Hotel Amic Horizonte
Calle Vista Alegre 1, La Bonanova

The mid-range, 199-room Hotel Amic Horizonte is located on a hillside on the outskirts of Palma. While the hotel itself is average in most ways, it's the spectacular panoramic views that steal the show. Room quality varies wildly between drab and dated to some genuinely impressive suites with luxury features such as rooftop whirlpool tubs. The pool is a good size too, especially for a city-based hotel, though it's hardly within walking distance of much of interest. Overall guests will have very differing experiences depending on their room choice; more consistency can be found at the nearby Catalonia Majorica Hotel, which also has pretty good sea views, though not all rooms have balconies.

HM Jaime III
Paseo Mallorca 14B

This upper-middle-range boutique hotel urban refuge is stylish, colorful, and bursting with hand-selected art. Its 64 guest rooms are minimalist and modern; some have balconies. The fitness center and spa area is small but serene. The restaurant has street-side terrace seating and serves seasonal cuisine, both buffet-style (for breakfast) and a la carte; there's also a cocktail bar. This character-filled hotel has a central base in Palma within walking distance of a bus stop and department store shopping.Trip Advisor says 88 rooms, but hotel website says 64.

BQ Belvedere Hotel
Mitja lluna 4

BQ Belvedere Hotel is a three-pearl, resort-style property located in a distinctly unresort-y and largely residential neighborhood, about a 15-minute drive outside the capital, Palma. Regular buses shuttle guests to Palmanova beach, while the smaller Cala Mayor is about within walking distance. While decor and amenities in the 414 guest rooms are underwhelming, bay views from some higher floors are genuinely superb. The hotel features extensive gardens with a huge swimming pool, several refreshment options, and swathes of lawns scattered with loungers. Kids are also well catered for, and an optional all-inclusive plan appeals to families. All in all it's a good value holiday hotel with enough to keep most guests happy, at least those who aren't bothered about buzzy atmosphere. Another nearby option is the Blue Bay Hotel, which is cheaper with all-inclusive as standard, though with fewer facilities.

Hotel Palma Bellver Managed By Melia
Paseo Maritimo 11

The Tryp Palma Bellver is a popular upscale hotel and local landmark with an enviable setting overlooking the marina and close to the city center. It features sea views from most of its 384 rooms, and those on the upper levels have some of the most impressive panoramas found in Palma. The pool is not huge, but big enough and one of the better hotel pools in the area, though expect some crowding in peak season. Overall, the hotel combines a great location with decent rooms and good facilities, though you might find better value at the nearby Hotel Costa Azul.

Melia Palma Marina
Avinguda de Gabriel Roca, 29

The 361-room, upper-middle-range Melia Palas Atenea is one of a few '70s-built landmark hotels that line the busy road that runs along Palma's marina front. While the setting is impressive with plenty of local dining, it's not the best positioned for strolls into the city center. Guest rooms are all modernized (besides some bathrooms) and open to balconies with, more often than not, sea views. While the outdoor pool is pleasant, the spa really stands out with excellent facilities that include a heated indoor pool and huge whirlpool tub -- though there's an entrance fee. The neighboring Tryp Palma Bellver is a bit more polished and similarly priced, though it lacks a spa.

UR Palacio Avenida
Calle del Marques de la Fontsanta 2

The three-pearl UR Palacio Avenida is an adult-only, boutique hotel set on a busy road on the edge of Palma's center. It's location is the main drawcard, as it's just steps from train and bus stations, and a short stroll from the city's numerous dining and shopping opportunities. Interestingly, the hotel was used as a cinema in the 1940s and some original features still remain. While lower-level rooms are prone to traffic noise, higher floors feature some great city and mountain views, especially from the apartment-like penthouse suite. Facilities are quite limited, with little beyond a small, stylish restaurant which stays open throughout the day. Its nearby sister hotel -- UR Mision de San Miguel -- has a pleasant courtyard and cocktail bar for lingering.

Sheraton Mallorca Arabella Golf Hotel
Carrer de la Vinagrella, Urbanization Son Vida

The 93-room Sheraton Mallorca Arabella Golf Hotel is an upscale property set in the picturesque hills of Son Vida, just outside Palma. Rooms feel genuinely high-end, if a little generic, and many open to balconies with superb panoramic views. The property offers excellent golfing opportunities, and families with small children are particularly well catered for, thanks to multiple swimming pools, sports facilities, and supervised activities. On-site dining is decent, though there's nowhere else within walking distance and no nightlife. An elegant spa and free, quality breakfast buffet tops off an all-around impressive property. Though for a little more character -- and a touch of glamor -- try the 13th-century Castillo Hotel Son Vida nearby.

Hotel Cort
Plaza Cort 11

Hotel Cort is a landmark luxury boutique hotel with impeccably stylish interiors and an enviable setting in the picturesque center of Palma's Old Town. All 16 of its rooms and suites expertly balance chic and cozy, and the posh bathrooms provide Egyptian cotton towels and Molten Brown products. The top suite also features a rooftop terrace with a whirlpool tub and stunning 360-degree views. There's a real emphasis on dining, starting with an excellent a la carte breakfast (included) and continuing with refined (if expensive) lunch and dinner menus -- all of which can be enjoyed on its lovely, buzzy alfresco terrace. However, unlike its direct competition -- the Boutique Hotel Calatrava -- there are no spa facilities. Hotel Tres has a larger rooftop pool with city-view panoramas.

Boutique Hotel Can Cera
Calle San Francisco de Sales 8

The Hotel Can Cera provides peace, privacy, and luxury, in a unique 700-year-old setting. Between the hotel's beautifully preserved traditional Mallorcan patio, its spa with a hot tub, library, and the on-site Gastro Pub that serves up quality Spanish tapas, there is just as much to do inside the Can Cera, as there is in the historic center of Palma where it is located. Rooms are stately and private. Two-poster beds look elegant and bathrooms are spacious. The only main drawback is that the hotel is about a 15-minute walk from the beach and doesn't offer ocean views. It has a small sun terrace with loungers, but could use a dipping pool. For equally refined service with blue views and easy beach access, the Can Cera's sister hotel, the Hotel Calatrava, is worth looking into.

Boutique Hotel Calatrava
Plaza Llorenc Villalonga 8

For a peaceful and indulgent respite in central Palma, this is one of the city's top luxury contenders. Hotel Calatrava's enviable location near the sea, its stunning views of the Seu Cathedral, and its proximity to the best the city has to offer -- restaurants, entertainment, museums -- all give it an enviable edge over similar properties. Rooms are spacious, airy, and tastefully decorated, with nods to the city's modernist artistic history. The spa is beautiful, complete with heated loungers, Finnish spa, and private yoga classes, and the on-site dining facilities offer traditional Spanish cooking with a stylish, but unpretentious twist. While the hotel does have a spectacular breakfast terrace, it could do with a rooftop pool like the nearby HM Balanguera.
