Smart Stay Hostel Munich City
Mozartstr. 4

Smart Stay Hostel Munich City is a budget youth hostel that sleeps 62 guests. Its prices and location are great, but it also has an unfortunate bed bug problem. Single and Double Rooms and beds in dorms are available, but don't expect little extras found in modern hostels, such as privacy curtains and reading lamps -- only the bare minimum, lockers and linens, are provided. Unfortunately, countless past guests have complained of bed bugs over the years, and at the time of our research (in 2018), the problem had seemingly not been fixed. That said, facilities aren't bad, and include a communal kitchen, a bar with cocktail service, and a free buffet breakfast along with Wi-Fi, parking, and foosball and pool tables. Still, the bed bug issue is too much to overlook, so budget travelers are better off staying at a hostel with fewer complaints, such as Wombat's Munich.

Hotel Metropol
Mittererstrasse 7

This 74-room, lower-middle-range boutique hotel is a solid choice for budget-conscious travelers. A free daily breakfast is included in the rate as is Wi-Fi, and the location is convenient for those exploring the city without a car, as it's a short stroll to the city's main squares and a few blocks from Munich's largest train station, Hauptbahnhof. Rooms have a bold, contemporary design and all the expected amenities, including flat-screen TVs, minibars, and work desks. But there's no on-site restaurant, gym, or business center. Budget travelers that would rather go the B&B route could try Bed and Breakfast Zeevat.

Bayerischer Hof Hotel
Promenadeplatz 2-6

The Bayerischer Hof Hotel was first opened in 1841 to accommodate King Ludwig I's esteemed guests. Today, it's still one of the city's top luxury hotels, and attracts royalty, politicians, and celebrities (former guests include Michael Jackson and Martin Scorcese.) Rooms are sophisticated and spacious by local standards, with a variety of decor schemes. Extensive features include some of the city's trendiest eateries and bars (a Michelin-star restaurant among them), an infinity-edge rooftop pool with great views, and a spa. The location right on Promenade Platz is within walking distance of most of the city's popular sights. If the Bayerischer Hof is fully booked, the nearby Charles Hotel is another luxury option worth considering.

LOUIS Hotel
Viktualienmarkt 6

The 72-room Louis Hotel's lively Munich setting -- between Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt -- attracts guests looking for a centrally located hotel full of amenities. There are a sauna, modern gym, Japanese restaurant with excellent cocktails, and a rooftop bar all on-site. This property also offers 24-hour front desk service and shoe polish service. Rooms are modern and understated with flat-screen TVs and views of the Alps or marketplace. Guests, though, complain that the animated location can result in some room noise. For a more relaxed setting, try the Cortiina Hotel.

Motel One Munich-Sendlinger Tor
Herzog-Wilhelm-Str. 28

The 244-room Motel One Muenchen-Sendl. Tor is a no-frills modern chain hotel with stylish decor. Centrally located and competitively priced, this hotel has a sleek lobby lounge that serves breakfast and cocktails, a courtyard lawn with lounge chairs, and on-site parking. Rooms are chic and minimal with blue accents, flat-screen TVs, and rooftop terraces in some (though rooms are missing standard elements like phones, safes, and minibars). The Eurostars Book Hotel has fully equipped rooms at similar prices.

Arthotel Munich
Paul-Heyse-Str. 10

Arthotel Munich is a 133-room, mid-range property characterized by vibrant artsy interiors and a funky, youthful vibe. While its location is convenient for the city's main train station and the edge of the Altstadt is walkable, there's little of interest in the immediate area and it can even feel sketchy. Though rooms lack hot drink facilities, an excellent free breakfast is served and the hotel bar is open until late. The TRYP Muenchen City Center is a cheaper option nearby and has a charming outdoor restaurant terrace, though limited Wi-Fi.

NH Collection Munchen Bavaria
Arnulfstr. 2

The 173-room NH Collection München Bavaria is a skyscraper hotel that surpasses other local hotels with its competitive prices and prime Munich location across from the main subway, tram, and bus stations. The hotel offers 24-hour front desk service, a modern breakfast room and bar, a summer terrace with panoramic views, and four functions rooms. Modern rooms feature flat-screen TVs, minibars, electric kettles, and Munich views. Guests, though, gripe that the Wi-Fi can be unreliable. The Angelo Hotel Munich Leuchtenbergring, for higher prices, reportedly has better free Wi-Fi.

CORTIINA Hotel
Ledererstr. 8

Located right in the center of town, the 75-room boutique-style Cortiina Hotel is on a side street a few blocks from Marienplatz -- the heart of old Munich -- with restaurants, shopping, and museums within easy walking distance. Sleek, chic, and modern, the Cortiina is filled with natural stone and wood. The Cortiina Bar & Restaurant, with a fireplace and lounge chairs, serves selected teas and handcrafted cocktails, and has become a Munich hot spot. The rooms, which have parquet floors, views of  the surrounding cobblestone streets, neutral-colored furniture and accents, are airy, clean, and comfortable, if a bit on the small side, and some guests might not like the frosted glass dividers that separate the sleeping area from the bathroom in some of the rooms. Some of the suites have fully equipped kitchens.

Hotel Kriemhild
Guntherstr. 16

The 18-room, family-run Hotel Kriemhild is located in a somewhat sleepy residential neighborhood near Nymphenburg Palace, and is six blocks northwest of Munich's main train station -- it's about a 15-minute train ride to the city center. The Kriemhild's rooms include suites with separate living and sleeping areas and air-conditioning (not a given in Munich), but aside from a computer station, the hotel has no business center, no fitness center, no common meeting areas, and the cold  breakfast buffet comes with a fee. But the hotel is clean, friendly, and accommodating, and has free Wi-Fi. Travelers might also want to  check out the nearby Nymphenburg Palace and the Hirschgarten.

Bed and Breakfast Zeevat
Feldbergstr. nr. 2

This four-room bed and breakfast on the outskirts of Munich has an intimate, friendly ambience and attractive if basic rooms, which share bathrooms. The hosts serve a good, hearty breakfast, and are on hand to help guests. The rooms, which range from Doubles to Triples to a Family Room and come with flat-screen TVs and microwaves, are simple but homey if a bit institutional. Although the rooms might not have the soundproofing found in large hotels, guests seem won over by the pure charm of the place, which includes a house dog.
