Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites San Antonio-Downtown Market Area

As at many budget-friendly options, staying The Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites San Antonio - Downtown Market Area means a tradeoff between price and location. It’s a bit far from the action and you’ll need a car to see the sights from here. There's nothing much nearby except a biker bar and a Pizza Hut. But the rooms are spacious (though dark), suites are available, and basics like an outdoor pool and fitness center are covered. It's an okay choice if you are all right with driving everywhere -- even to grab dinner.

Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham San Antonio by SeaWorld

For families on a budget who just want to be within easy driving distance of SeaWorld or Lackland Air Force Base, this 83-room two-pearl hotel is one of the better deals in the rather remote area. Brown-and-beige rooms are lackluster, though outfitted with flat-screen TVs, safes, and coffeemakers. Guests can request microwaves and mini-fridges. It’s mostly families who stay at this non-smoking hotel and there are amenities that appeal to them, including a small playground for kids, an outdoor swimming pool with adjacent whirlpool, and the option of adjoining rooms. Some perks include a free continental breakfast, free Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, and a small business center. Free parking is a necessity, as there's nothing within walking distance. Travelers may prefer the Homewood Suites by Hilton Lackland AFB/SeaWorld, which offers a few more features.

JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa
23808 Resort Parkway

The largest property in the JW Marriott family, this 1,002-room behemoth is an upscale convention resort in the San Antonio hill country. As to be expected for a hotel of this clout and size, there are leisure and business features aplenty: the grounds have several pools (including a water park) and two 18-hole golf courses, plus there are seven restaurants and bars, a spa with wet areas and 32 treatment rooms, and two fitness centers. Rooms start at a spacious 450 square feet, and all have coffeemakers, mini-fridges, marble bathrooms, and robes. One downside is the mandatory resort fee, which can be compounded by additional fees (the spa and its fitness center incur an entrance fee). Couples looking for a hill country resort less overtaken by kids and conventioneers might prefer La Cantera Resort & Spa.

Emily Morgan Hotel - A DoubleTree by Hilton
705 East Houston Street Alamo Plaza

Located across from the famous Alamo and boasting a rich history (as well as, potentially, a few ghosts), the Emily Morgan Hotel is an excellent upscale property in downtown San Antonio. Its well-preserved 1920s building is a Gothic-Revival-meets-Texas style, with interiors that benefitted from a 2013 renovation when it was bought by Hilton. The 177 modern rooms have flat-screen TVs, tubs, robes, and iHome docking stations. An outdoor pool, free Wi-Fi, American restaurant and bar, and 24-hour gym complete the offerings, plus the property is close to many San Antonio attractions. For a location right on the River Walk, however, guests might look to the historic Omni La Mansion del Rio, which features hacienda flair, a lively pool area, and kid-friendly perks.

Hilton San Antonio Hill Country
9800 Westover Hills Blvd

The 226-room Hilton San Antonio Hill Country is an upscale property a 10-minute drive from SeaWorld. The hotel is packed with classic Hilton style -- which is to say everything is pleasant and upmarket, if unremarkable -- from the limestone waterfalls in the outdoor pools to the pricey on-site dining. Rooms are pleasant, and all are done with modern wood furniture and handsome cool tones. While they include coffeemakers and flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi is only free for HHonors members. Family-friendly amenities include a kiddy pool and an outdoor fire pit for roasting marshmallows. For something in the downtown area, travelers might want to check out the Hyatt Regency San Antonio, though rates are more expensive.

Holiday Inn Express & Suites San Antonio Medical Center North
11010 W Interstate 10

The two-and-a-half-pearl Holiday Inn Express & Suites San Antonio Medical Center North lives up to the standards of its parent company, with a convenient location off the highway and inexpensive, clean rooms. The design throughout is modern, thanks to renovations in 2015. The 122 simply decorated rooms have microwaves, coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges. Free Wi-Fi and free breakfast with hot items add value, as does an outdoor pool and small gym. There are some chain restaurants and stores in the immediate area, plus the Medical Center, USAA headquarters, and The University of Texas at San Antonio are all within a 10-minute drive. Tourists sights like the River Walk and Alamo are roughly a 25-minute drive. Travelers wanting to be nearer these tourist attractions should consider the Hampton Inn downtown.

Comfort Suites Alamo/Riverwalk

The two-and-a-half pearl Comfort Suites Alamo/Riverwalk is a good budget option for families and couples with cars who don't mind driving to nearby attractions. The Riverwalk may be only three blocks, but it takes about eight minutes of walking through a gritty neighborhood to get to the far end, opposite of where the prettiest parts are located. There's a shuttle to the River Walk, but no return service. Free Wi-Fi, a free hot breakfast, and outdoor swimming pool are great perks for this price point, but expect to pay for parking. Management offers a midweek wine and cheese reception. There's a fitness center and small putting green. Rooms are nicely sized and include small kitchenettes and bathtub/shower combinations.

Crockett Hotel

The mid-range Crockett Hotel has been a downtown San Antonio landmark since it opened next to the Alamo back in 1909. Its location makes it a great base for exploring the famous River Walk and its many dining and nightlife options. The 138 rooms are clean and comfortable, but can vary greatly in size -- some are plain tiny. Highlights include an excellent free hot breakfast, a popular bar, a outdoor pool, and an impressive brick atrium. Guests also get free access to amenities at the upper-middle-range  sister property across the street (The Menger Hotel), which has a larger pool, a fitness center, and a spa. However, as rates are comparable at The Menger, travelers may prefer just staying there instead.

Holiday Inn San Antonio Riverwalk

The 313-room, mid-range Holiday Inn Riverwalk sits in a central location that makes the River Walk area’s numerous attractions easily accessible on foot; the back of the property leads directly onto the River Walk itself, and the restaurant and some rooms have impressive views. Bright and contemporary decor gives a pleasant feel to the hotel, and rooms are large and airy. That said, Standard Rooms lack balconies, and only Suites have in-room safes. The outdoor heated pool is small but attractive, and there's also a hot tub. The hotel has a pleasant business center and meeting room as well, and free Wi-Fi access is available throughout. Breakfast at the hotel’s chic restaurant is included in some but not all room rates. Travelers could compare rates with the Crockett Hotel, where the outdoor pool has an attractive rock garden.

Hotel Indigo San Antonio Riverwalk

The mid-range Hotel Indigo San Antonio Riverwalk provides a useful location right on the San Antonio River in walking distance to the heart of the River Walk promenade. Its 149 rooms are spacious and comfortable with kitchenettes, Keurig coffeemakers, and stylish bathrooms, though guests have complained about thin walls and inconsistent housekeeping. The hotel also provides a small pool, a limited fitness center, and a business center. Breakfast (for a fee) and dinner are served in the on-site restaurant as well. But travelers could compare rates with the three-pearl Holiday Inn Riverwalk, which has a slightly more central location and includes breakfast in most rates.
