Sheraton Montevideo Hotel
Calle Victor Solino 349

The upscale Sheraton Montevideo Hotel has plenty of corporate appeal, with its 207 rooms, event spaces, and comprehensive fitness center -- just don't expect the epitome of style. Rooms are homey, with slightly dated wall art and bland color palettes alongside simple furniture. The hotel is attached to a shopping mall and features a pool and two hot tubs, though its best feature is its trendy Punta Carretas location near boutiques and great dining. The Centro and Ciudad Vieja require a cab to reach, and the hotel lacks freebies like Wi-Fi and breakfast. Those who want an experience with more personality should consider nearby My Suites, a boutique wine-themed hotel with lower rates.

Radisson Montevideo Victoria Plaza Hotel
Plaza Independencia 759

The three-and-a-half-pearl Radisson Montevideo Victoria Plaza Hotel looks impressive on paper. It's location Montevideo's Plaza Independencia is ideal for business guests and tourists, and features include a nearly Olympic-size pool, on-site spa and beauty salon, and a restaurant with panoramic views of the city. Decor in the 253 rooms is dated, though, and upgrades like properly sealed windows and more power outlets are needed. Breakfast is free, but free Wi-Fi is extremely limited. Similarly priced My Suites offers more generous free Wi-Fi plus a free buffet breakfast with rooms that are more thoroughly contemporary, though it's not in the business district.

Intercity Montevideo
Rua Ibiray esq. Echeverria, 2398, Punta Carretas

In Montevideo's trendy Punta Carretas, this three-and-a-half-pearl property is close to the city's waterfront promenade plus dining and nightlife. The subdued 74-room hotel appeals to a broad cross section of travelers. Its business center, free and functional Wi-Fi, and small fitness center draw business guests, while the combination of price, location, and modern amenities make this a valuable choice for tourists looking for a more intimate alternative to Montevideo’s big-name hotels. Rooms are simple, modern, and stylish, with flat-screen TVs and minibars, but they do pick up a bit of noise from neighbors or elevators. It might be worth comparing with My Suites, a wine-themed boutique that’s in the area.

Hotel Iberia
Maldonado 1097

The budget Hotel Iberia offers a solid and simple stay in the center of Montevideo. Rooms are basic and clean, with bright colors employed in sometimes excessive ways -- and the hotel is a fine choice for those looking for a cheap and friendly experience near plenty of tourist sights. The hotel has few features beyond a computer station, and breakfast is not included. The immediate neighborhood isn't the most appealing at night, but that’s hard to avoid in Montevideo's Centro. Guests wanting to be closer to Ciudad Vieja could investigate Hotel Palacio, another budget option with more old-world charm.

Cala Di Volpe Boutique Hotel
Parva Domus 2531

The mid-range Cala di Volpe has a prime address on Montevideo's Rambla, a promenade that snakes along the city's coast. The modern fitness center, abundant breakfast buffet, and afternoon tea service . This 72 rooms with flat-screen TVs and minibars are a solid alternative to the big brand-name hotels in the area, and rates are more reasonable. The decor is unmemorable, though, and it doesn't live up to its own boutique hotel claims. That fact aside, guests flock here in droves for the prime waterfront setting, though nearby My Suites Hotel Montevideo offers a more sophisticated vibe and free wine tastings.

My Suites
Juan Benito Blanco 674

The three-and-a-half-pearl My Suites Montevideo delicately balances familial charms and modern sophistication in one of the city's nicest neighborhoods. The 40 contemporary rooms are sharp and sober, with comforts like microwaves, minibars, spacious bathrooms, and air-conditioning. The hotel is focused on local products, particularly Uruguayan tannat wine, and features a wine shop, free daily tastings, and wine bar. Things like parking and on-site dining can be pricey, though there is plenty of excellent food to sample in the hotel's upmarket Pocitos neighborhood. Intercity Hotel and Cala di Volpe are both solid alternatives within the same neighborhood, though they lack My Suites' wine-themed perks.

Esplendor by Wyndham Montevideo Cervantes
Soriano 868

The 84-room Esplendor Montevideo Hotel is a decent mid-range option in the middle of the city, though it has some problems. This historic property’s rotating art exhibit is impressive, and the hotel’s proximity to the waterfront and Ciudad Vieja is prime. The on-site spa and pool are also a nice plus in downtown Montevideo. Unfortunately, the hotel’s striking period architecture and lovely interior design don’t compensate for some crucial drawbacks -- modern, but austere rooms show significant wear and tear, had weak Wi-Fi, and leaky showers. At the price, though, Esplendor’s offerings still outdo nearby competition, like Orpheo Express, which has an on-site cafe but not much else in the way of amenities.

Hotel Palacio
Bartolome Mitre 1364

The 15-room Hotel Palacio is a value option at the edge of the Ciudad Vieja with old-school rooms featuring flat-screen TVs and air-conditioning. It’s a historic hotel, and one whose age-old charm is as emblematic of the district as the surrounding museums and architecture. The classical factor has some drawbacks: there are limited outlets in rooms, rickety floors, outdated bathrooms, and no on-site restaurant. The location is ideal for those who want the best starting point for exploring Montevideo’s most picturesque district by day, but those looking for dining and nightlife should consider Intercity Premium in the elegant Punta Carretas neighborhood -- it's a more sophisticated (and pricier) alternative.

Puerto Mercado Hotel
Cerrito 262, Esquina Pérez Castellanos

Stepping into Puerto Mercado Hotel is a welcome surprise, as it’s immediately clear from the decor that this mid-range hotel is a step above its similarly priced competition. Classy interiors are impeccably clean, and extras include a bar and lounge. The 51 rooms are simple and modern, and include flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. The immediate area is a bit of a mixed bag -- while Ciudad Vieja is arguably Montevideo’s most charming neighborhood by day, it turns into a ghost town and can actually be dangerous at night. Rooms are compact here, though that's the case at most Ciudad Vieja hotels, and the free breakfast at Puerto Mercado puts it a step above nearby Palacio Hotel on the value scale.

Dazzler By Wyndham Montevideo
21 de Septiembre

This mid-range chain outpost, one of 10 throughout the Americas, fits with the Dazzler brand's well-located, on-trend ethos. The Dazzler Montevideo is located in lively Punta Carretas -- within walking distance of boutiques, dining, and nightlife -- and offers contemporary, functional design and a range of top-notch amenities. This includes a spacious gym, sauna and rooftop pool, and 249 sharp rooms with modern conveniences and a slightly mod style. Breakfast isn't the best, but there are plenty of other options nearby. For the price and location, the Dazzler shines bright, but those with deeper pockets might compare with nearby Intercity Premium, where there are better breakfasts and bigger rooms.
