The Beach Plaza Hotel
1401 Collins Ave

This 55-room crash pad is one block from the beach, in a prime South Beach party location. Moroccan Gardens and free breakfasts are highlights, but unlike the similarly priced Hotel of South Beach or the Albion, there's no pool. Basic rooms are tiny, but upgraded rooms have plasma TVs, DVD players, and iPod docks.

Chelsea Hotel
944 Washington Ave

South Beach's pricier take on the youth hostel. To some, the clean rooms (renovated 2008), prime locale, and fun vibe make the Chelsea a reasonable pick. Free Wi-Fi and a nightly happy hour with free drinks add value. But there's no pool or beach service. The hotel is best for low-key couples and groups of friends who want to be in the heart of South Beach; families should look elsewhere.

Hotel Shelley
844 Collins Ave

The 49-room Hotel Shelley is a mid-range, boutique property with a classic Art Deco exterior, situated in a prime South Beach location a quick walk from restaurants, nightclubs, and the beach. Commons spaces include a small front porch area and a stylish lobby with lively bar that features a nightly happy hour with free drinks, plus hookah offerings and even live DJ entertainment. But there's no other extra property features here -- no restaurant, breakfast, or gym, not even an ice machine or an elevator. Rooms are small and without views, but modern and stylish with modern amenities like minibars and Sony stereos. Perks include free shuttle service to the airport and VIP passes to area nightclubs. It's a competitively priced option for the area, though travelers looking for larger rooms might consider the Casa Grande Suite Hotel.

Clinton Hotel South Beach
825 Washington Ave

An affordable, comfortable, clean hotel that's two blocks from the beach and surrounded by popular South Beach bars and restaurants. The Clinton offers more than most small-scale budget boutiques -- free Wi-Fi, a sunny courtyard, Kama Sutra kits, and a popular hot tub with food and drink service. For the price, it's an excellent pick.

Crystal Beach Suites Oceanfront Hotel
6985 Collins Avenue

The 84-room Crystal Beach Suites Hotel is a budget North Beach hotel. This value beachfront property has a number of nice amenities including a palm-shaded outdoor pool, fully equipped gym, and a breakfast room, plus 24-hour front desk service. The Standard Suites are a bit old-fashioned, but are spacious with kitchenettes and sitting rooms. The Premium Suites are more modern and polished. The location, though, is removed from the livelier South Beach scene. An alternative option may be the more centrally located Crescent Resort On South Beach. Both continental breakfast and Wi-Fi are free.

James Hotel
1680 James Ave

It would be hard to walk past the James Hotel without noticing it: the 50-room, value property is covered in a chaotic animal motif in an array of colors. The wacky decor continues into the lobby, but the guest rooms are a stark contrast -- the simple, no-frills spaces have little decor and are a bit dated, but they're spacious and have mini-fridges and microwaves. The hotel offers few amenities, but parking is free and the convenient location is just two blocks from the beach. Decor will certainly not suit all tastes; travelers seeking a hotel with a more traditional aesthetic should compare rates with The Clay Hotel, an affordable boutique with Old World charm.

Leslie Hotel
1244 Ocean Dr

The 35-room upscale Leslie Hotel is an Art Deco property on Ocean Drive in the heart of Miami’s South Beach. Built in 1937, the Leslie combines old school glamour with a stylish, contemporary sensibility plus up-to-date comforts and conveniences. Guest rooms, which come with Bluetooth music systems, minibars, and free high-speed Wi-Fi, are impeccably stylish with gorgeous bathrooms. Hotel features include a rooftop pool and terrace bar plus a spacious and well-equipped gym and business center. The hotel's organic breakfast is free, and the on-site restaurant, Cala Cafe, receives enthusiastic reviews. For an even more luxurious stay, the neighboring Tides Hotel offers individual concierges, though rates will be higher.

The Miami Beach EDITION
2901 Collins Avenue

After a complete revamping of the former Seville Hotel, the Miami Beach EDITION opened in December 2014 to provide hip, luxury accommodations in the burgeoning Mid-Beach area. Mimicking the hotel's overall design, the 294 sleek, spare guest rooms feature light woods and white fabrics. Amenities are undoubtedly top-notch: There are two outdoor pools; a beachfront with chairs and umbrellas; fine dining Matador restaurant; an upscale spa; and an underground nightclub/bowling alley/skate rink. While couples, families, and business professionals all frequent the hotel, the EDITION appeals primarily to trendy travelers who will appreciate the Beats Bluetooth speakers and copy of PAPER magazine in each room.

Chesterfield Hotel & Suites
855 Collins Avenue

A boutique hotel in the trendy Art Deco District of Miami’s South Beach, the Chesterfield Hotel attracts active party animals, relaxing beachgoers, and international vacationers who value proximity to nightlife, restaurants and bars, shopping, and the ocean. With a charming and hip interior aesthetic, rooms with hardwood floors and whirlpool bathtubs, and an on-site bar that offers daily happy hours, guests are encouraged to relax and mingle between excursions to the beach, local hotspots on Ocean Drive, or nearby Wet Willies. A pesky resort fee is added on to the room rates, but it includes freebies like shuttles to the airport and Wi-Fi.

Lincoln Arms Suites
1800 James Ave

The mid-range, all-suite Lincoln Arms Suites is in the heart of Miami's historic Art Deco district, convenient to the city's beaches, restaurants, convention center, and nightlife. The studio and one-bedroom suites are clean, contemporary, and spacious with 42-inch plasma TVs, sitting areas, and full (and fully equipped) kitchens, though bathrooms are comparatively small and guests sometimes complain about thin walls. The hotel's main hangout spot is an astroturfed rooftop garden terrace with excellent skyline views and cushioned lounge chairs. However, there is no on-site pool, gym, bar, breakfast service, or restaurant, though the hotel offers free nightly happy hour drinks and pool-use at nearby sister hotels. Lincoln Arms tends to be competitively priced -- the Pestana South Beach Art Deco Hotel across the street adds a pool and restaurant, but can be twice as much.
