Augusto's Copacabana Hotel

Augusto's Copacabana is a lower-middle-range hotel with a convenient and central location near the beach and Cantagalo metro station. 102 rooms are clean and comfortable, though maintenance issues have been noted. Each comes with a 28-inch flat-screen TV and minibar; some rooms offer tiny French balconies. A hot breakfast buffet is served for free at the lobby level restaurant and bar. The rooftop swimming pool area, sun deck, and steam room are nice bonuses, but the equipment in the fitness center is dated and dirty. Expect to pay extra for Wi-Fi.

Promenade Princess Copacabana
58 Rua Xavier da Silveira Copacabana

The Promenade Princess Copacabana is a popular mid-range apartment hotel two blocks from the beach. It's located along a quiet side-street, two minutes walking distance from the Cantagalo metro station. The hotel offers 44 slightly worn Junior Suites that are spacious, clean, and nicely decorated with modern furniture. Each comes with a small kitchenette and balcony. There isn't an on-site restaurant or bar, but a free breakfast buffet is served every morning. Wi-Fi is free throughout, and a swimming pool, steam room, sauna, and a small gym are nice extras.

Windsor Martinique Hotel

The Windsor Martinique offers a convenient beach location just a short walk from the Posto 5 area at Copacabana Beach. This mid-range hotel gets high marks for its location, cleanliness of rooms, and helpful front desk staff. Standard and Superior rooms are comfortable (though Standard rooms are small) and include 21-inch flat-screen TVs, minibars, and safes. Free breakfast buffet and Wi-Fi keep overall costs low, while a tiny rooftop swimming pool, bar, full restaurant, and small fitness center are nice extras.

186 Lapa Central Hostel
Rua do Lavradio 186 Centro

Opened in 2012, this hip, simple hostel -- located in the heart of the lively Lapa district -- has become one of the most popular spots for budget travelers and backpackers. It is located in an old historical building that has character, high ceilings, and a nice courtyard. Room options include those with private or shared baths and they vary in size, but all have air-conditioning. Amenities are few, but the common areas are cozy and the room rate includes Wi-Fi. The hostel only accepts guests 18 and above.

Novotel Rio de Janeiro Leme
Rua Gustavo Sampaio 320

Golden Tulip Rio Leme is an upper-mid-range hotel with 275 rooms, located in a quiet and residential area not far from Copacabana's beach and tourism scene. Common areas and seven floors of rooms were renovated in 2014. Renovated rooms have a contemporary but understated ambience and feature minibars, safes, and flat-screen TVs, but lack balconies. Other hotel features include a restaurant with a free hot buffet breakfast and a (tiny) rooftop swimming pool with a poolside bar and phenomenal views of the ocean and Rio's famous Christ the Redeemer statue. Other perks include a steam room and fitness center with gorgeous views. Wi-Fi is free, but high-speed access costs extra, and while there's no parking on-site, there are several parking lots in the area.

Own Ipanema Visconti
Rua Prudente de Morais 1050 Ipanema

The 48-room Promenade Visconti is a two-and-a-half-pearl hotel that's only a block from Ipanema Beach. Guests can walk to the shore in a couple of minutes, and there are almost countless restaurants, shops, and bars nearby. Rooms are spacious and modern, although rather plain, and all include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and minibars. Balconies come standard too, but some are tiny. We also spotted some wear in bathrooms. Larger suites have kitchenettes with sinks and microwaves, and balconies are larger and furnished. Breakfast is free, but that's the only meal served on-site. The pool and fitness center are small and dated, but most guests are here for the beach action anyway. As an alternative, the nearby Ipanema Inn has similar rates and a restaurant that serves all meals.

Premier Copacabana Hotel

The 110-room Hotel Premier Copacabana is an upper-middle-range property in the Copacabana neighborhood of Rio De Janeiro, about a 10-minute walk from the beach. Renovated in 2014, the hotel feels modern and fresh, with a purple and black color scheme in the lobby, bouquets of fresh flowers, and a petite rooftop pool and patio with great views. The rooms are moderately sized and simply decorated, with minibars and flat-screen TVs. However, air-conditioners can be loud, and noise can carry from the street onto lower floors. It may be worth checking out the Casa Mosquito, a smaller property that's a bit further from the beach, though more peaceful.

Casa Cool Beans B&B

The 10-room Casa Cool Beans is a quaint, colorful bed and breakfast in the Santa Teresa district of Rio De Janeiro. The mid-range inn is unique and welcoming, with a lovely pool and plenty of open-air space for relaxing and enjoying the sunshine. Rooms are simple, but spacious and decorated with vibrant art by local artists. Wi-Fi and breakfast are free, and as guests must be 18 or older, the property tends to appeal to international couples and single travelers. Santa Teresa is an older, cobblestoned part of town, known for its art and history. It's a lovely place to explore, but it's not the safest place to walk around at night. Guests seeking a more centrally located property could try the Windsor Martinique Hotel.

Hotel Marina Palace Rio Leblon

The 150-room Hotel Marina Palace is a towering, beachside property in the Leblon neighborhood of Rio De Janeiro, a pricey residential area with restaurants and shops. The upscale hotel has beautiful views and a great location for those wanting beach time, but many of its rooms are a bit dated and run down for the price. The hotel is under steady renovation for much of 2015, with updates planned for all rooms and the -- already quite lovely -- rooftop pool, pool bar, and fitness center. Guests could also try comparing prices with Marina All Suites, which is also across the street from Ipanema-Leblon beach.

Windsor Astúrias Hotel
Rua Senador Dantas 14 Praça Mahatma Gandi

Two-and-a-half-pearl Windsor Asturias Hotel is a decent choice for travelers wanting to be in the heart of the city without a big price tag. There are shops, restaurants, and museums within walking distance, and the lively nightlife of Lapa is 10 minutes away on foot. The 166 rooms are basic and a bit dated, with minibars, free Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning. Executive Rooms add relaxing jetted tubs. The restaurant serves a free buffet breakfast, and a la carte options are available for both lunch and dinner. The gym is rather half-hearted, and the business center comes with a fee, but the rooftop pool has superb city views. Similar rates will score a more modern room at 55 Rio Hotel in the Lapa district, though it lacks a pool.
