The Hotel at Times Square

The convenient Midtown location -- within walking distance of numerous sights, subways, and businesses -- is the main draw at this mid-range property. Rooms are modern (if bland) and there's an extensive free breakfast, but there aren't many features aside from the cramped, dark fitness center. It's a solid option for the price in this tourist-centric neighborhood, but it's worth comparing rates with the nearby (and nicer) Paramount Hotel.

Courtyard New York Manhattan Upper East Side

The Courtyard brand has let go of the red and green decor from days past, and renovations in 2013 and 2014 renovations brought the look here up to brand standards. This 226-room property on the Upper East Side caters to those in the healthcare professions (many hospitals are based nearby) as well as savvy travelers who know how to get around NYC using a MetroCard. Prices are fair for the renovated rooms -- ask for one with a south-facing view -- and features include laundry facilities, a fitness center and sauna/steam rooms. Just know that it's far from the tourist sights and a 10-minute walk to the 6 train.

Distrikt Hotel New York City

Opened in February 2010, this stylish 155-room boutique offers some of the best rooms for the price near Times Square, with 43-inch flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, Frette linens, and nightly turndown service. Freebies like in-room Wi-Fi, gym passes (for a fee), morning newspaper delivery, and iMac use in the lobby add value, but the location on a gritty block isn't ideal. The stylish, similarly-priced Mela Hotel, located just outside the heart of Times Square, is an excellent alternative.

AKA Times Square

Amidst sleek high rises on a nice block of 44th Street is this standout late Romanesque revival façade dating back to 1893 -- but this is where “old” ends. The fourth-generation Philly-based real estate group, Korman Communities, completely refurbished the interiors of this building to hold 106 contemporary apartment-style units. The only thing that remains from days past are the original window sizes, which for some studio, one- and two-bedroom units means less light -- and for lower floors, more street noise. Otherwise, guests can rely on clean and modern furnishings in the spacious living areas, the stainless steel kitchens, and luxe Bulgari toiletries in the bathrooms. Many guests are international travelers, and some are in corporate or transition mode, staying for a month or more, which helps lower their prices. A friendly but lean staff keeps things spic and span, and there's a two-floor lounge, bar, and rooftop terrace that are just begging to be used. The location is a few blocks from Bryant Park, grocery stores, restaurants, cafes and numerous Subway stations. Downsides include a fee for daily housekeeping and a lack of an on-site restaurant.

AKA Central Park

The AKA Central Park combines the comforts of home with amenities of a hotel, and exclusively offers stays of one week or more. Though lacking views of the park, guests are within a block of the entrance, as well as 5th Avenue stores such as Bergdorf's and Tiffany's. Studios, one- and two-bedroom units -- 134 in total -- have more space than a typical hotel room; all but the studios have full kitchens. The AKA brand has made a mark in four other cities, and the first-floor fireplace lounge here lives up to the brand's reputation for sleek decor, even if the rooms fall a little short. Other features include large fitness and business centers, and guests get backdoor access to an adjacent European-style cafe. It may also be worth comparing rates with the Wyndham Midtown 45 and The Kimberly, which both also offer kitchen-equipped suites.

Hotel Hayden

This 122-room in midtown Manhattan is a full-service hotel in miniature, with brightly decorated rooms, a tiny gym and business center, a stylish restaurant and lounge, and a 19th-floor rooftop bar. Many guests find the colorful and well-equipped rooms in need of an update, but ultimately deem them fine for the price (and for the excellent central location). Travelers could also check out the next-door Hilton Garden Inn Chelsea, which comes with all the brand-associated freebies: Wi-Fi, coffee, and baked goods.

Residence Inn New York Manhattan / Midtown East

This stylish Residence Inn has a distinctly homey vibe: Guests are encouraged to make use of the expansive Hearth Room lounge area throughout the day; all rooms are big, stylish suites featuring well-equipped kitchens; and a free breakfast buffet is served daily. The 24-hour business center and free Wi-Fi will appeal to business travelers, while families will likely appreciate the larger suites with separate living areas and sofa beds. Still, it's worth comparing rates with other properties in the area, such as the Wyndham Midtown 45, Kimberly Hotel, and Hyatt 48 Lex.

Staybridge Suites Times Square - New York City

Centrally located in Midtown Manhattan, and packing an array of amenities -- in-room kitchenettes, full-size refrigerators, free laundry machines -- that will appeal to both tourists and business travelers, the three-and-a-half pearl Staybridge Suites is that rare venue where guests who don’t want to splurge on luxury don’t have to choose between convenience and comfort. Those with a yen for more elbow room (and with bottomless budgets), however, may feel penned in.

Metro Apartments

Metro Apartments is a converted apartment building located on a deserted street one block from the Lincoln Tunnel in Hell's Kitchen. The hotel has some nice perks: Rooms are spacious, featuring full kitchens, flat-screen TVs, and (in some) balconies. Room sizes range from studios to two-bedrooms, making this a good option for families or large groups of friends. But as the rooms vary in size, they also vary in quality. While most feature modern, streamlined design, a few are dark and showing minor wear. There are no property features aside from laundry facilities, but for extended stay guests hoping to stay in Midtown West, this is a solid, affordable option.

Millennium Hilton New York One UN Plaza

Due to the two-minute walk from the United Nations Headquarters and almost 40 consulates within three blocks, most guests choose the upscale ONE UN New York for it's location. Extensive 2017 renovations brought glitzy decor to the public areas and 439 rooms feature high-level skyline views, smart TVs, iPod docks, and illy coffeemakers. There’s a pricey international restaurant (not open between mealtimes) and evening-only bar, plus an all-day coffee shop, and a 30th-floor lounge for continental breakfast and day and evening refreshments (not usually included). There’s also a well-equipped 24-hour gym, an indoor tennis court, in-room spa treatments, a 24/7 business center, and free Wi-Fi. Security is tight and some find the sniffer dog off-putting. Opposite Grand Central Terminal, the Fitzpatrick Grand Central Hotel is slightly cheaper and has a pub and more casual atmosphere.
