Hotel PF
Calle Florencia 61, Col. Juarez

Plaza Florencia is a straightforward, mid-range hotel with a walkable location in Zona Rosa. The hotel was built in the late '70s but is well-maintained and includes high-quality wood furniture and beams -- especially in the lobby. Each of the 142 pleasant guest rooms is well-lit and has a flat-screen TV. There are two restaurants, one of which serves a breakfast buffet. Wi-Fi and parking are free, but expect to pay extra for breakfast and coffee in the rooms. Guests are either here on business or for the tourist-friendly neighborhood, and no one really lingers on the property. For a hotel in the same neighborhood with more pizazz, check rates at Room Mate Valentina.

The St. Regis Mexico City
Avenida Paseo de La Reforma 439, Colonia Cuauhtemoc

The St. Regis is one of the best luxury hotels in Mexico City. Its location on bustling Avenida Reforma means immediate access to the entire city, but the hotel packs resort-style amenities into a skyscraper for guests who don't want to explore. Features include Remede Spa with an indoor swimming pool, a modern fitness center, and eight restaurant outlets. Each of the 189 spacious guest rooms and suites comes with 24-hour butler service for free assistance with unpacking, laundry services, and morning coffee delivery. The downfall? Extra fees for breakfast, parking, and Wi-Fi in the guest rooms. The Four Seasons down the street has nicer business services, but the rooms aren't as modern.

Hotel Plaza Revolucion
Calle Jesus Teran 35, Colonia Tabacalera

The three-pearl Hotel Plaza Revolucion is a quiet, clean, and straightforward hotel in a good location off the Paseo de la Reforma. It’s walkable to the Palacio de Bellas Artes and the Alameda, and the Monument to the Revolution is just five blocks away. The 85 rooms are clean and pleasantly modern, with wooden floors and amenities like air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi, but they lack coffee- and tea-making facilities and many face a brick wall. While it’s a solid base, there’s little to set this property apart from others in the area; the only features are secure parking, a small bar-slash-breakfast room, and a fitness room that’s limited to two cardio machines. It’s worth comparing rates at Room Mate Valentina, which has a cooler vibe and better Zona Rosa location.

Crowne Plaza Hotel de Mexico
Calle Dakota 95, Col. Napoles, Del. Benito Juarez

The upper-middle-range Crowne Plaza Hotel de Mexico is well-located and especially well-equipped for business travelers. It's across from the World Trade Center, which includes a convention center, restaurants, and shopping, and the hotel offers easy access to many businesses in the city. Both the public spaces and guest rooms are functional and provide the requisites, but they could use some updating. The on-site restaurants, fitness center, and spa are nice amenities for busy travelers. For a hipper hotel with more up-to-date decor, travelers could try Room Mate Valentina.

Live Aqua Urban Resort Mexico
Calle Paseo de los Tamarindos No. 98, Col. Bosques de las Lomas

The 135-room Live Aqua Mexico City Hotel & Spa is a luxury property in the upscale Bosques de las Lomas neighborhood, far to the southwest of the city center. It's connected to a high-end shopping mall, and guests can drive to the Santa Fe financial district in less than 10 minutes. Rooms and suites are sophisticated and stylish, and come with luxe extras like Nespresso machines and premium bath products. The restaurant and bar get good reviews, and they're as stylish and chic as the rest of the hotel. Other offerings include a full-service spa, modern fitness center, and business center. Travelers who'd prefer to be closer to major tourist attractions could check out the Four Seasons Mexico City, which adds a pool to its Paseo de la Reforma address.

Las Alcobas
Ave. Presidente Masaryk 390, Col. Polanco

The 35-room Las Alcobas Mexico DF is a jewel of a luxury boutique hotel in the exclusive Polanco neighborhood, within walking distance of restaurants, bars, boutiques, and museums. Public spaces are quiet, intimate, and harmonious, and the two on-site gourmet restaurants draw local foodies as well as guests. Rooms are modern and sophisticated, with high-tech touches, and the stylish spa uses indigenous ingredients in many of its treatments. Special services include bath butlers and free wake-up calls offering guests a choice of coffee, tea, or smoothie. Be aware that children must be at least 7 years old to stay here.

JW Marriott Hotel Mexico City
Calle Andres Bello 29

The 312-room JW Marriott Hotel Mexico City is a luxury property with a posh location in Mexico City's Polanco district. It faces Chapultepec Park and is within walking distance of numerous restaurants, boutiques, nightlife, and museums. Rooms are modern and sophisticated, and outfitted with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and air-conditioning. Unfortunately, only upgraded rooms have free Wi-Fi. There are two restaurants and a bar, and higher category guests get access to the Executive Lounge. An outdoor pool and small spa are welcome perks in the busy city center. Events take place in elegant meeting rooms, and there's plenty of on-site parking. Travelers looking for an even more luxurious experience could check out The St. Regis Mexico City instead, where free butler service is provided and there's an indoor pool.

Zocalo Central
Avenida Cinco De Mayo 61

The 105-room Zocalo Central is an upper-middle-range boutique hotel with a prime location overlooking Mexico City's Zocalo and Catedral Metropolitana. It's literally surrounded by amazing historical attractions, and tons of museums are also within walking distance. Shopping and dining is all around as well. Rooms are modern and attractive, and come with flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and coffeemakers. Some have excellent views of the Zocalo. The rooftop restaurant also provides nice views of the square, and breakfast is free. Other freebies include parking, Wi-Fi, bottled water, and fruit. As an alternative, the nearby Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico is another elegant historic property, with more bells and whistles (but higher rates).

The Red Tree House
Calle Culiacan 6, Colonia Condesa

The seven-room, upper-middle-range Red Tree House is a bed-and-breakfast housed in a converted 1930s residence with a warm and inviting charm. The property is located in the uber-trendy Condesa neighborhood, a residential area full of cafes and galleries. Individually decorated rooms are eclectic and colorful, featuring flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. Many have balconies and some even have full kitchens. The free breakfast includes a rotating local special and is served in the tree-filled courtyard. Free beer and wine are also offered every evening, though the property isn't suitable for guests with children under 8. Those needing a more kid-friendly hotel may want to consider Hotel Geneve Ciudad de Mexico, which can arrange babysitting services if needed.

NH Mexico City Centro Histórico
Calle Palma 42, Downtown

Location is key at the 105-room NH Mexico City Centro Historico, which is in Mexico City's bustling Centro, one block from the Zocalo -- the city’s main square. This modern, three-and-a-half-pearl hotel is near attractions like the National Palace, Metropolitan Cathedral, and Templo Mayor archaeological area, and is surrounded by stunning historic buildings. There’s plenty of shopping and dining at its doorstep, too. Rooms are compact and fairly generic, with air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi, though they lack views. Features are limited to a simple restaurant and bar, and a basic gym. As an alternative, it’s worth comparing rates at the nearby Zocalo Central, which has more historic charm and a rooftop terrace overlooking the Zocalo.
