Beta Hotel Izmailovo

Built in 1980 for the Olympic Games, the three-pearl Izmailovo Beta Hotel has 975 rooms on 30 floors, and is one of five sister properties in Moscow. Rooms on the 15th floor and higher have striking city views, but room decor, which includes satin bedspreads in salmon pink or heavy maroon velvet draperies, is stuck in the 1980s. Features include nine AV-equipped conference halls that can hold up to 500 people, a gift shop, a restaurant, and two bars. Note that it's not a great option for families, and several past guests have reported sex workers soliciting guests in the lobby. For more modern (and pricier) lodgings, try the Mercure Arbat Moscow.

SunFlower Park Hotel

For business travelers or tourists willing to stay outside of Moscow's city center, the mid-range Katerina Park Hotel offers a good option at a value price. Located in the northern section of the Chertanovo district, it's about a half-hour drive to Red Square, or around an hour by metro. Simple, homey decor includes bright-colored walls and flower-print fabrics, while the hotel's 244 rooms come with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. The hotel has a restaurant and lobby bar, plus there's a free breakfast buffet, while the fitness center offers a sauna and Turkish bath. For something closer to the city center, travelers might want to check out the Mercure Arbat Moscow or Katerina City Hotel.

Radisson Collection Hotel Moscow
Kutuzovskiy pr-kt 2/1, Bld. 1

The Radisson Royal Hotel Moscow is a luxury chain property on the riverfront of the Moskva River. The Soviet Baroque building is one of Stalin's Seven Sisters skyscrapers, which define Moscow's skyline. Today, its interior features posh Regency-style decor in its 497 rooms and suites. Rooms are equipped with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, but you'll have to upgrade for an iPad and espresso machine. Hotel highlights include a spa, stunning indoor lap pool, large gym, a selection of restaurants and bars, and cruises on the hotel’s private yachts. There's extra security for the safety of the high-end clientele of foreign dignitaries and business travelers that are usually hosted here. For something that’s within walking distance of the city center, consider the five-pearl Hotel Baltschug Kempinski Moscow which has both Old World splendor and a juice bar.

Katerina City Hotel

Located south of Moscow's busy center along the riverfront, the upper-middle-range Katerina City Hotel caters mostly to business travelers looking for a reasonably priced stay. The location, in the Zamoskvorechye district, is near a local business complex but a metro ride away from tourist attractions. Its Scandinavian-style decor mixes a lot of wide stripes and natural woods to create a pleasant, clubby atmosphere. The 120 rooms have free Wi-Fi, tea/coffee facilities, heated bathroom floors, and comfortable beds. In addition to the eight conference rooms, there's also a computer workstation available for guests' use. Other perks include a free breakfast and a spa with a hot tub. By comparison, the nearby Mercure Moscow Paveletskaya is a little less expensive and has more urbane style, but isn't quite as close to the Riverside Towers business center.

Lotte Hotel Moscow
2 Bld., 8 Novinskiy Blvd.

Lotte Hotel Moscow is an elegant and grand five-pearl hotel with a refined vibe and staff that are reportedly quite welcoming. The 300 rooms have a high-end decor with flat-screen TVs, digital control panels, and soaking tubs. Features here are topnotch with an indoor pool and hot tub, Balinese-inspired spa, fitness center, meeting rooms, multiple dining options, and free Wi-Fi, breakfast, and parking. There's a shopping mall next door and it's a seven-minute walk to Arbat Street, but other tourist destinations required a car. Travelers could also consider Hotel Metropol Moscow which has similar amenities, rooms with minibars, and a location near the Kremlin and other main attractions.

The St. Regis Moscow Nikolskaya
Nikolskaya St., 12

This luxury hotel from the St. Regis chain offers a five-pearl experience in a plush and elegant setting. Think: gilt, chandeliers, fine art, and well-heeled travelers milling about the lobby. It features a prime Lubyanka Square location surrounded by restaurants, shops, and notable attractions. There are three dining choices on-site, ranging from Italian to a meat-only restaurant to a more casual and hip burger place, as well as a lobby lounge/bar and a cigar and cognac room. The spa impresses with its indoor pool beneath a frescoed ceiling, plus there's a Techno-Gym fitness center. The 210 spacious rooms and suites all have sitting areas and come with personal butler service, while decadent marble bathrooms have tubs and separate walk-in rainfall showers. The Hotel Baltschug Kempinski Moscow also offers a five-pearl stay, but at slightly lower rates on the Moskva River.

Hotel Metropol Moscow

A Moscow institution since opening in 1907, the Metropol oozes history and is a throwback to pre-Revolution Russia. While it might not have the "wow" factor of newer hotels, this luxury property has more antique charm. The 388 rooms are spacious and Old-World elegant, and all come with minibars, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs. The hotel's small indoor pool, sauna, and fitness center are welcome complements to its decadent dining options: a modern Russian-Scandinavian restaurant, an elegant cocktail bar, and a vast Art Nouveau dining hall with gourmet blini-and-caviar breakfast buffet accompanied by harp music. Prices are fair given the hotel's iconic status and prime location in central Moscow. It's also worth considering The Hotel National, a Luxury Collection Hotel, which has similar style and features, though is closer to The Kremlin and Red Square.

Hotel Baltschug Kempinski Moscow

Set inside an 1898 building, the luxury Hotel Baltschug Kempinski Moscow is an updated take on a grand Victorian hotel, and filled with marble, brass, and ornate ironwork. Some of Moscow's hotels sit closer to the city's big sights, yet few have this property's views, overlooking the Moskva River, the Kremlin, and St. Basil’s Cathedral. Its 227 guest rooms, which have detailed molding and marble-lined bathrooms, also come with free Wi-Fi, designer toiletries, and minibars. However, standard rooms lack the luxe finish of Suites that can have panoramic views of the city center. By comparison, the Hotel Metropol Moscow is another nearby, historic luxury hotel that can be slightly cheaper, but it hasn't been refurbished as recently.

Mercure Moscow Baumanskaya

This upscale 47-room property from the multinational Mercure brand strives to create -- or, at least, imitate -- a hip boutique hotel feel. Located in the Basmanny district, which has long been a favorite area among foreigners, the hotel cultivates an international aura both through its public spaces (including a Western-style eatery) and its modern room decor. The downside is that the hotel is short on features and not in walking distance of the city’s top sites. The Mercure Arbat Moscow, a larger (and pricier) four-pearl alternative, benefits from a more popular location; moreover, it has a fitness center with a sauna and a self-service business center -- two amenities that the Baumanskaya outpost lacks. But it is more traditional in terms of aesthetics and less intimate in terms of atmosphere.

InterContinental Moscow Tverskaya Hotel
Tverskaya St., 22

With a great location walking distance to Red Square, the InterContinental Moscow Tverskaya Hotel is a reliable luxury choice. From the sprawling lobby to the 203 guest rooms, the focus is on contemporary style, with pink, black, and white marble offset by bronze and glass sculptures and cute design touches like folksy matryoshka dolls. Few will shell out for the utter opulence of the Ulanova Royal Suite, with its own library, sauna, and terrace, but even the standard rooms here are luxe and stacked with amenities. Business travelers favor the hotel for its large, comfortable executive lounge and convenient location. Travelers looking for something with more personality might consider the historic Hotel Savoy, with striking architecture and an even more central location a five-minute walk from the Bolshoi Theatre.
