Palmeiras Beach Club at Grove Isle
4 Grove Isle Drive Coconut Grove Miami

Isolated on its own, 20-acre island off the coast of funky Coconut Grove, the Grove Isle offers big rooms (each with a balcony and a stunning view), a spa, 12 tennis courts, an open-air restaurant, a superb fitness center, and a marina. But there's no beach, just a patch of sand on some concrete by the pool, some rooms and public areas need updating, and the remote location means there's not a lot to do (an upside for those in search of tranquility).

SLS Brickell
1300 S Miami Ave

The 124-room SLS Brickell is an upscale hotel with a hip boutique feel and bustling location in Miami's Brickell financial district. Guests can expect a white, black, and pale-pink color palette in the Philippe Starck-designed rooms and suites, plus thoughtful minibar items, luxe bath products, and balconies. This hotel has two celebrity chef-led restaurants, a rooftop pool area, and a state-of-the-art fitness room. There are also a small spa, beach club access at the Delano South Beach, and a resort fee that covers Wi-Fi, beach chairs, laundry services, and house car drop-offs. For those wanting a luxury property with a more traditionally elegant feel, the Four Seasons Hotel Miami across the street may be a better fit.

PULLMAN Miami Airport hotel

The PULLMAN Miami Airport hotel (formerly Sofitel Miami) is one of the only upscale hotels near the airport, and delivers on everything the brand is known for -- feathertop beds, sophisticated style, and a little French flavor. The neighborhood has fast food restaurants and a CVS pharmacy. Expect a 30-minute drive to Miami Beach with traffic. Sophisticated rooms have ocean or city views and French Lanvin products in the bathrooms.

Best Western Premier Miami International Airport Hotel & Suites

The 144-room Best Western Premier Miami International Airport Hotel is a modern, mid-range property about a 10-minute drive from the Miami International Airport. A free shuttle is offered to the airport and there is a nice outdoor pool and fitness center on-site. While the hotel is warm and welcoming, the immediate area is not, and Miami Beach is a 30-minute drive away. Contemporary rooms are spacious, clean, and include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and microwaves. There's a modern, casual restaurant on-site, but no free breakfast.

Days Inn by Wyndham Miami International Airport

Undergoing a major renovation in January 2015, the Days Inn Miami International Airport lands a couple steps above other budget hotels in the chain. Rooms are bright, clean, and come with coffeemakers -- some have views of the outdoor pool. Bonuses on-site include a huge sports bar and lounge, game room, outdoor pool, and free airport shuttle, bringing this property up to par with mid-range airport hotels, but at a more attractive price tag.

Hotel Roma Golden Glades Resort

The Hotel Roma Golden Glades Resort is a centrally located value hotel with 105 air-conditioned rooms. Decor and furnishings are dated -- rooms still have tube-style TVs -- and some guests have complained that the bathrooms lack adequate towels. Features include a large outdoor pool that's surrounded by greenery and statues, but seating is limited. Unusual for a budget property, the Roma levies a mandatory daily resort fee to cover Wi-Fi, pool access, and parking.

Element Miami International Airport

The 209-room Element Miami International Airport is an extended-stay hotel near the airport and not far from Jackson Memorial Hospital. The hotel offers on-site buffet and barbecue dining, a happy hour, an airport shuttle service, a heated pool, a gym, and a business center in the lobby. Stylish rooms include kitchens and flat-screen TVs, and some have lake views. However, airplanes constantly fly overhead, which can lead to noise. Guests looking for a quiet stay may want to compare rates at the nearby Hampton Inn & Suites - Miami Airport/ Blue Lagoon, which reportedly has less airplane traffic disturbance.

Crowne Plaza Miami Airport

For a mid-range hotel that underwent a series of major renovations in 2013, the Crowne Plaza Miami Airport doesn’t feel as bright and clean as the similarly priced Sheraton down the road. Room decor is standard for the chain: a neutral color palette and dark wood furniture. With a fabulous fitness center, super comfortable beds, free Wi-Fi access, frequent airport shuttle and several meeting rooms, this is a convenient and budget-friendly stop for business guests and stopover airport stays.

Travelodge by Wyndham Miami Biscayne Bay

Renovated in 2009, Motel Bianco is a modern, value hotel with 39 rooms in Miami’s up-and-coming Design District. A breakfast of bagels, cereal, and pastries, is included in the room rate, and there's free Wi-Fi in the public areas and some of the rooms. While some guests complain about the cleaning and the cash deposit required for the room key and remote, it might be tough to find other hotels in this price range. Young travelers on a budget who don't mind sharing a bathroom might want to check out the South Beach Hostel, a lively spot in a location convenient to South Beach's nightlife.

Doubletree by Hilton Grand Hotel Biscayne Bay

Located inside "the Grand" -- a business district complex of offices, condos, convenience shops, and five so-so restaurants -- the 152-room Doubletree is a good but not great choice. It has an Olympic-size pool, a huge Jacuzzi, and a modern gym, but cleanliness is questionable and the rooms are mediocre. Nearby, the similarly priced Hyatt Regency offers bigger, cleaner rooms.
