Sheraton Parco de' Medici Rome Hotel
Viale Salvatore Rebecchini, 145

With 50 meeting spaces and a 27-hole golf course, the Sheraton Parco de’ Medici Rome Hotel is an upscale property catering to business travelers and large groups. Given it's sprawling size at 817 rooms, the property offers a full sweep of on-site features including four restaurants, coffee shops, a piano bar, two outdoor pools, and a couple fitness centers. Rooms are divided among three buildings and vary in style, but most have pleasant decor, hardwood floors, and golf-course or pool views. However coffee/tea facilities aren’t provided in rooms, and there’s a fee for in-room Wi-Fi. The hotel's location, a short drive to Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, is helpful for jet-setting guests, but not convenient for sightseers. Travelers looking to tour the city may prefer Hotel Britannia, a charming upscale property in a convenient location near the Piazza della Repubblica.

Parco dei Principi Grand Hotel & SPA

The Parco Dei Principi Grand Hotel & Spa is located in the Parioli district near the beautiful Villa Borghese park (but far from most tourist sights). The grand, opulent lobby has plush seating, chandeliers, and lovely artwork. Rooms are traditional in style with crisp white bedding and updated amenities. Marble bathrooms are finished with crown molding and jetted shower/tub combos. Many rooms also include a private terrace with great views of the Villa Borghese park. Hotel features include an outdoor courtyard garden with big heated pool and the Prince Spa, complete with indoor pool and steam room. There are many restaurants and cafes within a 10-minute walk, but the on-site restaurant and Bar La Pomme are also convenient dining and drink choices.

Hotel Golden

The Hotel Golden is a budget hotel in a well-off neighborhood near high-end Via Veneto, where many of Rome’s five-pearl properties and the U.S. Embassy are found. The family-run hotel capitalizes on being cheap and cheerful in an otherwise reserved and upscale residential area. Housed in a former apartment building, the 18 rooms are elegant and clean, with a slightly dated vibe thanks to heavy wood paneling and patterned bedspreads. The siblings of the family take turns at the front desk while the matriarch makes the daily free breakfast. The hotel has the lowest priced rooms in the area by a long shot and offers limited amenities to keep the price down. Those looking for a budget hotel with more common space may want to consider the similarly priced Adriatic Hotel near the Vatican which has a large rooftop terrace.

Welcome Piram Hotel

The 112-room Welcome Piram Hotel is a centrally located pick with a drab exterior and recreated world of 18th-century extravagance within. From gilded rococo-style furnishings to a sea of fine marble, the lobby and common spaces are grand and palatial. Rooms are more subdued in decor, though bathrooms are finished in marble. There is a full-service spa, restaurant serving Roman-style cooking, and cocktail bar with live music. A rooftop garden has views over Rome and loungers for sunbathing. A less-fussy pick is the Augusta Lucilla Palace nearby.

Dharma Luxury Hotel

Spread out over two floors of a 19th-century office building off the Via Nazionale, the 17-room Hotel Dharma displays boutique style and service at prices that are low for this neighborhood. Its soundproof rooms, ranging from Doubles and Triples to Select Suites with hot tubs, balconies, and Turkish baths, all come with air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs with international and premium channels, and minibars. Breakfast, taken at the hotel's Cotto Restaurant next door, is included in the room rate. Hotel Nord Nuova Roma, with a rooftop terrace offering city views, is a similarly priced property in the same busy area.

The H'All Tailor Suite
Via Giuseppe Pisanelli 23/25

With its bold style and Michelin-star dining, the H'All Tailor Suite has made a name for itself. While similar area hotels like Margutta 19 and Palazzo Dama feature classic interiors, the H'All Tailor Suite is edgier, with funky artwork contrasting historic architecture. The 14 rooms are best for couples, as many are compact, though spacious suites are also available. Expect espresso machines, Smart TVs, and welcome treats, plus bathrooms with colorful LED lighting. The look won't be for everyone, but it's fun and lighthearted. The star of the show here is All'Oro, the Michelin-star restaurant run by the hotel's owners. Breakfast, which is included in rates, is a flurry of small plates delivered based on guests preferences for sweet or savory dishes (or both). It's something special, for sure.

Gioberti Art Hotel
Via Gioberti 23

The 68-room Gioberti Art Hotel is a modern, upper-middle-range property set just a couple minutes' walk from Roma Termini train station. Although a bit of a walk to top sights -- 22 minutes to Trevi Fountain and about 30 to Villa Borghese -- nearby trains and ample restaurants are convenient. Attractive rooms are a decent size for Rome and include desks, minibars, ample wardrobe space, air-conditioning, and modern bathrooms with rainfall showers and hairdryers. Rooms are quiet. There's little else on-site, aside from a breakfast room with free continental spreads. Wi-Fi is also free. Travelers wanting to be closer to tourist attractions may prefer Hotel Scalinata Di Spagna, which has a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of the city.

Rome Glam Hotel
Via Nazionale 82

The three-and-a-half-pearl Rome Glam Hotel is a stylish and modern hotel located on the north side of the city center, so it's well-placed to reach many attractions (like the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps) within a 15-minute walk. The hotel has a fresh design thanks to a renovation completed in 2016. The 59 rooms are spacious (for Rome) and come with flat-screen TVs, kettles, air-conditioning, and free arrival minibars. Open-floor bathroom plans aren't popular with everyone. Most guests enjoy the free hot breakfast buffet, lounge bar, and chic rooftop terrace. The nearby Rome Times Hotel is a good alternative with meeting rooms, a small gym, and free appetizers during happy hour.

Roman Holidays

Many guests find Roman Holidays very difficult to find, and it's no wonder -- the rooms are housed in two separate buildings (a five-minute walk apart) which are basically apartment buildings. The front desk (check-in) is only open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and once guests are in the inn, they're pretty much left on their own. Roman Holidays is advertised as a B&B, but it feels like more of a pensione, with small, basic rooms and no common areas or amenities (even breakfast is served at an off-site local bakery). Coming back at night can feel more like going into someone's random apartment than a hotel (guests even have to turn on the hallway/stairway lights, since they're not left on all the time). It's a clean, solid option for budget travelers and for those who need a bed at night and little more. But guests looking for a true hotel or B&B shuould look elsewhere.

Hotel Santa Maria

Hidden away off a side street in the charming old neighborhood of Trastevere, this three-pearl property was once a monastery. About a five-minute walk to the Tiber River, the hotel is around the corner from the trendy restaurants and bars of Piazza Di Santa Maria. The 18 rustic guest rooms, with terra-cotta floors and exposed beams, are arranged around a delightful courtyard garden, which is surprisingly serene and quiet. The atmosphere here is more like a country home than a city hotel. While the location is perfect for exploring one of Rome’s most idiosyncratic neighborhoods, many of Rome's major tourist sights are not within walking distance. For a similar style hotel that's closer to the main sights, travelers might want to consider Hotel Fontana -- also a former monastery -- which has stunning views of the Trevi Fountain from the rooftop terrace.
