Alder Inn
1072 Ski Run Blvd

The lower-middle-range Alder Inn is a solid choice for families and other travelers seeking affordable accommodations in a central South Lake Tahoe location. This 24-room, family-run property enjoys a quiet location amidst towering pines that’s still a short walk to the lake and a brief drive to the Nevada casinos and the gondola at Heavenly Mountain Resort. It’s a two-story, motel-style property with exterior corridors, no elevator, and limited amenities. But it does have a nice heated pool, whirlpool, and outdoor recreation and picnic area with many games. Rooms are clean and individually decorated with contemporary furnishings including Keurig coffeemakers, microwaves, robes, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. Rates are attractive, but don’t include breakfast (no food is available on site). It's worth comparing rates with the nearby Postmarc Hotel and Spa Suites.

Deerfield Lodge at Heavenly
1200 Ski Run Blvd

Deerfield Lodge at Heavenly is a mid-range property located in South Tahoe, a 10-minute walk from the famous lake. The convenient setting is also walking distance from restaurants, ski rentals, and Heavenly Ski Resort. Most guests stay here because of the 22 contemporary rooms and suites with kitchenettes and fireplaces. Some suites have two-person jetted tubs and master bedrooms with fireplaces. The quiet property has few on-site features, there's no restaurant or whirlpool. However, continental breakfast is served and there is an outdoor barbecue area and a nice living room-style lobby with a huge stone fireplace. The Lodge appeals to outdoorsy families and couples (and their pets) that plan to be out skiing and exploring all day. As an alternative, Marriott’s Timber Lodge has a restaurant and huge outdoor pool, only slightly higher rates.

The Landing Resort & Spa
4104 Lakeshore Boulevard

With elegant chalet decor and a host of amenities, the Landing Resort & Spa offers a luxury stay across from a private beach on Lake Tahoe and near Heavenly Village and the Stateline casinos. Its 77 stylish rooms have fireplaces, mini-fridges, Keurig coffeemakers, private balconies or patios (some with lake views), and luxurious bathrooms with heated floors and toilet seats. There's a restaurant that serves Greek and Californian fare and has a lovely patio overlooking the lake, though there are reports of slow service. For a dose of pampering, guests can head to the on-site spa, which has a sauna and steam room, and there’s also an outdoor pool with a hot tub. Rates are pricey, however, plus there's a mandatory resort fee covering the facilities and services like Wi-Fi and valet parking. For a larger resort with more features, travelers could try The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe, however, rates tend to be higher.

Big Pines Mountain House of Tahoe
4083 Cedar Ave

Big Pines Mountain House of Tahoe is a budget hotel with a central location in South Lake Tahoe. Many of the areas attractions, including restaurants, skiing resorts, casinos, shops, and private beach on Lake Tahoe, are within walking distance. Only some of the 70 guest rooms have been refurbished, though all include amenities like flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, microwaves, and free Wi-Fi. Some rooms include fully-equipped kitchenettes and/or fireplaces. While there's a free buffet breakfast, guests have complained of it being quite limited with no hot options. The heated outdoor swimming pool (in the summer months) is a bonus for a hotel within this category. Travelers can also consider Rodeway Inn Casino Center for the same price, and with a hot tub and better free breakfast.

Marriott's Timber Lodge
4100 Lake Tahoe Boulevard

Marriott’s Timber Lodge is a three-pearl property that offers a solid lineup of amenities, located in the heart of bustling Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe. Skiers can hop on the adjacent gondola for easy access to the slopes, and a private beach (free passes provided) on the lake is a short walk away. Features include a large outdoor pool surrounded by four whirlpools, well-equipped fitness center, full-service restaurant/bar, plus free ski valet service. The 264 apartment-style units range from studio suites to three-bedroom villas with balconies and fireplaces. All have equipped kitchens and ample space. Travelers looking for a step up can consider Timber Lodge's sister property, the upscale Grand Residences by Marriott, Tahoe, which has a full-service spa.

Best Choice Inn South Lake Tahoe
954 Park Ave

When it comes to the 15-room Best Choice Inn South Lake Tahoe, a typical roadside motel, what you see is what you get: an inexpensive, no-frills, budget property that’s in the center of Heavenly Village, near the beach, casinos, and the Heavenly gondola. Spacious rooms -- some updated and others old-fashioned -- have flat-screen or tube TVs, gas fireplaces, mini-fridges, and microwaves. Aside from on-site parking and brochures in the lobby, there are no extra perks here. It's worth comparing rates with the nearby Secrets Inn, which has a lounge and outdoor seating as well as suites with fireplaces and jetted tubs.

Secrets Inn
924 Park Ave

The adult-only Secrets Inn is a romantic getaway geared toward couples seeking a good value and a central location that's within walking distance of the Heavenly gondola, casinos, shops, restaurants, and a private beach on Lake Tahoe. Its 22 suites feature heart-shaped whirlpool tubs and fireplaces, plus some have cozy log cabin decor. Thin walls means noise can be an issue, however, especially when whirlpool tubs are turned on. Though the property doesn't offer many amenities, there's an outdoor lawn with a fire pit as well as a lobby lounge, but its shared with the neighboring sister property. Travelers should also consider the nearby Forest Suites Resort at Heavenly Village, which has a pool and offers comparable rates.

Americana Village
3845 Pioneer Trl

Americana Village is a two-pearl motel that’s a good jumping-off point to enjoy all that South Lake Tahoe has to offer. The 74 rooms have contemporary and homey decor, flat-screen TVs, and kitchenettes, though no air-conditioning. Free breakfast includes freshly fried doughnuts, and there are many other amenities like an Activity Center, heated outdoor pool, hot tub, DVD library, and bikes, snowshoes, and sleds to borrow. The hotel is less than a 20-minute walk to gondolas, dining options, shopping, and Montbleu Casino. Seven Seas Inn is a good alternative for couples, as it has a more modern design and is closer to the gondola and casino.

Stardust Lodge
4061 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

The two-and-a-half-pearl Stardust Lodge is a charming property in central South Lake Tahoe that’s been nicely updated. The family-friendly, motel-style hotel is across the street from the Heavenly Village and a short walk from the lake and Nevada casinos. It has a casual and fun environment, with group activities and loaner bicycles and other sports equipment. Other freebies include continental breakfast, parking, and Wi-Fi. It also has a fitness center and a spacious pool and whirlpool that stay open all year. Suites have well-equipped kitchenettes and roomy walk-in showers, though Studio Suites are rather small, and there’s no air-conditioning or elevator service to second-floor rooms. The nearby Holiday Inn Express South Lake Tahoe offers newly upgraded accommodations and a better free breakfast, but rates are often higher.

Postmarc Hotel and Spa Suites
3696 Lake Tahoe Blvd

Stylish and budget-friendly, Postmarc Hotel and Spa Suites caters to couples, particularly honeymooners, with a wedding chapel, gazebo in the garden, and off-site venues at the lake and beach. The location is an easy walk to the lake and close to the Heavenly gondola, but Tahoe's casinos are a drive away. Romantic, cabin-style rooms have whirlpool or soaking tubs, two-person European showers, and mirrored walls. Suites -- including jungle and Western themes -- have fireplaces. For more amenities, travelers could try the Forest Suites Resort at Heavenly Village.
