MainStay Suites
410 Pine Mountain Rd

The two-and-a-half-pearl MainStay Suites is a clean, family-friendly hotel with 129 apartment-like suites with kitchenettes and lots of space. The indoor and outdoor swimming pools and lazy river are a big selling point here. Other good amenities like free hot breakfast, a small gym, laundry room, and large convention center are nice too. The hotel is a bit removed from the main strip of Pigeon Forge, which might be a pro for those who want a little more peace and quiet. For something right in the middle of the action, consider the Comfort Inn & Suites Dollywood Lane, a similar hotel with the added perk of a hot tub.

Quality Inn
2708 Parkway

The 198-room Shular Inn Hotel is a value property that has cozy, homey charm right in the middle of Pigeon Forge's main attractions. Rooms are fairly stylish for this price range and offer mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and microwaves; some have stoves, full-size refrigerators, stone fireplaces, and jetted tubs. The seasonal outdoor pool area has a beautiful stone hot tub and a kiddie pool while the indoor pool facilities also include include a sauna and hot tub. The free breakfast receives good reviews and there is free Wi-Fi throughout. However, guests must walk between buildings to access certain amenities.

Hidden Mountain Resort
475 Apple Valley Rd, Great Smoky Mountains

The secluded Hidden Mountain Resorts is a family-owned cabin rental operation, split into two areas, with 300 cabins and counting. It's in a great location for those looking to be off the beaten path, while still providing relatively easy access to the area's attractions -- including Dollywood -- via the nearby Parkway. No on-site bars or restaurants mean making use of the kitchens, or driving, because there's no dining in walking distance from most of the cabins (save for a few on the eastern edge of the resort). Most are well-kept and furnished, with some superbly decorated, but guests should be aware that some have serious cleanliness and/or insect issues that may need to be addressed upon arrival. The similar Gatlinburg Falls Resort (about 25 minutes down the Parkway) has more cookie-cutter cabins, but also more included amenities.

Resort at Governor's Crossing
225 Collier Dr

The 158-room Resort at Governor’s Crossing is an upper-middle-range condo-style property with a lively atmosphere that includes indoor and seasonal outdoor water parks. Modern but bland condos have full kitchens, jetted tubs, and flat-screen TVs, and some have washer/dryers, balconies with nature views, and fireplaces. However, some have tube-style TVs and only limited housekeeping is provided -- daily service costs extra. A fitness center, free outdoor parking, and free Wi-Fi are offered, but there is no on-site restaurant. The resort is geared towards families with kids, but it is outside of Pigeon Forge proper. For a kid-friendly budget spot right in Pigeon Forge, try the Clarion Inn, which has a waterslide and can be cheaper, though there are outside noise issues.

Wilderness at the Smokies Resort
1424 Old Knoxville Hwy

This water park resort has mountain-lodge themed rooms designed for families, with bunks and Murphy beds; even the most basic room categories have microwaves. Access to three separate, on-site water parks (two outdoor and one indoor) is included in the rate, although the activities in the large adventure center -- including mini-golf, arcade games, a bowling alley, and laser tag –- are not. There are seven different eateries on-site, although food prices can add up. The secluded resort is about 30 minutes from both Gatlinburg and Knoxville, but next to a convention center and the Sevierville Golf Club. This time-share property shares grounds with a Wyndham, so guests should expect varying room quality and a sales pitch.

Riverhouse Motor Lodge
610 River Rd

The 44-room Riverhouse Motor Lodge is a comfortable two-pearl property on a peaceful tree-lined stream with fishing, two blocks from downtown Gatlinburg’s main strip. Old-fashioned rooms are clean with stone fireplaces, mini-fridges, microwaves, and some have balconies on the stream and two-person whirlpool tubs. Unfortunately rooms also have dim lighting. There are a clean outdoor pool and a kids' pool and a ramp leading to the second floor for travelers with children in strollers or those with limited mobility. A continental breakfast featuring homemade donuts and fresh coffee is delivered to rooms every morning, but rooms lack coffeemakers.
