Bluegreen Vacations Club La Pension, Ascend Resort Collection

A time-share property that doubles as a hotel, the three-pearl Bluegreen Vacations Club La Pension has a large rooftop terrace and a great French Quarter address. Owned by Choice Hotels, the 67 French Decadent-style apartments each include a flat-screen TV, modern kitchenette or full-size kitchen, and contemporary bathrooms; balconies are available in some rooms. The elegant hotel has a laundry room and free Wi-Fi throughout, but no other hotel features. Complaints have been made about noise and a fee for daily housekeeping. Guests seeking a French Quarter hotel with additional amenities may want to compare prices at the French Market Inn, which has a small outdoor pool.

Hilton New Orleans Riverside

The Hilton New Orleans Riverside bills itself as a conference center for business travelers, but it feels more like a resort with its riverfront location and fantastic lineup of options for recreation, including indoor tennis courts, personal training, and Pilates classes (easily the most inclusive fitness offerings of any hotel in the city). The hotel's rooms are generic, but comfortable and contemporary. Note that there are fees for Wi-Fi, the fitness center, and the business center. But all in all, this is a fine pick for anyone wanting to explore the city -- the location on the Mississippi River, near the French Quarter, is excellent.

St. Vincent's Guest House
1507 Magazine St Intersection Of Magazine & Race Street

The 70-room St. Vincent's Guest House is a two-pearl property with a few niches in mind -- ghost hunters, artsy outsiders, and budget backpackers. It's situated in a grand 1861 building that was once an orphanage, and the Garden District location is within walking distance of boutiques and eateries. However, rooms are run down and dated, and there are upkeep issues and odd smells throughout. Guests hang out near the outdoor pool and courtyard, and there's an interior day room with free Wi-Fi as well. It's hard to beat the price here, though travelers looking for modestly nicer, historical digs near the French Quarter could consider The Pelham Hotel -- expect higher rates.

Loft 523 New Orleans

Loft 523 is the platinum standard of New Orleans’ boutique hotels, ushering in sleek, industrial decor (no fussy florals here) in spacious lofted rooms with large, luxurious baths. Because of its size (only 18 rooms), Loft 523 lacks some amenities -- guests will have to go around the corner to sister hotel International House for a restaurant or fitness room -- but room service is available through a popular nearby restaurant, and the property can often be a better overall bargain than a full-service luxury hotel. Partiers will appreciate that hip nightclub Le Phare is attached to the hotel, though room noise levels are louder during club hours.

Ace Hotel New Orleans

Opened in 2016, the four-pearl Ace Hotel New Orleans is a trendy property in downtown bordering the Warehouse District, about a 15-minute walk to the French Quarter. The eclectic hotel is in a 1920s Art Deco building, and it displays a delightful mix of old and new in its stylish lobby. Eating, drinking, and music are a big deal here, with a concert venue and multiple restaurants/bars including a wildly popular rooftop bar and outdoor pool. It also has a large fitness center. Rooms are spacious and well equipped, but their dark and moody decor isn’t for everyone. Those willing to trade style for affordability may prefer the mid-range Wyndham New Orleans French Quarter, which is only a two-minute walk from the French Quarter.

Hilton New Orleans St. Charles Avenue

The four-pearl Hilton New Orleans/St. Charles Avenue hotel has a historic, yet trendy, atmosphere and is located within walking distance of many famed New Orleans attractions. A large fitness center and an indoor pool and whirlpool are popular features, as is the on-site restaurant serving classic New Orleans fare. The 252 chic, spacious rooms have a subdued glamor and upscale amenities. In-room Wi-Fi is available for a fee, as is breakfast. Compared to other Hiltons, this particular hotel is a bit more expensive, though it's popular among business travelers with its ample meeting space and business center. For a hotel with similar amenities (plus free Wi-Fi), it may be worth checking the prices at Aloft New Orleans Downtown.

Crowne Plaza Hotel Astor-New Orleans

This modern, but slightly generic, 14-story downtown hotel is situated right on the corner of Bourbon and Canal Streets. It's literally steps from the action -- a distinction that also comes with homeless people outside the entrances and strip clubs on the street. The 693 rooms are convenient and reasonably spacious, if not stylish. Frequented in equal parts by tourists looking to be in the middle of it all and business travelers lured by the plentiful event/meeting spaces and conveniences -- like a 24-hour fitness center, pool, and attached Dickie Brennan's Bourbon House -- the Crowne Plaza Hotel New Orleans French Quarter is certainly not dull, and comes across as a well-visited and always-happening mid-range property.

Drury Inn & Suites New Orleans

Housed within the historic Cumberland Phone Building, this mid-range downtown NOLA hotel offers generously-sized, clean rooms with conveniences like free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, and microwaves. With additions to the old-world structure -- such as a lovely rooftop pool and whirlpool, and a tower of more modern rooms -- and a terrific location, it's a solid value pick. Freebies like daily happy hours and hot breakfast sweeten the deal. However, older rooms are more dated and some smell of smoke.

Holiday Inn Express New Orleans - St Charles

The trendy Hotel Modern is a quirky upper-middle-range boutique property with eclectic decor and a boho-meets-industrial-chic vibe. An on-site farm-to-table restaurant serves modern Southern fare and there's also a hip and atmospheric cocktail bar with crimson walls and plush seating. The 135 rooms are fairly bare and simply furnished, but clean, with modern amenities that include flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffeemakers, iPod docks, free Wi-Fi, and C.O. Bigelow products in the bathrooms. Situated on a large roundabout, the property neighbors several museums and is just a few steps away from one of the streetcars that reaches the French Quarter in about 20 minutes. Travelers seeking something of a similar character, but closer to the French Quarter, might want to consider the Royal Street Inn, another hipster hangout with a bar.

Le Richelieu in the French Quarter
1234 Chartres Street French Quarter New Orleans

Authentic and funky, this historic boutique -- located in a residential area on the French Quarter's far edge -- allows guests to experience the neighborhood as the locals do. It's also an easy walk to Frenchman Street, an exciting area in the Marigny experiencing a renaissance in live music and tapas-oriented restaurants. But while the old-world decor is charming enough in the lobby, it's less impressive in the slightly worn rooms, and bathrooms are in dire need of renovation.
