Platinum Hotel and Spa

The Platinum Hotel and Spa is a three-and-a-half-pearl residence-style property that's a short walk from The Strip. Its 255 air-conditioned suites are big one-bedroom apartments plus full kitchens, multiple flat-screen TVs, washers, dryers, and electric fireplaces in the living rooms. The off-Strip location keeps the overall atmosphere quiet. Free afternoon wine, plus happy hour drink and food specials at the bar, add value to a stay here, but the restaurant only gets mixed reviews from previous guests. Leisure opportunities aren't too numerous, but the hotel has an indoor/outdoor pool plus a full-service spa and a fitness room. Other amenities include a dog run, Wi-Fi, and valet parking. Travelers looking for a property with a livelier vibe and an on-site casino might opt for The Palms Casino Resort instead.

Residence Inn by Marriott Las Vegas Convention Center

Located across the street from the Las Vegas Convention Center (a five-minute walk away), the Residence Inn offers some nice freebies -- including internet service, buffet breakfast, and all-day coffee -- plus each room includes a fully equipped kitchen, each one renovated in 2012. But unless you're cooking at "home," there are better deals elsewhere.

Cancun Resort

Far from the Strip and other tourist attractions, Cancun is a family resort with lots of kid-friendly features -- and not much appeal for adults traveling without kids. On-site dining is limited to one restaurant, but the large apartment-style villas feature well-equipped kitchens with full-size refrigerators, dishwashers, and gas stoves. There's a spa and a fitness center, but the best feature is the large pool with a Mayan-style pyramid in the middle. For a family-friendly Off the Strip experience with far more features -- including 11 restaurants -- look into South Point Hotel and Casino.

Desert Tides

Big apartments at a low price. But poor maintenance, woeful service, dirt everywhere and a remote location make this the worst Las Vegas hotel Oyster has covered to date.

Club de Soleil All-Suite Resort

For those looking for a reasonably priced, one- to two-bedroom suite who don't mind being off the Strip, the Club De Soleil All-Suite Resort is a solid option. But keep in mind: this is a time-share property that also rents rooms. That means guests won't find a resort atmosphere and services, despite the name. For instance, there is no bar and no restaurant. And it's hard to avoid at least one sales pitch. But if that's OK, then guests can get a clean suite or studio apartment style for a bargain price by Vegas standards.

Courtyard by Marriott Las Vegas Convention Center

Located across the street from the Las Vegas Convention Center (about a five-minute walk) and a monorail station (to explore the Strip), the Courtyard is convenient, and it has all the essentials -- a 24-hour business center and free Internet -- but its 137 outdated guest rooms don't quite match those at the equally convenient Las Vegas Hilton.

Gold Coast Hotel & Casino

A modest property just off the Strip, the Gold Coast caters to locals with free parking and a 70-lane bowling alley. Rooms are bare bones, but the hotel itself offers some pleasant surprises: a small but nicely landscaped pool, authentic dim sum, and a staff that's easy to find.

Silverton Hotel and Casino

The 300-room Silverton Hotel and Casino is a three-pearl property with a lot of self-contained entertainment, from its own casino to a live entertainment venue. It's far from remarkable, and a 10-minute drive from the Strip, but it has the Vegas essentials. Along with ten different restaurants and bars (including some open 24 hours), there are an outdoor pool, a floor-to-ceiling aquarium with mermaid shows, and an attached Bass Pro Shop. Two room types offer a choice of rustic, or modern decor with work desks and safes, but lack conveniences such as coffeemakers and some have old tube-style TVs. Fees, which can easily stack up for those wanting mini-fridges or pool cabanas, are a notable downside too. The South Point Hotel and Casino has much more for kids and adults, but it's farther from the Strip.

Hampton Inn Tropicana

The lower-middle-range Hampton Inn Tropicana is near the airport and has a lot of free parking, making it a pragmatic choice for business travelers flying in and renting a car. It's also a viable spot for travelers looking to be near but not right on the bustling Strip. Free shuttles to the Strip and the airport make things even easier, plus are rates include a hot and cold breakfast, and there's an outdoor pool with adjacent hot tub. The 322 rooms have work desks, coffeemakers, and flat-screen TVs, though they lack mini-fridges and some have dated furnishings. It's worth comparing rates at the SpringHill Suites Las Vegas Convention Center, which has similar amenities.

Las Vegas Marriott

Right outside the Las Vegas Convention Center, this hotel offers ample business services and a well-equipped gym. Yet with a forgettable pool, no nightlife and remote location from the action on the Strip, it has little to recommend for anyone other than conventioneers. Plus, suites are on the small side.
