Hôtel Le Germain Montréal

The upscale Hotel Le Germain Montreal is a 101-room property with sophisticated, modern decor and a business-friendly vibe. The hotel is located in downtown Montreal, right across from McGill University and within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants, and public transportation. Guest rooms feature simple but stylish modern decor, goose-down bedding, Nespresso coffeemakers, minibars, and Tivoli sound systems. The hotel has a bar and gourmet restaurant, which serves up a free daily breakfast buffet. Free espresso is available in the lobby, and room service is offered during limited hours. The hotel's 24-hour fitness center is small but functional, but there's no pool and spa services are only offered in-room. The Omni Mont-Royal Hotel, which is just a block away, offers a large, seasonal outdoor pool, extensive fitness facilities, and an on-site spa, but Wi-Fi and breakfast cost extra.

Chateau Versailles

Chateau Versailles, a 65-room, upper-middle-range boutique hotel on Sherbrooke Street, an elegant thoroughfare known for its historic mansions, is a 15- to 20-minute walk from downtown Montreal. Comprising four historic townhouses, the hotel is filled with fireplaces, ceiling friezes, and antiques, and its traditional guest rooms come with Keurig coffeemakers and minibars, but some show wear and tear, and the free Wi-Fi connection is spotty. The free breakfast buffet includes fresh croissants, and the hotel has a small gym and sauna but no bar or full-service restaurant. Guests seeking more modern accommodations closer to downtown could try the similarly priced Hilton Garden Montreal Centre-Ville.

Hotel Chez Swann

Hotel Chez Swann is a three-pearl boutique in downtown Montreal, close to several attractions and the McGill University campus. Its 23 elegant, contemporary guest rooms feature colorful, artsy decor with lavish beds and peek-a-boo showers. They lack coffee- and tea-making facilities and minibars, but do have flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. The hotel offers a decent set of features, including an on-site restaurant, juice bar, free breakfast, and a tiny spin studio. The W Montreal is a good alternative in the area that also has peek-a-boo bathrooms, as well as three bars, a spa, and a better equipped gym -- but in-room Wi-Fi incurs a charge and rooms aren't soundproofed.

Hotel Espresso Montreal Centre-Ville/Downtown

The 205-room Hotel Espresso is a value hotel on the edge of downtown Montreal that attracts travelers on a budget. It offers a seasonal outdoor pool and a decently equipped fitness center, as well as a restaurant -- though some report poor food quality. Guest rooms are a mix of new and dated decor, but all have flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, Keurig coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. However, many guests complain of cleanliness issues, moldy bathrooms, slow internet connections, and noise, among other problems. Le Square Phillips Hotel and Suites might be a better choice, offering an indoor pool, rooms with kitchenettes, and a free breakfast -- all at a similar price.

Hotel Nelligan

The 105-room Hotel Nelligan is a four-pearl boutique hotel with a great location in the heart of Old Montreal. Attractive rooms nicely combine historic details such as exposed brick walls with modern amenities like flat-screen TVs and minibars. Some have fireplaces, and others feature huge balconies with beautiful views of the city. Suites are available with fully stocked kitchens. The hotel's well-regarded Verses Restaurant serves French fare for all meals, and the brasserie is a lively place for late-night drinks and eats. There's also a trendy rooftop terrace that's open in warmer months. The hotel lacks a spa, but the small fitness center is open 24/7. As an alternative, the nearby Auberge du Vieux-Port is a similar property with free breakfast and rooms that feel just a touch more styled.

Auberge le Jardin d'Antoine
2024 Rue Saint-Denis Ville-Marie Montréal Montréal

Located on Rue St. Denis in Montreal's lively Latin Quarter, Auberge Le Jardin d'Antoine offers budget-friendly bed-and-breakfast-style accommodations in a three-story townhouse. The 25 guest rooms are well-maintained and done up in a simple, homey style. Amenities include AC, flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi, and a basic breakfast is included in the room rate. The real boon here are the upgraded rooms, which feature whirlpool tubs and separate showers. There's a small outdoor terrace and breakfast room, but no elevator and few other common areas. Travelers looking for a boutique-hotel ambience might want to also consider Le Relais Lyonnais nearby, which has a  an in-house cafe.

Sofitel Montreal Golden Mile

The Sofitel Montreal is a 258-room luxury property on posh Sherbrooke Street in downtown Montreal, a few blocks from Mont Royal Park. The hotel is a good choice for business travelers seeking artsy sophistication, and for those visiting McGill University, which is next door. Guest rooms are luxe, with such creative decor touches as Impressionist-style paintings and black-and-white framed photographs, and come equipped with goose-feather bedding and floor-to-ceiling windows. The hotel has an upscale restaurant that serves seasonal French cuisine, and an elegant event space. The fitness center, however, is tiny with outdated equipment. Guests might want to compare rates at the nearby Omni Mont-Royal Hotel, which has a somewhat larger fitness center and a pool.

InterContinental Montreal

Located in the World Trade Centre complex, about midway between the downtown business district and tourist-friendly Old Montreal, this luxury-chain hotel lives up to its four-and-a-half-pearl status. Its 357 tasteful contemporary rooms features big windows and marble bathrooms, plus modern conveniences like flat-screen TVs and iPod docks. There’s an array of upscale amenities, too -- including a fitness center (complete with a saltwater lap pool, well-equipped exercise room, and a sundeck), a broad range of function facilities, a popular Provencal restaurant, and a trendy yet traditional cocktail bar. Travelers looking for more personality should try the boutique Hotel Nelligan instead, which offers a historic setting.

Gite du Plateau Mont-Royal

The Gite du Plateau Mont-Royal is a family-run hostel in the heart of the vibrant Plateau Mont-Royal neighborhood. The Victorian walk-up has been restored to maintain historic accents like original molding, hardwood floors, and embossed cast-iron radiators. All 26 rooms feature quirky Salvation Army finds, like kitschy lamps and old school desks, but lack air-conditioning and TVs. While the en-suite bathrooms are clean, some shared bathrooms show signs of wear and -- during our 2017 visit -- the communal bathtub needed cleaning. As an alternative, the similarly historic Abri du Voyageur in the Quartier des Spectacles is more affordable. However, the Gite is a better option for travelers wanting perks like a great breakfast featuring homemade pancakes and real maple syrup, plus planned cultural activities and discounts at festivals.

Novotel Montreal Centre

Novotel Montreal Centre offers spacious rooms with clean, contemporary decor (think: Ikea), and a convenient location in Downtown Montreal, right next to shopping on Sainte-Catherine Street. But there are few features -- just a decent fitness center, a solid restaurant with outdoor seating, and meetings rooms -- and there's a fee for Wi-Fi.
