Hotel Marincanto
Via Cristoforo Colombo 50

With beautiful sea views, the cliffside Hotel Marincanto scores plenty of points for ambiance. Rooms and suites have king beds and balconies, many with sea-facing views. Suites also have whirlpool hot tubs, but overall room decor is bland. On-site features include a restaurant serving an expansive (and free) buffet breakfast, as well as a small infinity pool with ocean views. There's a beach area as well, but it's only accessible via a long flight of stairs and it's technically not private.

B&B Mamma Rosa Positano
Via Tagliata 79

This tiny family-run bed-and-breakfast is nestled amid gardens, citrus groves, and vineyards high in the mountains above Positano, and a short walk from quaint Montepertuso and the Path of the Gods. Mamma Rosa only has two rooms, both with breathtaking sea views, simple yet elegant decor, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and private bathrooms in the hallway. There are 220 steps to climb from the road to the property, but most guests find that the views, the warm hosts, and the delicious homemade breakfast make it worth the effort.

Vittoria
Via Fornillo 19

The mid-range, 20-room Vittoria provides an excellent base for those looking to explore the Positano region or just tuck away for a relaxing holiday in a seaside Amalfi town. Undeniably romantic, thanks to its panoramic bay views from multiple terraces, the hotel is best suited to couples. Rooms are traditionally and simply decorated, and equipped with minibars, flat-screen TVs, and furnished outdoor spaces. The property is low on frills, but a free continental breakfast is included in all rates. Guests can also access (via numerous steps) the beach and excellent pizza restaurant it shares with sister property Hotel Pupetto. Those looking for a pool and a spa should check out Hotel Poseidon.

Hotel Posa Posa
Via Pasitea 165

The main draws of the upper-middle-range Hotel Posa Posa is its impressive outdoor spaces and lovely views of the ocean from its rooms and restaurant patio. While its 24 rooms are classic, they're not necessarily posh, and can be a disappointment for travelers expecting four-pearl accommodations, as advertised. Still, all come with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. A restaurant, a rooftop deck with a hydromassage pool and lounge chairs, and a breakfast buffet that's included in the rates round out the features. Most hotels here are similar to one another, but travelers could consider the Hotel Palazzo Murat as an alternative -- it throws in a free boat tour, too.

Casa Cuccaro B&B
Via Pizzillo/Nocelle, 2

Casa Cuccaro B&B is a small family-run property in Nocelle, a quiet hamlet on the terraced hillside offering sweeping views over Positano. This value property is a bit difficult to reach and potential guests should be comfortable climbing steep inclines on narrow staircases and ancient streets. These same attributes makes it popular with hikers, and dozens of trails throughout the Lattari Mountains start right here. Its five simple rooms have en-suite bathrooms and balconies with sea views that are rivaled only by the views from the lovely rooftop terrace. It's worth comparing with the nearby B&B Mamma Rosa Positano, which lacks the en-suite bathrooms, but offers homemade breakfast and dinner.

Albergo Punta Regina
Via Pasitea 224

The 18-room Albergo Punta Regina is an upscale, family-run hotel in Positano with breathtaking views of the sea and surrounding mountains from its guest room balconies, rooftop terrace, and infinity-edge swimming pool. The property is well-maintained: A renovation of the reception area was completed in 2015, and the Standard Rooms are scheduled for refurbishment in 2017. Interiors are charming and classically styled -- though some might find the antique-style furnishings a bit dated -- and rooms offer modern amenities like flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, plus some have indoor or outdoor hot tubs. There is no restaurant on-site, but the town center is just a five-minute walk away, while the beach can be reached in 10 minutes. Travelers might also want to check out the nearby Hotel Marincanto, which offers more amenities including a restaurant, gym, Turkish bath, and massage services.

Hotel Pupetto
Via Fornillo 37

Located right on a quiet pebble beach a 15-minute walk away from the main town of Positano, the three-pearl Hotel Pupetto is a great choice for vacationers looking to get away from it all. Traditionally decorated -- think patterned tile and wrought-iron headboards in the 34 rooms -- the furnishings are growing dated in a less-picturesque way, but they're comfortable. The on-site restaurant offers up a great free breakfast as well as stunning views, while colorful sun loungers on the beach await visitors (for a fee). For those with children, the kid-friendly, three-pearl Hotel Poseidon is closer to the center of town and still carries a romantic-getaway vibe.

Palazzo Margherita
Via Guglielmo Marconi 45

Completely renovated in 2014, this historic, 19th-century hotel is a well-decorated, three-pearl property with seven apartment-style units. Room are beautiful and equipped with kitchens, but the best part are the views from furnished terraces of the sea and colorful buildings of Positano. Unfortunately, there are no restaurant, pool, or wellness facilities on-site. Overall, it's a great base for exploring Positano and the Amalfi Coast, though the number of stairs, or, alternatively, long walks, involved might be challenging for those with mobility issues and without cars. Those who are looking to spend most of their time on the beach might find a waterfront property more convenient -- the Covo Dei Saraceni is along the beach and has more amenities.

Hotel Buca di Bacco
Via Rampa della Teglia 4

The Hotel Buca di Bacco is a historic, upscale property situated right along Positano's most popular beach and close to shops and restaurants. The property features classically elegant decor and Mediterranean accents that can occasionally feel dated, but are nonetheless tasteful and well-maintained. Its 47 guest rooms are individually decorated and come with flat-screen TVs and minibars, and many rooms offer exceptional sea views (some from private terraces or balconies). There's a popular on-site restaurant with beachfront alfresco dining, as well as a small bar and an outdoor terrace. But there's no pool, so travelers seeking a hotel with that feature might want to check out the nearby Covo Dei Saraceni

Casa Albertina
Via della Tavolozza 3

The 20-room Casa Albertina goes beyond its three-pearl rating with perks such as turn-down service, bathrobes, and family owners, which gives the property a bed-and-breakfast vibe. Its location high up on the hillside above the bay means lots of stairs, but for those who are able and don't mind, the views from the balconies and terraces are glorious. Rooms are quaint and dated -- think lots of dusty-rose linens and pleated chairs -- but that's typical of the area and arguably part of the charm. Plenty of restaurants and shops are within walking distance, and the beach is a 10-minute walk (and lots of steps) away. For a historic hotel with a bit more on offer, plus far fewer stairs and a pool, visitors might look to the Hotel Palazzo Murat
