InterContinental Madrid

The 302-room, luxurious Intercontinental Madrid was designed to mimic an 18th century palace, with enormous chandeliers, gold leaf accents, fireplaces, marble floors and inlaid wood furniture. The Intercontinental suits top executives in town on business and guests who appreciate quality and attention to detail. Visitors can enjoy fine cigars, tapas and designer cocktails in the stylish Bar 49, or a gourmet dinner or piano-accompanied Sunday brunch in the elegant El Jardin restaurant. The fitness center is top-notch, and the small spa has two treatment rooms and a sauna. The hotel is within walking distance of Calle de Serrano, home to Madrid’s most exclusive designer boutiques, but it's a long walk or 10-minute subway ride to the city center.

Vincci Soho
Calle Prado 18

Located in the heart of Madrid's central Barrio de las Letras neighborhood, the upper-mid-range Vincci Soho is a stylish boutique hotel with sleek modern style set against an historic backdrop. The more stylized interiors are foreshadowed by the recycled CD lizard sculpture that adorns the classic building's exterior. Rooms and suites vary is size, according the the building's original floorplan, but suites do have walk-in rainfall showers and jetted tubs; some rooms do get street noise, though. The surrounding area is filled with historical attractions, designer shops, and restaurants, and public transportation is nearby. There is a private terrace, as well as a restaurant, although the notably good breakfast is a bit pricey. There are fees for breakfast, Wi-Fi, and on-site parking.

Tryp Madrid Cibeles Hotel
Calle Mesonero Romanos 13, corner of Gran Via

Housed in an historic building overlooking the Gran Via, the Tryp Madrid Cibeles feels grand when you walk through the columned lobby, although its rooms are more basic and its amenities few. Some rooms have balconies, slippers, and coffeemakers, in addition to views of the city, and many have enough room to sleep a full family or group of friends. The downside of the hotel's central location on the Gran Via is that many rooms get street noise well into the night. Although there are limited communal facilities, there is a rooftop terrace with seating and city views, and there is free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. Concierge and room services are available, as is an extensive buffet breakfast, for a fee.

Melia Avenida America
Calle Juan Ignacio Luca de Tena 36, Salida 8 De La A-ii

A modern, upper-mid-range business hotel on the outskirts of Madrid, the Melia Avenida America is popular with busy business travelers. The large lobby with big bright windows and minimalist furniture can feel cold, but the outdoor terrace and several restaurants are lovely. Rooms follow the same modern, minimalist style and have nice updated bathrooms; however, some rooms can be dark. Free Wi-Fi, 24-hour concierge services, parking, free round trip airport shuttle, and room service are offered. There are some shops and restaurants within walking distance, but it takes 20-minutes to get to central Madrid (or, a 35-45 minute bus ride).

VP El Madroño

El Madroño is not your typical mid-range boutique. All of its 66 rooms are stylish studios featuring kitchenettes, sofa beds in the living area, and up-to-date amenities, including flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. There isn’t much aside from several meeting rooms, an events hall with a striking glass ceiling, and a computer in the lobby. But the lovely garden with lush plants and seating areas is a rare find in Madrid, and location in upscale Salamanca neighborhood convenient for exploring the city. The property’s great rates don’t hurt either.

Ganivet Hotel

Ganivet Hotel is a mid-range hotel centrally located in a bustling area within walking distance of major attractions. It offers 151 clean, no-frills rooms with laminate floors, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and free bottled water. Decor is mostly generic but contemporary. There is not much by way of amenities -- just a breakfast room serving a solid buffet, a lobby bar, and a business center with two computers. But rates are great for such a central location, and on-site parking (for a fee) is a rare find in central Madrid.

Hotel Abalu

With 30 stylish, individually designed rooms, a cute bar open 24/7, in-room spa services, and extravagant amenities such as personal shoppers and Segway rentals, this small boutique could be a fun, quirky pick for a short city getaway. But the property is showing wear and tear, there are several pesky fees -- including for Wi-Fi and for use of in-room projectors -- and some rooms are small and a little overdone. Those looking to stay in a hotel with a focus on design may want to compare rates at nearby Room Mate Oscar, which offers a wonderful rooftop pool and bar, and larger rooms.

Axor Feria Hotel
C/ Campezo 4

This upper-middle-range hotel is a popular pick among business travelers for its close proximity to the airport and IFEMA exhibition center. It features 285 spacious rooms with laminate floors, contemporary decor, and flat-screen TVs. However, the hotel is light on property features. It offers a business center, several lounges -- including a Nintendo Wii gaming area -- meeting rooms, and a snack bar. But the hotel lacks a fitness center and a pool, and the restaurant is in the hotel next door. Those who want to explore Madrid’s attractions may want to note that there is no easy access to public transportation.

Prado Apartamentos
Costanilla Desamparados 4

The two-pearl Prado Apartments are clean and basic vacation rentals in central Madrid, with attractions, clubs, restaurants, and more all within walking distance. Almost all are large enough to accommodate families and groups, between the bedrooms and sofa beds, and all apartments have full kitchens. Rooms are updated, with Ikea-style furnishings, but do look lived-in, with wear and tear evident on the furniture, floors, and drapes. There is free Wi-Fi and airport transportation for a fee, but this property does not provide parking, facilities, or daily housekeeping.

Hotel Nuevo Boston
Avenida Aragon 332

The Hotel Nuevo Boston is an upscale, 163-room property located close to Madrid airport just off the road leading into the capital. Catering almost exclusively to business guests and overnight stop-overs, the hotel has the transient feel of an airport hotel but with a bit more charm than most. Rooms are fresh and modern with marble bathrooms and a choice of pillows. While there are a few similar hotels in the area -- such as the Maydrit Hotel and Axor Barajas Hotel -- rates are more than competitive and the outdoor swimming pool is a real bonus in the summer.
