Rooms are located in a Balinese family compound and the Villas and Suites are set within pristine natural surroundings overlooking gorgeous rice fields. Each compound has a swimming pool. The rooms all feature balconies, Balinese stylings, hardwood furniture, and modern amenities, but interiors are somewhat aged. Facilities are limited as there is no spa or restaurant, though in-room spa treatments and room service are available. Free extras include breakfast, Wi-Fi, and afternoon tea. Guests looking for a more upmarket hotel with similar natural surroundings, should check out the Puri Sebali Resort

The Grand Sunti
Pengosekan Street

The 52-room Grand Sunti, at the southern end of Ubud, can be a decent budget pick if expectations are managed and you book the right room. Super Deluxe Rooms the most pleasant, with whitewashed wood furniture and modern decor (though we did spot some wear), while other categories are dated and thoroughly worn. All rooms include air-conditioning, TVs, and free Wi-Fi. The highlight here are the three garden pools, which are tranquil and lovely. There's also an open-air restaurant serving international fare. There are tons of restaurants, cafes, and shops nearby, and the Sacred Monkey Forest is only a 10-minute walk away. For lower rates and a better stock of rooms, check out Tegal Sari instead. It's closer to the Monkey Forest, but most rooms lack TVs.

Barong Resort and Spa
Jl. Monkey Forest

Barong Resort and Spa is an upper-middle-range boutique hotel with an intimate garden setting in a prime location in the heart of downtown Ubud, along Monkey Forest Street, which is lined with shops, hip cafes, galleries, and bars. The 13 bungalows and villas can include private pools and all have spacious interiors which blend traditional and modern decor. The grounds and landscaping are tastefully crafted with features like stone gates, manicured tropical greenery, and carved stone statues. On-site facilities include a swimming pool in a lush garden, a small spa, and Western/Indonesian restaurant. Parking, Wi-Fi, and village tours are free. Although the hotel is fairly well maintained, it is somewhat aged and worn -- not surprising considering the hotel opened in 2001. The nearby Komaneka at Monkey Forest has a larger pool, but rooms are pricier.

Plataran Ubud Hotel & Spa
Jl. Hanoman, Pengosekan

The 52-room, upscale Plataran Ubud Hotel & Spa is a modern oasis amid the rice fields near Ubud. The hotel's gorgeous and naturally landscaped grounds are within an easy walk of Ubud's sights, including the Sacred Monkey Forest, which is 10 minutes away on foot. Rooms and suites are spacious and contemporary, with large flat-screen TVs and frequently stunning rice field views alongside subtle Balinese accents. The hotel also offers free yoga and a fitness area, along with free breakfast, a small spa, and two restaurants. Guests looking for rustic luxury and style may want to consider nearby KajaNe Mua Private Villa & Mansion, though rates will be higher.
