San Ysidro Ranch, a Ty Warner Property
900 San Ysidro Ln

Although San Ysidro Ranch was not directly impacted by December 2017 wildfires in the region, the property is temporarily closed to perform extensive cleaning to ensure the health and safety of staff and guests. We will update our review as soon as the property reopens. San Ysidro Ranch is one of the most exclusive, romantic luxury options in not just California, but the entire country. The grounds are stunningly beautiful, with mountain views, fresh air, and a secluded location in a well-heeled neighborhood. The cottage-style units are individually furnished with stone fireplaces and pour-poster canopy beds; some have private outdoor whirlpool tubs. A chic swimming pool and charming Californian cuisine restaurant set in a flowering garden have attracted everyone from JFK and Jackie to Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin. Some guests argue the experience doesn't justify the high price tags, but for honeymooners or couples, it's undeniably a first-class option.

Hotel Santa Barbara
533 State St, corner of State and Cota Streets

The 75-room Hotel Santa Barbara is a historic mid-range property centrally located right on Santa Barbara's famous State Street, known as a popular destination for shopping, dining, and nightlife. Charming historic details are met with modern comforts, and tasteful, if small, soft-hued rooms feature an array of conveniences including Keurig machines, mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Property features are limited, but a free continental breakfast is offered and there’s a Starbucks on-site, and business travelers are catered to with two meeting rooms and laptops available for loan. Although the State Street location is convenient, guests might also want to consider the often similarly priced Hotel Milo, which faces the ocean and has two pools and a fitness center.

Santa Barbara Inn
901 E Cabrillo Blvd

The four-pearl Santa Barbara Inn is an impressive boutique hotel that reopened in mid-2016 after a complete overhaul. It’s located across the street from East Beach and within a short drive of downtown Santa Barbara. Highlights include an upscale Italian restaurant with ocean views, heated outdoor pool, fitness center, concierge, and free Wi-Fi and breakfast. Its 69 guest rooms are spacious and stylish, with separate whirlpool tubs and walk-in showers in marble bathrooms that have heated floors. Rates are on the high side, but not outrageous for the area. Those looking for a stylish stay that's in the heart of downtown can consider Canary, a Kimpton Hotel.

West Beach Inn, a Coast Hotel
306 W Cabrillo Blvd

The three-pearl West Beach Inn is about as close as you can get to the harbor and the beach in Santa Barbara, and rates here are at a premium as a result. Its 46 contemporary guest rooms have work tables, and some upgraded rooms have private balconies with harbor views. They'll all well-equipped, with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, robes, and free Wi-Fi, though decor overall is a touch dated. Also, there's a slight lack of privacy due to the motel-style exterior entries, but the grounds are pleasant and sheltered from the busy street. Highlights include an outdoor pool and hot tub, and freebies like continental breakfast and bike rentals, but there's no full-service restaurant. Rates tend to be cheaper down the street at Hotel Milo Santa Barbara, which has more guest rooms and adds a fitness center.

Mason Beach Inn
324 W Mason St

Located on a tree-lined street in a quiet residential area that's just a five-minute walk from the beach, Mason Beach Inn is a mid-range family-owned property. The 45 guest rooms and three suites are housed in Spanish-style villas, and though guest rooms were renovated in 2015, the decor is drab. Rates include continental breakfast. The heated outdoor swimming pool is reasonably sized, and there’s an adjacent hot tub. Overall, guests are here for the low rates, free parking, and walkable location. But it may be worth checking out Lemon Tree Inn, which offers both a restaurant and bar at slightly lower rates.

Cabrillo Inn at the Beach
931 E Cabrillo Blvd

Location is the biggest selling point of the lower-middle-range Cabrillo Inn at the Beach. This classic 1940s, motor court-style property is just across the street from a gorgeous stretch of Santa Barbara beach. The outdoor pool and sundeck have great ocean views, and free parking, Wi-Fi, and breakfast adds to the property's value. The 43 rooms are tired and lack air-conditioning, but are generally clean and spacious enough for comfort; many have ocean views. Some guests find the Cabrillo's retro vibe charming, but others feel it's just outdated. Nonetheless, rates are attractive in this expensive beach community, and the property can fill up. Guests might also consider the retro, mid-range Marina Beach Motel, where rooms were updated in 2015, but rates are moderately higher.

Holiday Inn Express Santa Barbara
17 W Haley St

The mid-range Holiday Inn Express Santa Barbara occupies a prime downtown spot that’s been a hotel since 1916. Less than a block from bustling State Street, the hotel is a good base for leisure and business travelers alike. The lobby and terrace have colorful tilework and terra-cotta floors, and the property's 61 guest rooms are a bit small, but they're comfortable and have contemporary decor. All come equipped with flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffeemakers and mini-fridges, but they lack safes and microwaves. Freebies here include a hot breakfast, loaner bicycles, Wi-Fi throughout, and passes to a nearby pool and gym. Travelers looking for a more upscale stay with an equally convenient location can check rates at Canary, a Kimpton Hotel.

Marina Beach Motel
21 Bath St

The Marina Beach Motel is a mid-range hotel with a convenient location and affordable, modern rooms that tend to fill up fast. The hotel's location near both the park and the beach puts it within quick walking distance of many downtown attractions and dining options. The rooms are small, but were updated in 2015 with amenities such as rainfall showerheads. There are no facilities or public spaces here other than a pleasant outdoor courtyard, but bicycles are free to borrow and a simple continental breakfast is provided in the lobby. The Best Western Beachside Inn has noticeably higher rates, but also a small pool and views of the harbor.

The Eagle Inn
232 Natoma Ave

Three-pearl Eagle Inn is a family-run bed-and-breakfast located in a central Santa Barbara residential neighborhood that's close to the waterfront. Decor inside the Spanish Colonial home is modern, but stays true to the architectural style. Its 21 guest rooms -- which include eight free-standing casitas -- are appealingly airy, with fresh earth tones and cozy, rustic details. All are outfitted with AC, microwaves, mini-fridges, Keurig coffeemakers, and larger units add private balconies or patios, gas fireplaces, and some have whirlpool tubs. Amenities are limited, but freebies include a breakfast spread with specials like huevos rancheros, coffee and iced tea all day, and freshly baked cookies every afternoon. For a historic property that's closer to State Street, check out Hotel Santa Barbara.

Castillo Inn at the Beach
22 Castillo St

While not directly on the beach, this budget-friendly, motel-style property is located about a block away from the marina at Santa Barbara Harbor. It’s close to Stearns Warf, a popular tourist attraction with lots of shopping and dining options. There are few on-site features, but guests can park for free right in front of their rooms, which were renovated in 2013. The Mediterranean-inspired architecture and decor is more attractive than some may expect from a motel.
