Hotel Iris
625 Hotel Circle South

The budget Hotel Iris offers comfortable and affordable accommodations in a convenient location. It’s centrally located just off the Mission Valley Freeway in Mission Valley’s "Hotel Circle," a short drive from Old Town, SeaWorld, and San Diego Zoo. The airport and downtown also are within 15 minutes by car. This is an older, no-frills motel with exterior corridors and no elevator, but it’s been well maintained and updated. Freebies include coffee, parking, and Wi-Fi. It also has a pool, whirlpool, and laundry room, but no breakfast, fitness center, or business center. Rooms are clean and comfortably sized, with a contemporary decor that borders on funky. Mini-fridges, microwaves, and coffeemakers are standard. Rates are attractive and comparable with the nearby Days Hotel-Hotel Circle by SeaWorld that has clean rooms and a restaurant.

The Pearl Hotel
1410 Rosecrans St

Don’t let the motel-style, unassuming exterior fool you. The 23-room Pearl Hotel is a hip, fun boutique with quite a bit of character. Cool touches, such as free poolside movie nights; a fun, chill vibe; and free loaner bikes set this property apart. Rooms are contemporary and stylish, with vintage-inspired furnishings and platform beds, iPod docks, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. There’s a great restaurant serving California cuisine, and on-site parking with electric car charging stations -- but the highlight here is the pool, complete with lounge music and open cabanas. Just note that Gem Rooms are tiny, and that it is a 10-minute drive from the city center.
