Silver Cloud Inn - Seattle Lake Union

Two miles north of downtown overlooking a lake, the mid-range Silver Cloud Inn Seattle/Lake Union offers lots of bang for the buck away from the bustle of downtown. The hotel, part of a Pac-Northwest mini-chain, has lots of free perks including downtown shuttle service, secured parking, breakfast, and free Wi-Fi. Features go above and beyond as well: The indoor pool and hot tub and the fitness center are open 24 hours, and a large, comfortable third-floor lounge has a fireplace and a great lake view. The 184 rooms are contemporary and comfortable (if not stylish), and many have fireplaces. Those who prefer to be downtown should consider the boutique Mayflower Park, which has old-time elegance and a great location but no pool and limited technology.

Kimpton Alexis Hotel

This upscale boutique hotel, featuring 121 eclectic guestrooms that cater to every possible personality, is about as perfectly located as a downtown hotel can be. Many of Seattle’s most desirable sightseeing destinations are within easy walking distance, as are a vast selection of top-notch restaurants. It also sits right on First Avenue, directly above Puget Sound; a few rooms do have partial water views but many face neighboring buildings. Better harbor views can be found at hotels a few blocks north.

Courtyard Seattle Downtown/Pioneer Square

Luxurious it isn’t, but the Courtyard Seattle Downtown/Pioneer Square gets big points for its lively, well-chosen locale and no-nickel-and-diming attitude. Contemporary rooms may be on the small side, but they're pretty stylish for a chain and have up-to-date tech features. Given the captivating, historic neighborhood, you’ll likely spend little time in them.

Loews Hotel 1000, Seattle

This upscale hotel is located smack-dab in the heart of Downtown Seattle, within walking distance of major attractions like the Pike Place Market and the waterfront. It has gorgeous amenities that make it stand apart from most other hotels in the area, including a virtual golf system, a full-service spa with a wonderful (and expensive) menu of personalized treatments, and an acclaimed (and locally popular) restaurant on-site. The sexy, glass-enclosed bathrooms with tubs that fill from the ceiling and separate walk-in showers are arguably the highlight of the high-tech and modern (though somewhat dark) rooms. Overall, it's certainly luxurious, but the feel is that of a glossed-up Westin or Kimpton -- it lacks the nuances of a truly high-end brand, such as Rosewood.

Hyatt At Olive 8

You almost can’t go wrong with the Hyatt at Olive 8, which is known for its exceptionally high customer ratings, environmentally conscious design, and easy, walk-to-everything location. If you’re looking for a romantic lobby in which to have cocktails, you might want to head across the street to the dark and elegant Grand Hyatt; otherwise, be prepared to happily stay put.

Inn at El Gaucho
Ste. 101 2200 Western Avenue Downtown Seattle Seattle

Located smack-dab in the epicenter of downtown Seattle’ popular Belltown neighborhood, The Inn at El Gaucho is an intimate, second-story boutique hotel on top of El Gaucho steakhouse, featuring 18 spacious rooms. The hotel is ultra-convenient -- it’s walking distance to almost every popular Seattle attraction -- but has limited services (no elevator, no gym), so if you’re looking for a bit of pampering and luxury, you’ll probably want to head to a larger, more traditional venue.

Sheraton Grand Seattle

Mammoth in size (1,258 rooms), and neutral in charm, the Sheraton capitalizes on its ultimate draw: location, location, location. You can literally walk to every Seattle attraction from this hotel, situated in the epicenter of downtown Seattle. Even heading over to the Seattle Center Space Needle is a mere two-minute Monorail ride away.

MarQueen Hotel

Built in 1918 as an engineering school, the lower-middle-range MarQueen has a distinctive historic vibe and 59 elegant rooms with small kitchens. Situated in Seattle’s Lower Queen Anne district, within easy walking distance of Key Arena and the Seattle Center, this hotel is best suited to travelers who appreciate historic boutique hotels -- and don’t mind the stairs and signs of age, particularly in bathrooms, that come with it. The property also has a chic lounge/bar that hosts live music. The Maxwell Hotel is another historic boutique hotel in the neighborhood, with a pizza restaurant on-site.

Seattle Marriott Waterfront

There are very few Seattle hotels this close to the water, so if you want to enjoy everything this scenic city has to offer -- with an emphasis on harbor attractions and cruise access – the Marriott is a great pick. But note that not all of the rooms capitalize on the water views, balconies are small, and the five-minute trek to Pike Place Market is all uphill. For truly (and consistently) stunning Puget Sound views, consider The Edgewater, an upscale lodge-style hotel on Pier 67, with comparable rates, but no pool.

Pan Pacific Seattle

This elegant, contemporary luxury hotel is an excellent choice for travelers with business in northern Belltown or South Lake Union. That said, its location is a bit of a schlep to major tourist sights and the coveted waterfront, though Pan Pacific redresses this with free shuttle service to the downtown area. All 153 rooms have a clean, serene design, plus features like flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffee machines, free Wi-Fi, and bathrooms with large Japanese soaking tubs and separate rainfall showers. The 24-hour fitness center with saunas and a whirlpool is excellent, and other hotel perks include ample meeting space, a lobby bar/restaurant, and a 24-hour business center. Leisure visitors wanting a more heart-of-the-action location may want to consider the Inn at the Market, the only hotel in Downtown Seattle's Pike Place Market.
