The Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra is one of Cambodia's most luxurious hotels, a prominent 201-room high-rise that overlooks all of Phnom Penh and from its upper floors, the Mekong River. Rooms here are spacious with colonial-style decor, flat-screen TVs and DVD players, and bathrooms with both showers and separate tubs. The hotel has a wide array of ethnic cuisine restaurants, several bars, an in-house fitness center, a mammoth swimming pool, and access to an adjoining membership sports complex with a fitness center, swimming pool, and tennis courts. Additionally, the hotel has a Club Lounge, excellent business facilities, and is right next to the new AEON shopping mall, Phnom Penh's biggest. While it is slightly out of the historic central area, the hotel is a great luxury choice for its views and five-pearl facilities. In this price range, only Raffles Hotel Le Royal compares.

The hotel has a lovely outdoor swimming pool surrounded by sala beds, and is serious about being a serene escape -- it has a sleepy patio restaurant under trees and a no-children policy. Families could consider The Kabiki, which has a kiddy pool and rooms with bunk beds, though is moderately more expensive.

PAVILION
19 227, Street, Khan Daun Penh

The Pavilion is a small adults-only boutique hotel located in the historic center of Phnom Penh near Wat Botum. There are only 36 charming rooms featuring four-poster beds, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. The lobby building is a 1920s French Khmer building built by the King Sihanouk's mother, but the three-pearl hotel's centerpiece is its lovely garden swimming pool surrounded by cabanas and a small restaurant where free continental breakfast is served. The hotel also has a tiny fitness center and spa with free 25 minute massage treatments for guests. The Plantation, with two swimming pools, is another solid boutique option in the neighborhood, though prices may be higher.

Sunway Hotel Phnom Penh
1 Street 92, Sangkat Wat Phnom

The Sunway Hotel Phnom Penh is a business-oriented hotel with 138 rooms, located right next to Wat Phnom and across from the U.S. Embassy. Rooms are well kept, if a bit bland and dated, and feature flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. While this upper-middle-range hotel doesn't have a swimming pool, it does have a large fitness center with steam room, sauna, and hot tub, plus a small spa, as well as excellent meeting and conference facilities. There is one restaurant that serves a free breakfast buffet plus a bar. For this price, travelers who want something a bit more trendy should try the La Maison d'Ambre.

Villa Langka
No 14, Street 282

The boutique-style, air-conditioned rooms have charming local accents and come with flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and free breakfast, and half of the rooms are housed in a traditional Khmer villa. The hotel's activity centers on the pool and the adjoining restaurant, which serves a mix of fine Khmer dishes and international fare. Guests might want to compare rates at the Pavilion, which has a spa and gym, and the Blue Lime, although these boutique properties are adult only -- Villa Langka welcomes children.

La Maison d'Ambre
123, street 110, Preah Ang Duong, corner Street 19

La Maison d'Ambre is an upscale boutique hotel located in the heart of a popular tourist area, and is convenient to restaurants, bars, shops, and sightseeing. All 10 rooms are individually designed around specific geographic themes -- from Japan to Morocco to Paris to New York -- and are large, with separate living areas and full kitchens. Guests have access to a huge DVD library, and the rooftop restaurant and bar, serving fine French and Khmer cuisine, is a standout feature, with colorful daybeds, cushions, and swing chairs. But there are few on-site features apart from that. (No gym or spa.) Travelers could also check out other nearby boutique properties, such as The Plantation or The Pavilion, which are larger and offer more amenities like fitness centers.

The Kabiki
264 22 Street

The Kabiki is a small, green boutique hotel hidden behind a large tropical garden and tucked away in a gated security lane. Tuk tuks and taxis can't access the street, as there's a government compound here, so guests must carry luggage 100 feet down the road, but it's quiet and safe. Its 18 rooms are set around spacious gardens, and have flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi and breakfast. The hotel has a pretty, green-colored swimming pool and children's pool set out in the garden, with an adjacent restaurant/bar serving all meals and cocktails. It's so quiet and calm here that many guests spend entire days relaxing in the garden. As the rooms are far more spacious than at sister property, The Pavilion, they are of better value, not to mention that while many boutique lodgings in Phnom Penh don't allow children, the Kabiki has family rooms with bunk beds, making it an excellent choice for travelers with kids.

Raffles Hotel Le Royal
92 Rukhak Vithei Daun Penh, Sangkat Wat Phnom

The 175-room Raffles Hotel Le Royal is one of Phnom Penh's classic gems. This historic luxury hotel opened its doors in 1929, and has hosted writers, dignitaries, and royals throughout the years. Rooms have a refined colonial style plus free Wi-Fi and large flat-screen TVs. There are also resort-ready features like two garden swimming pools, a fitness center, a small spa, and haute Khmer and French cuisine in Le Royal. The atmospheric Elephant Bar is one of Phnom Penh's most classic and appealing cocktail lounges, though the hotel itself is a bit far from the trendier neighborhoods like BKK-1. Raffles is one of Phnom Penh's most expensive stays, and travelers looking for luxury at a slightly lower price tag should consider Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra.

the 252
Street 252 #19, Daun Penh

The 252 is a mid-range boutique hotel with 19 rooms, located off of two of Phnom Penh's main drags and just outside of the trendy BKK1 neighborhood. Rooms here are fairly basic, either furnished in minimalist concrete or wood decor with contemporary Khmer touches. The hotel has a swimming pool that takes up most of its grounds, with sala cabanas on one side of the pool, and a small restaurant and bar on the other side. It's a comfy little spot, but properties like Blue Lime, close to the National Museum, offer more value for the dollar.

Plantation - urban resort & spa
184 28, Street

The Plantation is a mid-range boutique hotel with 70 rooms clustered in several wings, hidden away from the street by artwork, lovely gardens, and two nice pools. Occupying a restored 1930s French building, the resort sits in the historical center of Phnom Penh, about a 10-minute walk from the riverside and close to plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops. Rooms are contemporary and colorful with open floor plans and four-poster beds, along with free Wi-Fi and breakfast. There are an upscale French restaurant overlooking the courtyard and a poolside bar/restaurant serving all meals. The resort also has a fitness center and spa. While it's a bit large to be an intimate boutique hotel, The Plantation is still one of the better escape-retreats located in the heart of the city. Guests may also want to consider The Kabiki, a less expensive boutique hotel with just 18 rooms and a very quiet vibe.
