NH Madrid Lagasca

The three-and-a-half-pearl Madrid Lagasca has a great location right in the heart of upscale Salamanca neighborhood, amid world-class shopping and great restaurants. Similar to other NH hotels dotted around Madrid, this one has smart decor and limited amenities that attract an even mix of business and leisure travelers. The 100 rooms are modern and minimalist, outfitted with flat-screen TVs, minibars, safes, and hairdryers. However, many are on the small side and interior-facing rooms can be dark. Features include a buffet breakfast, bar serving drinks and light meals, a 24-hour gym with minimal equipment, and free property-wide Wi-Fi. It’s a 20-minute subway journey to the town center by Metro, so travelers wanting a more central location might prefer the Petit Palace Plaza del Carmen.

Dear Hotel Madrid

The 162-room Dear Hotel Madrid is a sharp three-and-a-half-pearl property with a prime spot on Gran Via, just west of trendy Malasana. Guests can walk to numerous restaurants, theaters, shops, and nightlife, as well as several major attractions. Rooms are modern and attractive, and equipped with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and safes. Some have furnished balconies with nice views of the city, as well as espresso machines. The 14th-floor restaurant and lounge provide exceptional views, as do the small rooftop plunge pool and terrace. The hotel has a fresh, friendly vibe that fits perfectly with this part of town. For something with just a few more features, check out Hotel Indigo Madrid-Gran Via instead. It's equally attractive, and also has a rooftop pool plus a fitness center.

Relais & Châteaux Hotel Orfila

Housed in a lovely 19th-century mansion with elegant interiors and a lovely courtyard, the 32-room Hotel Orfila oozes Old World charm. Spacious rooms have classic decor and great amenities such as smart TVs, free Wi-Fi, minibars, and jetted tubs. Some, however, may find the beige carpets, soft pastel hues, and original antiques a tad stuffy (or dated). The restaurant is known for its excellent seasonal cuisine and beautiful dining room overlooking a serene patio with wrought-iron furniture, and the lobby bar has a great cocktails menu. Airport transfer services and on-site parking are great perks, but the hotel lacks a gym and a spa. While location in an upscale residential neighborhood with plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops may be convenient for those looking to stay in a quiet area, most major attractions are a 25-minute walk away. The InterContinental Madrid has both a fitness and a wellness center, but lacks the charm of Hotel Orfila and is a little farther from the city center.

Eurostars Suites Mirasierra

This 182-room, all-suite hotel caters to business travelers and families who don't want to stay in the city center. The Mirasierra is convenient to Madrid's business district and convention center, and has several large, flexible meeting rooms that can host large groups or special events. Though the neighborhood lacks dining options, the sunny lobby atrium, poolside cafes, lobby bar and Japanese/Spanish fine dining restaurant offer great alternatives.

NH Madrid Sur

The NH Pacifico is a 62-room hotel outside of the center of Madrid. Rooms are big and bright with hardwood floors, lots of natural light, minibars, and work desks. Updated marble bathrooms have decent-sized showers. Some features aren't the most up to date -- there are still old tube TVs -- and there is a fee for in-room Wi-Fi. This no-frills property doesn't have many amenities beyond its generous breakfast buffet in a large, sunny dining area. There is also a small business center with Internet access and a big, modern lobby with plenty of space to lounge. However, the hotel's location is its biggest drawback. The property is adjacent to Vallecas (one of Madrid's more seedy neighborhoods) and is in the shadow of the busy M-30 Beltway.

Catalonia Atocha

Catalonia Atocha is a three-and-a-half-pearl business hotel located between Huertas and Lavapies in central Madrid. Its 138 rooms have sleek and simple interiors with flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and minibars. However, air-conditioning is centrally controlled. The choicest rooms feature private terraces, while high-end suites are posh and include glitzy details like gilded molding and gorgeous murals (complemented by modern furniture). Without a doubt, though, the hotel’s rooftop terrace with city views and a whirlpool is the property’s top prize. Other features include a breakfast buffet, a restaurant serving lunch and dinner, and a small business center. Travelers who'd like to make the step up to a luxury property might consider the handsome The Principal Madrid, with its chic interiors and prime Gran Via location.
