Hotel Nova Sintra
Largo Afonso de Albuquerque No 25

The two-and-a-half-pearl Hotel Nova Sintra is a charming small hotel located on the outskirts of Sintra, a three-minute walk from Sintra Station. It's situated in a 19th-century house with a lovely garden terrace overlooking the mountains. The hotel's 10 guest rooms have pleasant, cheery decor, and some have terraces and mountain views. Most guest rooms have AC and flat-screen TVs (some are old tube-style models), but there are no kettles. Highlights include a Portuguese restaurant offering a free breakfast that gets high marks from guests. There's also free coffee, juice, and tea in the lobby, and Wi-Fi throughout. Travelers looking to stay closer to the town center and don't mind spending more can consider Sintra Boutique Hotel.

Sintra Boutique Hotel
Rua Visconde de Monserrate 48

Opened in 2012, the Sintra Boutique Hotel is an upscale property with an excellent location. It's situated in the historic center, walking distance from sights and restaurants. Housed in a historic building, the family-owned hotel combines traditional and modern-contemporary decor. The 18 stylish rooms have minibars, espresso-makers, and digital music players, as well as views toward the national palace. The relaxing terraces with views of the lush surrounding landscape give a spot to linger. Breakfast is free at the hotel's contemporary Portuguese restaurant and meeting rooms are also available. Parking is tricky, however, as there are only a few spots on-site. For a more traditional hotel, it's worth considering Hotel Sintra Jardim, which has a swimming pool and slightly lower rates, though is farther from the historic center.

Tivoli Palácio de Seteais
Rua Barbosa Du Bocage 8

The 30-room Hotel Tivoli Palacio de Seteais is housed in an elegant 18th-century palace perched on a hill overlooking the Sintra Mountains. Ornate interiors are filled with numerous genuine antiques and have a refined, elegant style that extends to the guest rooms, which offer modern amenities like Nespresso machines and flat-screen TVs. Views are stunning from many vantage points, including the outdoor pool and fine-dining restaurant. The lack of free Wi-Fi in rooms is a disappointment, and a few corners of the hotel could use attention, though standard rates are impressively reasonable for such lavish hotel in a truly picturesque setting. For a cheaper -- and far less extravagant -- option in Sintra town, take a look at Hotel Tivoli Sintra.

Hotel Sintra Jardim
Travessa dos Avelares 12, Sao Pedro de Sintra

Two-pearl Hotel Sintra Jardim is set in beautiful grounds on the edge of the Sintra National Park. It's a historic house with basic features, and the appeal is found mostly in the natural surroundings and classic touches. Restaurants and attractions in Sintra are within a 15-minute walk, though the single track roads can be a bit hairy. There's a convenient tourist bus nearby, too. The hotel's pretty gardens include a pool and a nice terrace overlooking the valley. Breakfast is served in a bright dining room, though you'll have to find lunch and dinner elsewhere. The 15 rooms are large and traditional, and include TVs and Wi-Fi, but there's no air-conditioning and bathrooms are tired. For an option closer to town, consider Hotel Nova Sintra instead, which adds a traditional Portuguese restaurant.

Tivoli Sintra Hotel
Praca da Republica

The two-and-a-half-pearl Hotel Tivoli Sintra, just opposite the National Palace and amid the town's touristy heart, certainly has its location going for it. However, things inside the hotel tend to feel unintentionally held over from previous decades. The 77 rooms are a bit of a let down, and many could do with updating. While some have been given an overhaul, others still have old decor and features like tube TVs. They are spacious, though, and Superior Rooms have huge balconies with spectacular valley views. The restaurant and bar have those same views and offer meals all day. Travelers who'd like a few more features might consider staying at the Hotel Sintra Jardim just outside the town instead, which has an authentic period finish and gorgeous grounds plus an outdoor pool.
