Hotel Ideal
Via Matteotti, 104

The lower-middle-range Hotel Ideal is a modest, family-run property set on the main road that runs through the small lakeside town of Torbole. While not overlooking the water, it is a short enough stroll to Lake Garda's shores, as well as the town's handful of bars and restaurants. The 36 rooms and suites are modern and have basic amenities and mountain-view balconies -- some prone to a little traffic noise. Some rooms include free minibars. Besides guests in Suites having access to a hot tub on a terrace, there are no leisure facilities on-site, which is reflected in low rates. All rates include a decent buffet breakfast of hot and cold items, and an Italian eatery is available for other meals. Guest willing to pay a little more for lake views might want to consider the Hotel Lago di Garda.

Hotel Benaco
Via Benaco 35

Hotel Benaco is a mid-range property with simple, family-run charm, and a Torbole, Lake Garda location. It sports the '70s look typical of the region's hotels, although pretty views are lovely on a sun terrace with a whirlpool (fee), and seating here and by the harbor is pleasant. The 37 rooms aren't the most inspiring, but they're comfortably outfitted with flat-screen TVs, kettles, and clean bathrooms. Free breakfasts, a great pizzeria, bike storage, and business-centric features, as well as on-site parking round out available amenities. The Seele Garda Hotel offers a swimming pool, but it loses the downtown location.

Hotel Maribel
Via Pian Dei Frari 23, Loc. Campo Carlo Magno

The 24-room Hotel Maribel is a chalet-style property set in a clearing surrounded by woods. Its location in the Adamello Brenta Park is great for exploring the area's natural beauty and there's also easy access to skiing. The spa impresses, especially the fact that all the facilities are free -- in fact almost everything is free of charge. Lodge-inspired rooms are clean, comfortable, and include furnished balconies, but there's not much for kids on-site. Maso Maribel gets high marks for style and cuisine. Rates are on the high side, but there's plenty included to make it an astoundingly good value.

Cristal Palace Hotel
Via Cima Tosa 104/A

The 62-room Cristal Palace Hotel is an upscale chalet-style property close to the center of Madonna di Campiglio, a quaint skiing village. The amazing mountain setting is the star attraction here, and lends the hotel some serious storybook charm. The Cristal Palace is a solid choice for vacationing skiers, thanks to free shuttle service to the lifts, and an on-site spa. The kids' club accommodates families with young children, too. The hotel is well-priced, offering rates lower than most of the same caliber in the surrounding area. Travelers who would rather avoid a shuttle to the lifts altogether, however, should check out Hotel Casa del Campo, which offers ski-in/ski-out privileges at similar rates.
