The four-pearl Paradis Plage stands out from other beachfront resorts with its surf school and yoga studio, but also because of its secluded location a 35-minute drive outside of town. The resort attracts travelers looking to be far from the tourist trappings of Agadir, while also having access to amenities such as a huge private beach and outdoor garden with sunbeds and a hot tub. The 105 large rooms have great balconies and most have kitchenettes, though not all have ocean views. A kids' club, full spa, and waterfront private-dining tent serving Moroccan cuisine provide extra reasons not to take the free shuttle into town each day. Travelers who want similar features from a hotel near the center of town could try the Hotel Riu Palace Tikida Agadir.

The 30-room La Maison des Oliviers is an upscale resort hotel set in attractive gardens 20 minutes' drive from Marrakech's medina. While the surrounding area is clearly in a stage of development, once inside the complex it feels totally secluded and particularly peaceful. The resort's exteriors and outdoor pool are particularly impressive, though a little more attention could be paid on in-room decor -- the Standard Rooms look especially sparse. Spend a little more on a suite, however, and decor improves significantly. Wi-Fi is not available in the rooms.
