Gladstone Hotel

Housed in a historic, Victorian building, The Gladstone Hotel embodies the Art and Design District's marriage of old-school allure and new-school funk. Each of this mid-range hotel's 37 rooms is designed by a different artist, and features modern amenities like Samsung Galaxy Tablets, flat-screen TVs, and organic toiletries -- though some rooms are pretty small and street noise can be an issue. The hotel has a full-service restaurant and offers free access to a nearby gym, but the Melody Bar, open into the night, is the property's most popular hangout spot. Guests looking to be closer to the action in downtown might consider the Hotel Victoria, another historic property, with less artsy, more sophisticated decor.

Hotel Le Germain Maple Leaf Square

This 167-room property, a part of the Maple Leaf Square complex, is a modern hotel with a convenient downtown location. The rooms come complete with modern amenities (large flat-screen TVs and iPod docks), cool open bathrooms (that can be made family-friendly with shades and doors), and sleek white-and-black decor -- although the muscle-centric photographs above the beds are a bit odd. The hotel has two cool lounges, but there is no restaurant -- and unlike at other luxurious downtown Toronto hotels, there is no pool.

The Westin Toronto Airport

The upscale Westin Toronto Airport is a modern and stylish hotel, thanks to a $10 million renovation in 2016-17 that upgraded public spaces and all 290 guest rooms. Its convenient location, just three minutes from Toronto Pearson International Airport via the hotel’s free shuttle, keeps it bustling with activity. Highlights include multiple on-site dining options, indoor pool, excellent 24-hour fitness center, concierge, and on-site parking. Guest rooms are spacious and classy, with wood floors, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and rainfall showerheads, but microwaves aren't standard, and in-room Wi-Fi is only free for Starwood Preferred Guest members. Travelers who want to pay less for accommodations that are close to the airport can consider Holiday Inn Toronto Airport East.

Hilton Garden Inn Toronto Downtown
92 Peter St

The Hilton Garden Inn Toronto Downtown is a mid-range modern property in the Entertainment District, surrounded by nightclubs that can get noisy, though the 224 rooms tend to stay quiet. On weekends, late-night revelers stay here, but during the week, business travelers make use of the 24-hour business center, two meeting rooms, and the location near the Financial District. The contemporary restaurant and lounge can also be rented out for private functions. A 24-hour mini market, indoor pool, and hot tub add to the on-site perks. Competitively priced rooms have flat-screen TVs, microwaves, mini-fridges, and some have whirlpool tubs and fireplaces. For a property in a quieter area, try the Grand Hotel Toronto.

Delta Hotels by Marriott Toronto Airport & Conference Centre
655 Dixon Road

The International Plaza Hotel Toronto is a 433-room hotel located less than three miles away from Toronto Pearson International Airport and a five-minute drive to the Woodbine Shopping Centre. With five on-site dining venues, extensive meeting spaces, and a large pool with two waterslides, this three-and-a-half pearl hotel is a practical base for business travelers or those en route to and from the airport. A large fitness center and gift shops give the hotel a resort-like vibe. However, its run-of-the-mill room decor may disappoint guests looking for a hotel with more personality. It’s worth comparing the rates with the nearby Crowne Plaza Toronto Airport, which offers similar amenities and a larger number of renovated guest rooms.

Park Hyatt Toronto

The sophisticated, 291-room Park Hyatt has all the trappings you'd expect from one of Toronto's top luxury hotels -- a great spa,(though travelers should note that it's closed for renovations until 2019) a terrific fine dining restaurant, a rooftop bar with gorgeous views, excellent service -- but the decor feels a tad plain and dated for a property of this caliber. It's not quite at the same level as other Park Hyatt's in North America, like the divine Park Hyatt Washington D.C. The location right on Bloor Street, however -- home to some of the city's best high-end shopping -- is hard to beat.

Holiday Inn Toronto Yorkdale
3450 Dufferin St

The 370-room, three-pearl Holiday Inn Yorkdale is a solid choice for all kinds of travelers. The family-friendly chain hotel, where kids eat free, has a large Mediterranean-style atrium with an indoor pool, entertainment area, and supervised kids’ activities. It’s located across the street from Yorkdale Shopping Centre's subway station, movie theater, and 250 shops and restaurants. Rooms are of the chain variety, a bit drab, but with Keurig coffeemakers. Parking and Wi-Fi aren’t free, and there are attractive downtown alternative properties like the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Toronto Downtown.

Windsor Arms Hotel
18 Saint Thomas St

The four-and-a-half-pearl Windsor Arms Hotel combines period elegance with modern luxuries, making it a favorite boutique among Hollywood A-listers. There are 28 spacious and elegant rooms in the restored 1920s building, and they come with top-notch amenities like iPod docks, dedicated Wi-Fi routers, and dumbwaiters for discreet around-the-clock room service. Still, the decor is looking a little dated. The hotel’s location couldn’t be better -- it's tucked down a quiet street in Toronto’s prime shopping district, Bloor-Yorkville. There’s an elegant spa and salon, an indoor saltwater pool, and an extensively equipped gym. A meager breakfast is included in rates, and the restaurant and tea room are well regarded locally. For a similarly historic property with significantly lower rates, try the four-pearl Omni King Edward Hotel.

Crowne Plaza Toronto Airport

The Crowne Plaza Toronto Airport is a mid-range chain hotel located less than two-and-a-half miles from Toronto Pearson International Airport and half-a-mile from the Toronto Congress Centre. The neighborhood around the hotel is isolated and unexciting, though there are restaurants within walking distance. 489 guest rooms are more practical than stylish and include a coffeemaker, mini-fridge, and flat-screen TV. Perks include a free airport shuttle, decent fitness center, free Wi-Fi, and La Brasserie restaurant, but breakfast costs extra. The nearby Sheraton Toronto Airport Hotel & Conference Centre has an indoor pool and rooms with Starbucks coffee, but rates are higher.

Studio 6 Toronto
165 Grange Ave

Studio 6 Toronto is a two-pearl hotel located on the outskirts of the city’s Chinatown neighborhood. The 75 rooms at this hotel are cheerful and modern, although detail-oriented guests may notice a few flaws in the workmanship. In-room kitchens offer stovetops and full-size fridges, and there are a number of reasonably-priced dining options a 10-minute walk away. The hotel is within 600 feet of public transit, making it a convenient base for exploring the city; but guests looking for on-site amenities may be disappointed by the hotel’s limited facilities. The nearby Hilton Garden Inn Toronto has nicer rooms and facilities, but prices are higher.
