Allegroitalia Pisa Tower Plaza
Via Caduti del Lavoro 46

Allegroitalia Pisa Tower Plaza is one of the few upscale hotels in Pisa, but it's located in a residential neighborhood about a 20-minute walk from the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The 121 modern and spacious rooms and suites are above and beyond what you'll usually find in this ancient city, since the hotel was built in 2013 on a huge piece of property. There's enough space for all the features you won't find elsewhere: a (seasonal) outdoor pool, rooftop terrace, fine-dining restaurant and bar, fitness center, large parking lot, and meeting rooms. Still, there are some unwelcome quirks like excessively dark hallways and an expensive so-so breakfast buffet. For something closer to the tower and walkable to restaurants, check rates at Hotel Pisa Tower

NH Pisa
Piazza della Stazione 2

Part of the practical NH chain, the upper-middle-range NH Pisa has a sleek modern lobby, but little in the way of features. The location, however, is excellent -- it's right across from Pisa's main train station and walking distance to shops, restaurants, and bars in Pisa, and a 25-minute walk from the Leaning Tower. Its 100 rooms are compact but comfortable (if a bit bland) with minibars, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Renovated Superior Rooms get an upgrade all around with more stylish decor and extras like coffee/tea service and rainfall showers. There's no full-service restaurant or bar and no wellness facilities, but a small self-service snack station, a daily breakfast buffet (for an extra fee), and meeting rooms provide a few helpful extras. Travelers on the market for more regional flair might consider the Bologna Hotel Pisa, though it's farther from the train.

Hotel La Pace
Galleria Antonio Gramsci B 14

Hotel La Pace is a kitschy budget option with one of the best locations in Pisa for access to the Central Station, chain stores, and Keith Haring murals. Low rates and a one-minute walk to the train are the main reasons guests briefly stay here, as many of the 63 guest rooms look straight out of the '60s. To be fair, the hotel is straightforward that their most economical rooms are out-of-date, all of the rooms are spotlessly clean, and upgrading brings more modern decor and renovated bathrooms. The breakfast buffet (costs extra) is substantial and includes both hot and cold European and American items. Wi-Fi is free. For something closer to the Leaning Tower of Pisa (and away from the train station) check rates at the Hotel Pisa Tower

B&B Hotel Pisa
Via Scornigiana 1

B&B Hotel Pisa is a chain budget spot popular with tour groups and tourists who want fast access to the nearby Pisa International Airport and Central Station. The 101 simple rooms are clean and come with flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and spacious bathrooms. Features are minimal -- there's a hot breakfast buffet, free Wi-Fi, free parking, and a small shop that sells cold drinks and snacks. The immediate location is mostly industrial, and it's about a 15-minute drive to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. For something sleeker near the train station, NH Pisa Hotel is a good bet.

Bologna Hotel Pisa
Via Giuseppe Mazzini 57

Easily accessible from the airport and train station, the Bologna Hotel Pisa has one of the most central locations in Pisa. The 64-room upper-mid-range hotel is within easy walking distance of many great restaurants, and about 15 minutes from the Leaning Tower. With an ample buffet breakfast, garden terrace, free Wi-Fi, and small meeting room, the hotel is a great value for couples, as well as small groups eager to explore the city. It's also convenient for those who need to get from place to place quickly via train or air. There are no amenities geared toward children so families should check out the nearby Hotel NH Cavalieri, which offers childcare services and free stays for children under the age of 11.

Hotel Repubblica Marinara
Via Carlo Matteucci, Angolo Via Romboli

Hotel Repubblica Marinara is a beautifully maintained three-pearl option with some of the most nicely decorated rooms in Pisa. Unfortunately, the out-of-the-way location is about a 15-minute drive from the Leaning Tower of Pisa, making it less than ideal for tourists who want to explore on foot. The 54 rooms are spread over two floors and each unit is painstakingly decorated to include bold paint, original art, and creature comforts like flat-screen TVs and kettles. Downstairs, the Italian restaurant is open for all three meals and features an express lunch option that's popular with business travelers. Remaining features include free Wi-Fi, free garage parking, and a full bar with a huge wine collection. For a hotel that's at the doorstep to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, check rates at Hotel Pisa Tower -- but expect higher prices.

Grand Hotel Bonanno
Via Carlo Francesco Gabba 17

Grand Hotel Bonanno is a perfectly pleasant three-pearl option in a quiet neighborhood that's about a 10-minute walk to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The 89 rooms are simply decorated and come with a flat-screen TV, mini-fridge, and electric blinds. Unfortunately, thin walls do little to keep out bathroom noise from the neighbors. The free breakfast buffet is one of the best in Pisa, the spread includes hot and cold Italian and American items. At night, the space is transformed into an elegant Italian restaurant. The adjacent bar is staffed with a bartender, an unexpected perk. Free Wi-Fi, free parking, and bike rentals round out the features. For something a bit more upscale and with a seasonal pool, check rates at the Allegroitalia Pisa Tower.

Hotel Pisa Tower
Via Andrea Pisano 23

The mid-range Hotel Pisa Tower should be renamed Hotels Pisa Tower, as it actually consists of two buildings down the road from one another. The main hotel is 150 meters from the entrance to the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the annex building is a few blocks down the street. Rooms in each hotel are classically decorated and impeccably clean -- the largest room sleeps four people comfortably. Free continental breakfast features freshly baked pastries and strong Italian espresso. Along with the walkable location, the hotels offer bike rentals, airport transfers, free parking, and free Wi-Fi. Hotel San Ranieri
Via Filippo Mazzei, 2, Cisanello

Given its proximity to the airport and to Cisanello Hospital, as well as its modern flare and ample meeting facilities, its not surprising that the upper-mid-range San Ranieri is most popular among business travelers. It also serves as a decent base for tourists who don’t mind staying about 10-minutes by taxi from central Pisa and who appreciate the ultra-contemporary furnishings and architecture. Rooms here are modern to the point of seeming futuristic, and have cool features such as televisions embedded in the mirrors. Unfortunately, the Wi-Fi falls short of what one would expect from such a modern spot, and there's no spa or pool.
