Eden Roc Miami Beach Resort
4525 Collins Avenue

High-up in Miami Beach -- $20 taxi to the South Beach action -- the only real draw to the location is the pricey wining and dining at the snazzy Fontainebleau resort next door. However, with three infinity pools, 631 comfortable rooms, and a wonderful spa, the Eden Roc is a cheaper (yet still high-quality) alternative for folks doing business at the Fontainebleau.

Hilton Cabana Miami Beach
6261 Collins Avenue

Opened in June of 2014, the 231-room Hilton Cabana Miami Beach is an upper-middle-range hotel on 63rd St. and Collins Ave in North Beach. Retro guest rooms and suites have pops of color, flat-screen TVs, iHome docking stations, and (in some cases) balconies. As some rooms face a wall, ocean-view and oceanfront rooms are worth the upgrade. Amenities include a wide beachfront with loungers and umbrellas (for a fee), two swimming pools, a French-inspired restaurant, two bars, and a 24-hour fitness center. But the hotel is far from the nightlife found farther south, so it's best for families or couples seeking a beach stay. Those who'd rather be in South Beach should compare rates with the more upscale Redbury South Beach, often only slightly pricier.

Royal Palm South Beach Miami A Tribute Portfolio Resort
1545 Collins Avenue

This beautifully restored, 393-room beachfront property is a modern reincarnation of Miami’s first luxury hotel -- The Royal Palm. Highlights at The Royal Palm, Miami-South Beach (formerly The James Royal Palm) include two swimming pools, two restaurants, three bars, a full-service spa, stylish rooms, and a great address on swank Collins Avenue. The rooms are modern and sophisticated, with original paintings by local artists. Guests have to pay a daily “beach fee,” but they get a lot in return, including free bikes, beach chairs, and a welcome basket with a bottle of water and fresh fruit.

Albion South Beach
1650 James Ave

The 100-room, upper-middle-range Albion is one of the best values in South Beach, with a location just blocks from the beach and Lincoln Road Mall. Art Deco-inspired interiors are stylish and cute, and an extensive art collection owned by the Rubell family -- best known for its Studio 54 connection -- is displayed throughout the common spaces. Rooms are clean and modern, with a stylish, nautical-inspired navy and white color scheme, and great amenities such as free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and iPod docks. The pool is a lovely spot for a quiet day in the sun, and the lounge offers poolside food and drinks service until the late afternoon. The hotel also features a tiny fitness center and meeting space, but there is no on-site parking, and the fee for valet service is steep. Young partygoers may want to compare rates at the Catalina Hotel.

Townhouse Hotel
150 20th St

Located right on the beach, the Townhouse offers bright, stylish rooms, but little else. Still, it's a great, comparatively clean alternative to the sketchy, similarly priced hotels throughout South Beach. Young singles might appreciate the Townhouse's proximity to clubs and the mix of good-looking Europeans spending the night.

Hotel Victor
1144 Ocean Dr

The upscale Hotel Victor has a polished, beach-house ambience, and its 91 guest rooms are kitted out in a sharp blend of natural fabrics and stylish unfinished wood. Located right on wild Ocean Drive, the hotel has a low-key outdoor pool and views of the beach across the street. There's a coed hammam and private treatment rooms in the spa, plus two on-site restaurants, including a sushi bar. A daily resort fee covers use of beach towels, access to the spa, and fitness center. For a less expensive option, the Riviera Hotel & Suites South Beach has a more thoroughly boutique vibe with Latin flair plus a free evening cocktail hour.

Catalina Hotel & Beach Club
1732 Collins Avenue

The 190-room Catalina Hotel is an upper-middle-range property comprised of three retro buildings on Collins Avenue, across from the beach. Funky, trendy interiors attract young partygoers who cool off at the rooftop pool, under misters at the poolside bar, and in the bamboo garden pool. Two hip restaurants offer street side dining and popular among guests are fours bars, including a happy hour with free drinks. Stylish rooms feature colorful decor, flat-screen TVs, and minibars, and upgraded rooms have sitting areas. Travelers seeking an on-site gym and spa, however, may want to compare prices with those at the Mondrian South Beach.

1 Hotel South Beach
2341 Collins Avenue

The luxurious, 426-room 1 Hotel South Beach in Miami Beach opened in March 2015 after a complete renovation (it was formerly Perry South Beach, and the Gansevoort Miami Beach before that). The 1 Hotel brand is extremely eco-conscious and the entire hotel has environment-friendly features including salvaged wood, hemp mattresses, and take-home socks instead of disposable slippers. Top-notch amenities include direct beach access; four pools, including one on the roof; three bars and fine-dining restaurant; fitness center; event spaces; and Tesla car service within a three-mile radius. The property is relaxed, so if you're looking for a bigger party vibe, check out the nearby Delano or The Confidante.

Pelican Hotel
826 Ocean Dr

The upper-middle-range Pelican Hotel is a boutique property set in a classic piece of Miami Modern architecture and owned by Italian fashion brand Diesel. Its the quirky and kitsch interiors that really steal the show, brimming with hand-picked one-offs and retro props that make this one of Miami's most original hotels. Although some are starting to look a little shabby, the 30 themed guest rooms are witty and fun with genuine vintage antiques; some offer ocean views though most overlook neighboring buildings. While facilities are limited, the street-front cafe and bar are popular and buzzy, plus free cocktails can help guests get in the mood. If lack of pool is a deal breaker, however, check out the more minimalist, party-focused Shore Club hotel up the coast.

Metropole South Beach Hotel
635 Collins Ave

Relaxed and private (rare for South Beach), the Metropole draws families and low-key groups to a quieter, shopping-focused street one block away from the beachside party scene. Well-equipped apartment-style rooms come with full kitchens and private bedrooms, though they're showing some minor wear. The hotel has free Wi-Fi, a free hour of drinks at sister property, and a pet-friendly policy, but lacks other amenities -- there's no gym and just a tiny, shallow pool. For a property with more amenities, the nearby Savoy Hotel is a solid pick with suite-style rooms as well.
