The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park

The Ritz-Carlton New York Central Park is a classic luxury hotel that sits directly across from Central Park, on Central Park South, in an area teeming with upscale restaurants and shops. The 259 guest rooms and suites are spacious and elegantly decorated, many feature views of Central Park. Some rooms come with Club Lounge access and butler service is available for a fee. Auden Bistro offers pre- and post-theater menus, and cocktails and afternoon tea can be had at the glamorous Star Lounge. There's no pool, but La Prairie Spa and a modern fitness center offer luxe places to relax and work out. Another five-pearl option is the nearby St. Regis New York. It has a snazzier look and free butler service, but is four blocks from Central Park.

JW Marriott Essex House New York

The iconic, 528-room JW Marriott Essex House New York is a luxury hotel located right across the street from the southern edge of Central Park. Art Deco-style rooms and suites are elegant and comfortable, with great beds, large flat-screen TVs, and minibars. Many have wonderful park views, but some are showing wear despite the extensive 2017 renovations (and high price tag) and overlook a wall. The spa is excellent, and the on-site Southgate Bar & Restaurant is popular among visitors and locals alike. While the Essex House is among the most expensive hotels in Manhattan, pesky fees abound, including a daily resort fee that doesn’t cover in-room Wi-Fi or valet parking. Travelers looking for a truly standout property should consider the Mandarin Oriental, New York, which is nearby and has well-sized rooms with impressive bathrooms.

Casamia 36 Hotel

While certainly small, the 36 Hudson Hotel doesn't have quite enough character to qualify as a boutique property. It's in a slightly less central part of Midtown West, but within walking distance of the Javits Convention Center and Hells Kitchen. The 39 rooms are reasonably modern, with amenities including free Wi-Fi, iPod docks, and coffeemakers, though most are small to the point of feeling cramped; there's also nothing at all at the hotel besides the lobby and the guest rooms. It's a decent value for the area, but for a Midtown hotel with more features, consider the similarly priced TRYP New York City Times Square South or Paramount Hotel.

Fairfield Inn & Suites New York Manhattan Times Square

This mid-range hotel offers a range of extras that make it a solid value, including free Wi-Fi and free breakfast (the only hot items, however, are heat-and-eat egg sandwiches). The indoor/outdoor rooftop bar, which is particularly popular during the summer, boasts views of the Hudson. Contemporary rooms feature spacious work desks, large flat-screen TVs, and iPod docks. There is a fitness center, though it's small and lacks weight-training machines, and the Midtown West location is within walking distance of Times Square -- but the street is gritty. All in all, it offers decent value for the area, but it may be worth comparing rates with the TRYP New York City Times Square South, which is more upscale but often similarly priced.

Crowne Plaza HY36 Midtown Manhattan

The 2017-opened Crowne Plaza H36 Midtown Manhattan is a contemporary, upper-middle-range property with a great location near Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, and multiple subway lines. The 251 rooms are decently sized and outfitted with comfy beds, ample charging ports, mini-fridges, and showers. Some minor outside noise can be heard, though there are designated quiet floors. A street-side restaurant and bar serves tasty American fare, and room service is available during select hours. Other amenities include free Wi-Fi, meeting spaces, and a small but well-equipped fitness center with treadmills, Peloton bikes, and free weights. The busy surrounding area with ongoing construction may be a bit hectic for some, though it's convenient for both business and leisure travelers. For something with a bit more charm, consider the 48-room Casablanca Hotel, which provides free breakfast.

Club Quarters Hotel, opposite Rockefeller Center

The 203-room Manhattan Centre Hotel is the slightly older sister property to the Jewel Hotel a few doors down. Like its neighbor, the hotel's biggest draw is its prime Midtown location, across the street from Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall. Rooms tend to be a bit dark, but are but clean and modern, with flat-screen TVs and iPod docks. A small but modern fitness center, free Wi-Fi, and access to the members-only Terrace Club help make this a good value.

Radio City Apartments

This 112-room affordable property is a block from Radio City Music Hall and close to Times Square. The studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments have been around for more than a few years, just like the people who run the place like clockwork; it attracts repeat guests for a reason. The spacious upper-middle-range units feel homey and most contain modern kitchenettes with coffeemakers and microwaves. There’s free Wi-Fi throughout, and a comfortable lobby for checking e-mail and reading one of the free newspapers. For those who don't mind sacrificing traditional hotel features (there is no restaurant, bar, or fitness center), it's one of the best options for the price in this tourist-centric location.

Hyatt Herald Square New York

Sophistication is the name of the game at the upscale Hyatt Herald Square New York, a contemporary high-rise hotel located a four-minute walk from the Empire State Building in central Manhattan. Features mostly focus on trendy dining spots, from a seasonal rooftop bar to an American bistro and espresso bar. Guests won’t find a lot to do in the hotel beyond a small fitness center and restaurants and bars. Valet parking is New-York-City pricey and breakfast costs a fee, too. The 122 nicely decorated rooms are small, but most Big Apple hotel rooms are, so at least these are outfitted with mini-fridges and coffeemakers. For those sold on rooftop bars, The James New York is a stylish alternative with a hopping rooftop bar and pool, but it's in SoHo.

Best Western Premier Herald Square

Situated in the bustling heart of midtown Manhattan just a five-minute walk from the Empire State Building, the mid-range Best Western Premier Herald Square hotel is ideally located near Penn Station and city hotspots, like Bryant Park. The property’s 94 rooms are tiny but tastefully decorated in a palette of green and purple and have flat-screen TVs, coffee/tea service, and comfortable beds. There’s a cozy on-site bar and lounge, plus a small fitness center, free hot daily breakfast, and free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. Those looking to stay in this area could compare prices with the similar mid-range Hampton Inn Manhattan - 35th St.

Life Hotel
แขวงถนนพญาไท เขตราชเทวี

Opened in 2017, the upper-middle-range Life Hotel is the latest incarnation of the 19th-century building that once held the offices and staff living quarters for "Life" magazine. The hotel's design reveals careful attention paid to the building's past, from the parquet marble floors in the lobby to the wrought-iron-framed beds (with luxe mattresses) in its 98 rooms. Room details like copper grating, restored wall moldings, and glass doorknobs are met with generous modern amenities, such as 60-inch flat-screen TVs, Google Chromecasts, and dedicated Wi-Fi hotspots. Life Hotel's boutique atmosphere makes it a welcome alternative to the many characterless hotel options in this part of Midtown. However, those looking for a similarly priced boutique hotel with more features could try the trendy Arlo NoMad, which has a rooftop bar and several co-working spaces.
