Riad Jona
Riad zitoune el kedim, 34, Derb Jdid

The seven-room Riad Jona is a particularly attractive, upscale guesthouse located at the southern end of the medina, near the Bahia Palace, within a 10- to 15-minute walk to Djemaa el Fna square. Interiors have elegant touches, like filigree lanterns, ironwork, and scatted rose petals, adding to the romantic vibe. Facilities include an above-ground rooftop pool and a hot tub (for a fee). Rooms are elegantly finished, especially the suites, and lunch and dinner, prepared by a resident chef, is excellent. Those looking for more fashion-forward decor could try the Riad Elizabeth.

Adama Resort
Route d'Amizmiz, KM 7,5

The 57-room Adama Resort is an upscale complex set in large, attractive gardens in the countryside outside the city of Marrakech. This villa-only resort draws heavily on various Moorish and Moroccan architectural traditions while providing all the facilities you'd expect from a self-contained vacation resort including pools, spa, and a restaurant. Kitchen-equipped villas are spacious and stylish, though limited dining and no local supermarket can be an issue. All in all, for families with kids prioritizing relaxing by the pool over exploring old Marrakech, this is an attractive option, though sightseers might want to look elsewhere. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

Hotel Almas
79, Avenue Moulay Rachid

The 71-room Hotel Almas is a modern, mid-range hotel set in Marrakech's busy and buzzing Gueliz New City district. While the location isn't ideal for those looking to explore the old medina district, there are plenty of shopping and eating opportunities in the area. The main tourist attractions of the medina are a cab ride away. Rooms are modern, pleasant, and clean, though free Wi-Fi coverage is inconsistent and street noise can be a problem. Overall, it's far from the traditional Moroccan riad most tourists would go for, though very competitive prices are sure to attract those on a budget.

Palais Aziza & Spa
Mejjat 3/38, Cercle Ennakhil, Commune J’Nanate

The 28-room Mosaic Palais Aziza & Spa is a luxury boutique hotel blending kasbah-style architecture with traditional Moroccan decor and a palatial finish. Located in the Palmeraie, about a 15-minute drive from the bustling souks of the medina, the Mosaic Palais sits amid five acres of tranquil gardens and pools. All rooms have private terraces or balconies, and range from Deluxe Rooms with hot tubs to freestanding Pavilions and Villas with private gardens. The on-site spa offers a palette of custom treatments, along with the traditional hammam. The on-site dining is outstanding. Maroliano, adjacent to the Mosaic Bar and Lounge, serves Moroccan fare with an Italian twist, while the more casual La Pergola, with its "theater kitchen" and alfresco dining, is for lighter far. The Citrus Bar serves signature cocktails poolside.

Riad Al Rimal
43 Derb Fahl Ezzafriti, Quartier Laksour

With 17 rooms, Riad Al Rimal is one of the larger medina riads, and its location is excellent for exploring the bustling souks and the famous Djemaa el Fna, which is about a 10-minute walk away. It includes a hammam, and offers massages and various beauty treatments. It's one of the rare riads that has a small fitness room, with a treadmill, stationary bike, and weight-lifting machine. Rooms are colorfully decorated and verge on the lavish, though Standard Rooms are small. The rooftop terrace is a particular highlight here -- it has a hot tub and plenty of loungers and Berber-style daybeds. Rates are on par with other medina riads, and are perhaps a bargain, considering the added perks here.

Grand Mogador Menara
Avenue Mohammed VI

The 244-room Ryad Mogador Menara is located in the new city in the upmarket area of Hivernage, about a 10-minute drive to the heart of the medina, but not within walking distance of tourist attractions. The lobby is particularly palatial, and the outdoor pool is large with plenty of loungers. The spa has an indoor heated pool, treatment rooms for massages, and the traditional hammam. There's also a fully equipped fitness center, three restaurants (no alcohol is served), and a more casual cafe and lounge. While rooms are spacious with large balconies, decor is a tad lackluster, and Wi-Fi is practically nonexistent. Rates are reasonable for this upscale property, and the hotel can be a good choice for those who want pool and spa facilities, and prefer to stay outside the medina. Travelers may want to compare rates with the Ryad Mogador Kasbah, an upper-middle-range hotel with similar features.

Riad Lorsya
61, Derb El Hammam, Mouassine

With its plunge pool, courtyard, and rooftop terrace, the Riad Lorsya typifies the medina's guesthouses, and it has a more authentic Moroccan vibe than others. Some rooms are particularly plush and romantic or bright, while others are dark; and the Mamounia room lacks windows entirely -- though that keeps it cool. One traditional feature that's missing: a hammam. There's also no on-site spa facilities, but in-room massages can be arranged. Prices might be a tad higher than elsewhere, but guests would be hard pressed to find a riad this smack-bang in the center of the medina for much less. Still, guests could compare rates with the centrally located Riad Karmela.

Les Borjs de la Kasbah
Rue du Mechouar, Kasbah

The 18-room Les Borjs de la Kasbah is an upscale, superbly recreated Moroccan riad-style hotel located just south of the Marrakech Medina. Set right next to the Royal Palace, it's well positioned for exploring the bustling souks and sights of the old city, and is a 20-minute walk to Jemaa El-Fna square. It's a genuine oasis of calm and even the rooms are soundproofed from the city's hubbub. While the pool area is attractive, spa decor is underwhelming in parts. Rooms are charming with traditional style, if not as ornate or richly decorated as at some other upscale hotels, and Wi-Fi is free throughout. This is a fine option for the price, but those looking for a slightly more central location may want to consider the similarly priced Riad Lorsya.

Riad Dar Massai
31 Derb Sbaia Kasbah Medina

The five-room Riad Dar Massai is a traditional Moroccan hotel located in the southern end of the city's Medina, a 15-minute walk from Jemaa el-Fna and the souks. Decor is muted throughout, from the courtyard to the rooms, which are arranged around a central courtyard and feature air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi. The rooftop terrace is a highlight, with shaded loungers and Medina views. There’s a small plunge pool in the central courtyard, with seating areas for guests to relax. A Moroccan breakfast is served each morning on the terrace (included in the rates), and the restaurant offers traditional fare for evening meals. Prices are fair for the Medina, but guests looking for a spa and hammam may try nearby Le Borjs de la Kasbah, where rates are higher.

Les Résidences Du Domaine
km 9 Route De L'ourika

Les residences du domaine is an upscale property with Atlas Mountain views, and it feels like a quiet oasis removed from the seething masses of Marrakech center. Only 20 minutes from the airport, but difficult to find, the hotel contains 10 spacious villas with stunning, traditional Moroccan decor and kitchenettes (that lack utensils). The peaceful grounds are filled with olive trees, and the hotel has a serene outdoor pool, and a restaurant serving Moroccan cuisine -- but guests must bring their own alcohol. Those wanting a getaway with peaceful sunbathing will find the hotel just the thing, but for more action, travelers may want to look elsewhere. A good alternative could be the Sofitel Marrakech Palais Imperial, a 10-minute walk from the medina that also offers peaceful poolside lounging.
