Waterfront settings are commanding at the three-pearl OldWell Hotel, where Italian and international leisure travelers come for the scenic coastal location, solid dining, and attractive rates. The private beach is a bonus for the price, though don't expect much from the 12 rooms, which are small and mostly spartan, though some have funky, colorful accents. Expansive restaurant and bar terraces take in magnificent sea views amid dramatic cliff backdrops, but there are no pool, fitness center, or wellness amenities. The property is isolated, at a 10-minute drive from Tropea. Losing the beach (but not the view), Hotel Valemare is a good downtown alternative.

The three-pearl LABRANDA Rocca Nettuno Tropea is a family-friendly resort with direct beach access (via an elevator), located a 15-minute walk from the more lively town center. Its 264 rooms are dated and low on frills, outfitted with small flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and furnished balconies -- some with gorgeous sea views. Although the gorgeous private beach and beautiful outdoor pool are free for all guests, many of the perks of staying here -- the disco, hammam, and sports courts -- are only free for those on the all-inclusive package. Food at the main buffet restaurant receives mixed reviews, though the a la carte eateries are reportedly better quality. Couples may prefer the more charming and intimate Hotel Rocca Della Sena, though it lacks a swimming pool.
