Hotel Five44

The Evelyn

The Gershwin Hotel has a lot of promise. It came under new management in 2013 and began a top-to-bottom makeover (slated to end sometime in 2014) that will turn the hotel from a basic, affordable option into a stylish boutique. Charming Beaux Arts design accents point to the hotel’s rich history, and clean rooms have flat-screen TVs, Frette linens, and C.O. Bigelow toiletries. The amenities and overall ambiance will improve after renovations are complete. tag:revisit 7/1/2014

Upper Yorkville Suites
1876 3rd Avenue Manhattan New York

Hotel Plaza Athenee

This Upper East Side boutique hotel possesses a deep-rooted commitment to service, luxury, and sophistication that regularly draws celebrities and socialites. The luxury hotel is located on a quiet residential block of brownstones one block from Central Park on the Upper East Side. The 134 rooms are sumptuous, with classic European decor and gorgeous bathrooms. Bar Seine and Arabelle restaurant are intimate and romantic, serving excellent fine-dining fare and cocktails, while Spa Valmont and the fitness center provide exclusive spaces to relax and rejuvenate. Above all, though, it's the hotel's reputation for service that's drawn both Princess Diana and Elizabeth Taylor to the hotel. For something a bit more youthful and modern, The Mark is located 13 blocks north.

The Gregory Hotel New York
42 West 35th Street Manhattan New York

The biggest selling point of The Gregory is its walkable location in the heart of West Manhattan, within a few minutes' stroll from Macy's and the Empire State Building. That said, the 132 rooms at this upper-middle-range property aren't bad either, with elegant but simple decor relying heavily on monochrome color tones. All come with flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges. Rooms lack coffee- and tea-making facilities, but there is free tea and coffee in the lobby every morning. There's also a small fitness center, a guest computer with a printer, and a restaurant with a good cocktail menu where guests can pick up breakfast for a fee. However, there are other options in the area that come with more perks, such as the Best Western Premier Herald Square, where breakfast is free and the rooms have coffeemakers

Royal Park Hotel
22 Sukhumvit Soi 6 Khwaeng Khlong Toei Khet Khlong Toei

The Royal Park Hotel is a budget hotel that doesn't offer much in terms of features or services, but has a convenient location on the charming Upper West Side. The location is the highlight here and it attracts budget travelers exploring the city. There are plenty of dining options and shops in the neighborhood, plus the 1, 2, 3, subway lines are just a two-minute walk away. The 60 guest rooms are small, tired, and have limited amenities that include flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi (some rooms have a poor connection). Bathrooms are either shared or private, but they're also small, cramped, and in need of updates. For more features, check out the West Side YMCA, where rooms are also small and even more simple, but guests have access to fitness facilities and two pools.

Sanctuary Hotel New York Times Square

The Sanctuary is a 111-room upscale boutique hotel close to the bustle and lights of Times Square and the Theater District. As its name indicates, the hotel strives to set a soothing vibe, and with low lighting, luxury decor, and a Buddhist theme, it succeeds. While the vibe is calm by day, in the evenings the restaurants and lounges on street level and on the roof cater to a beautiful crowd that likes to socialize and party. Rooms come equipped with cushy robes, spa-like showers, and minibars stocked with late-night snacks and spirits. Just note that some rooms may be noisy at night, some lack natural light, and there's no fitness center on-site (but guests get free day passes to Equinox).
