Club Bali Hai Moorea Hotel
PO Box 26 Moorea

Open since 1962, Club Bali Hai Moorea Hotel is one of the oldest hotels on the island. Not much has changed since the value-oriented establishment first opened its doors, which is evident from the dated decor and lack of modern amenities like a spa or fitness center. But Bali Hai’s storied history, stunning location on Cook’s Bay, and affordable nightly rates continue to attract guests year after year. Plus, freebies like Wi-Fi, kayak and snorkel gear, and a weekly Polynesian show are definite perks. Guests who don’t mind spending a bit more per night should check out Green Lodge, a smaller property with nicer rooms and amenities.

Green Lodge
Motu Temae, Temae Moorea Teavaro

Opened in 2010 by French couple, Isabelle and Jean-Luc, Green Lodge is a charming beachfront "pension" (guesthouse) with six Polynesian-style bungalows. Green Lodge is best suited for independent families, couples, and  solo travelers looking to explore Moorea. Its location behind the airport is convenient for arrivals and departures, but is far removed from popular tourist attractions, so guests will likely want to rent a car. On-site amenities include a small pool and a beautiful beachfront, as well as exceptional meals prepared by Isabelle. Those looking for something a bit more centrally located might prefer Hotel Les Tipaniers, but it lacks Green Lodge’s hospitable owners and charming decor.

Hotel Les Tipaniers
Haapiti

Hotel Les Tipaniers is a fantastic option for budget travelers in Moorea. The two-pearl property is well-kept, and has an authentic Polynesian feel, with thatched-roof bungalows and a gorgeous beachfront. There aren’t many on-site amenities, like a pool, spa, or fitness center, but there are two restaurants and free Wi-Fi. One major drawback is rooms’ lack of air-conditioning. Those who can’t live without AC might prefer Hotel Hibiscus, a slightly more expensive property with a few more amenities, but a subpar beach.

Pension Motu Iti
BP 189 Maharepa

Cash-strapped travelers looking for a place to sleep can find so-so accommodations at Pension Motu Iti— a scrappy guesthouse that feels more like a bad hostel. Pension Motu Iti has five private bungalows, and one dormitory-style room with a shared bathroom. Though we wouldn’t really recommend staying here at all, the bungalows are without a doubt the better pick, as the dormitory is dirty, hot, and extremely buggy. Plus, there aren’t any locks on the door, and there’s nowhere for guests to store valuables. None of the rooms have air-conditioning and getting eaten alive by bugs is a near guaranteed experience. The pension has a tiny beach and an on-site restaurant, but the beach is rocky and the restaurant’s food is overpriced for the quality. Hotel Kaveka is more expensive, but still fairly budget-friendly, and has much nicer rooms and a better restaurant.
