La Copa Inn Beach Hotel
350 Padre Blvd.

The La Copa Inn Beach Hotel offers a great waterfront location with easy access to the beach over a pretty wooden walkway. The hotel resembles the local La Quinta Inn, but is slightly more polished. This is a beach hotel for the budget-conscious, with tired hallways and furniture, but a nice outdoor pool with plenty of lounge space. The outstanding feature here is the waterfront location on a popular beach at the southern end of South Padre Island's hotel sprawl. The basic fitness center and small business center are somewhat lackluster, but there's a small snack bar near the swimming pool. Rooms are simple and some offer balconies. While free Wi-Fi and daily breakfast make this hotel great value for the appealing location, some guests complain about wear and tear.

Peninsula Island Resort & Spa
340 Padre Blvd

Peninsula Island Resort & Spa is an older mid-range vacation property catering to families and groups on a budget. Most of the 70 units here are apartments with cooking facilities and sofa beds, but even standard rooms feature furnished balconies, free Wi-Fi, coffeemakers, and minibars. Maintenance, however, seems to be lacking, and there have been complaints of sloppy housekeeping. The main courtyard houses a large pool with two whirlpools, a giant chess board, and lots of lounge chairs. A wooden path links to the beach in the distance, where there are more lounge chairs still. Other amenities include a spa that uses Aveda products, a small (and dark) gym, and a restaurant with limited weekday hours. It's worth considering Isla Grand Beach Resort nearby, which offers rooms and condos and features sleeker amenities. Rates, however, are generally higher there.

Isla Grand Beach Resort
500 Padre Blvd

Isla Grand Beach Resort is a mid-range beachfront property with 193 rooms and condos. Rooms are simple and motel-like, featuring dated decor and some maintenance issues, while condos are considerably more contemporary and come with fully equipped kitchens. Facilities here are lovely, especially the two outdoor pools, which are big enough for swimming and offer plenty of colorful loungers. Dining options are varied and good, and include a buffet with themed nights, a seasonal poolside grill, and an outdoor eatery with live music and sunset views. While most guests are vacationers, the hotel gets its fair share of business travelers, owing largely to the massive amount of on-site meeting space here. Travelers may want to also consider Pearl South Padre, which has similar amenities plus a spa and more contemporary rooms.

Suites at Sunchase
1004 Padre Blvd

The 87-room Suites at Sunchase is a quirky hotel converted from a former shopping center. It is located right on South Padre Island's main street, Padre Boulevard, but not right on the beach. The hotel features contemporary, well-equipped rooms that feel stylish and spacious, but there are no balconies or exceptional views. Additional in-room amenities include mini-kitchens with sinks, microwaves, and mini-fridges. A curvy pool surrounded by palm trees is a nice feature, although it is next to the road. While the lobby feels like a shopping mall and the top-level lounge can be noisy due to loud music, there is free covered parking and an on-site spa. Though its rates are a little higher, the Pearl South Padre may be worth the upgrade, thanks to its beachfront location (and beach-facing pool).

Ramada South Padre Island
6200 Padre Blvd.

The two-pearl Ramada Hotel & Suites South Padre Island offers a solid value for budget-conscious travelers who don’t mind staying in a motel-style property. This hotel is a brief walk from the beach and quick drive to the convention center. Highlights include a restaurant that serves free continental breakfast and other meals, spacious outdoor pool, laundry room, and free parking and Wi-Fi. A fitness center is also on the premises, but it’s cramped and has outdated equipment. Rooms are tidy, brightly decorated, and equipped with mini-fridges, microwaves, safes, and coffeemakers. Some rooms even have whirlpool tubs and kitchens, but thin walls and noisy air-conditioning units can be an issue. Compare rates with the nearby Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites South Padre Island.

Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites- South Padre Island
6502 Padre Blvd.

Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites South Padre Island is located on the quiet, northern end of the island. Spacious rooms are modern and offer free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and microwaves. The resort has a big outdoor pool with relaxing tropical decor and an outdoor shower for rinsing off from the beach, but is lacking in other amenities -- including a decent fitness center. While this hotel is not located directly on the beach, it is only a three-minute walk away along a paved walkway. Additional perks include free breakfast every morning and convenient work desks with ergonomic chairs, but the rooms do lack dramatic views that other South Padre Island hotels offer.

Schlitterbahn Beach Resort
100 Padre Blvd

The family-oriented Schlitterbahn Beach Resort offers mid-range rooms and plenty of fun in the sun and water. The beachfront property on the quiet southern tip of South Padre Island has a sprawling indoor/outdoor waterpark with tons of features that stay open all year. Seafood restaurants, a swim-up bar, small fitness center, and free parking and Wi-Fi are additional highlights. The 221 guest rooms are spacious and well equipped with microwaves and mini-fridges. But, bathrooms are cramped, there are no balconies, and reviews of housekeeping and upkeep are mixed. This is also a popular resort for wedding and other social events, thanks to facilities for up to 700 people. Note that water park day passes are available to the public. For something slightly quieter, the nearby Pearl South Padre is also on the beach and has a huge outdoor pool and full-service spa for similar rates.

Pearl South Padre
310 Padre Boulevard

The upper-middle-range Pearl South Padre is a family- and pet-friendly beach resort featuring 256 rooms, all with full or partial ocean views. Condos with kitchens and up to three bedrooms are also available for rent through the hotel, but their decor is inconsistent. Amenities include plenty for kids, with a special kids' pool next to the resort's expansive main resort pool and a kids' camp open during the summer vacation months. There's also a main restaurant and a second seasonal restaurant by the main pool with a swim-up bar. Wi-Fi and parking are covered under the daily resort fee. Travelers may want to compare rates at the nearby Isla Grand Beach Resort, which has similar features plus tennis courts, but no spa.

La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham South Padre Island Beach
7000 Padre Boulevard

La Quinta Inn & Suites South Padre Island is a value beachfront hotel with 147 spacious rooms, a couple of which have jetted tubs and/or balconies with sea views. All are pleasant and have microwaves, minibars, and coffeemakers -- useful as the hotel only serves breakfast (for free). Drinks, a pool table, and board games are available at the bar, while the poolside joint serves up small bites and drinks. The property is within walking distance of many area restaurants, plus next door to popular Clayton's Beach Bar. The ocean-view outdoor pool is particularly pleasant, with ample loungers and a splash pool for kids. Other facilities include a small fitness center and business center, plus free Wi-Fi and parking. Travelers may also want to consider the slightly nicer (and pricier) Hilton Garden Inn South Padre Island, though breakfast there costs extra.

Hilton Garden Inn South Padre Island
7010 Padre Blvd

The 156-room Hilton Garden Inn South Padre Island has a scenic, oceanfront location with easy access to gorgeous, sandy beaches via a charming boardwalk. Rooms are comfortable with spacious balconies -- some with ocean views, some with city views -- and flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi (parking is also free). The fitness center and huge outdoor swimming pool with plenty of lounge chairs are also perks. Note that some guests complain about noise due to thin walls and events in the hotel ballroom. For slightly higher rates, Isla Grand Beach Resort down the beach offers more features, like bars, tennis courts, and a nightclub.
