Hilton Garden Inn Los Angeles Hollywood
2005 N Highland Ave

This 160-room hotel within a 10-minute walk of both Hollywood Bowl and Hollywood Boulevard is a clean, mid-range option. Rooms are modern if a bit generic, and guests on lower floors may experience some traffic noise at night. Property features include a small outdoor pool, a restaurant serving breakfast and dinner, a bar with happy hour specials, and a 24-hour snack shop. It's a decent value, aside from its high fee for valet parking – though families may prefer the nearby Magic Castle for its weekend all-ages magic shows, and the Loews Hollywood Hotel has great views and more features often for only slightly higher rates.

USA Hostels Hollywood
1624 Schrader Blvd

Due to its location just off Hollywood Boulevard and its plentiful free amenities, the budget USA Hostels Hollywood is one of the most popular hostels in Los Angeles. There are 15 dorm and private rooms with air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and en-suite bathrooms. Dorms have lockers with outlets and private rooms offer flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges. Breakfast is free and set up for guests to make themselves. Other freebies include a shuttle to the beach, tours and activities, towels, and linens. Days Inn Hollywood/Universal Studios is a good option for those who need more space, a private room, and a pool. For those who prefer a hostel experience, it’s worth comparing prices at Hostelling International – Los Angeles/Santa Monica which is just a few minutes’ walk from Santa Monica beach.

Sportsmen's Lodge Hotel
12825 Ventura Boulevard, Studio City

The upper-middle-range Sportsmen's Lodge and Hotel drips with style and design features that combine old and new Hollywood, with 190 sleek rooms loaded with colorful details. There are open common areas with trendy furniture, a pool and hot tub, simple but modern rooms, garden space, on-site dining, and free Wi-Fi. The hotel, has a party and business vibe, not necessarily one that caters to families (toys are not allowed in the pool, for example). Plenty of families still come, though, thanks at least in part to the free shuttle to Universal Studios. A more kid-friendly hotel is down the street at the Studio City Courtyard, which offers less snazzy decor but lower prices.

Best Western Plus Dragon Gate Inn
818 N Hill St

The 52-room, mid-range Best Western Plus Dragon Gate Inn is a solid bang for your buck. Catering to a range of guests -- European and Chinese tourists, Amtrak travelers, senior citizens, and Angelinos visiting Dodgers Stadium -- the hotel’s aesthetic blends in nicely with its Chinatown location. Some spaces are a bit dated, but the hotel is clean and well maintained, and in-room amenities include mini-fridges, Wolfgang Puck coffee, and free Wi-Fi. Gluten-free breakfast options and free martial arts classes are nice additional extras. Although most people make their way around L.A. by car, guests are only a few minutes from Chinatown on foot and a 15-minute walk from the Metrolink at Union Station. For something with a little more style and well-liked dining, check out the O Hotel instead.

Metro Plaza Hotel

The 80-room Metro Plaza Hotel is a budget property in downtown Los Angeles, near Olvera Street and Chinatown, and a six-minute walk to Union Station. The spacious rooms range from Studios to Kitchenette Suites; all come with free Wi-Fi, newspapers, and mini-fridges (but no coffeemakers), but the decor is mismatched and severely dated -- some rooms still have tube-style TVs. A continental breakfast is included in the room rate, and the fitness center includes a handful of cardio- and weight-training equipment. Coffee is available 24 hours a day in the lobby, and there's a public computer with Internet access, which guests can use for an hourly fee.

W Los Angeles - West Beverly Hills

The 297-room W Los Angeles-West Beverly Hills is an upscale all-suite hotel in L.A.'s Westwood, several blocks from UCLA. W Hotels are known for their hip decor and party atmosphere, and this one is no different, with a trendy restaurant (STK LA) and a hip lobby bar with a DJ. Serenity can be found at the luxe, 7,000-square-foot Bliss Spa. The vibe is Cali glam, and the attractive pool has private cabanas and a bar serving light fare. Guest rooms are large and stylish, with modern bathrooms and fun amenities. It may be worth comparing rates with the nearby and also upscale Palomar, but its pool's not as nice.

The Line
3515 Wilshire Blvd

Located in Los Angeles' Koreatown, The Line is an upscale design hotel with modernist interiors and a host of off-beat amenities. The scene here is young and hip, with two trendy restaurants, a cafe, and a nightclub popular with locals. There's also an outdoor pool, Linus bike lending service, and a design shop. All of the 384 guest rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows, some of which reveal stunning views of the Hollywood Hills and sign. The room decor features wallpaper designed to look like exposed concrete and objets d'art, which guests can buy. The minibar is extremely well-stocked with Korean snacks. But a major downside is ambient street noise and loud nightclub. Another cool option is the Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles, with quirky interior design details that combine industrial chic with vintage flair.

Mr. C Beverly Hills

Though the name claims Beverly Hills, the 138-room Mr. C (of the Cipriani brand) is really located in West L.A. In fairness, though, it is incredibly close to Beverly Hills and has the feel of some Beverly Hills hotels -- with large chandeliers, black-and-white Hollywood photographs, and a trendy pool scene. For those with ultra-discerning taste, the decor may better indicate what "posh" was a few years ago, but the rooms are sexy and sleek, and each has its own balcony. Those wishing for a true Beverly Hills hotel may consider staying at the Beverly Wilshire or the Thompson.

Hollywood La Brea Motel
7110 Hollywood Blvd

Hollywood La Brea Inn is located in the heart of Hollywood, just a few minutes' walk away from the Walk of Fame and many other tourist attractions, restaurants, and shops. This motel-like property offers 40 budget guest rooms equipped with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and refrigerators. But rooms are seriously dated, and there's little soundproofing. On-site parking is free -- a plus point in traffic-dense Hollywood -- and there's an outdoor hot tub, and a free basic breakfast is included in the room rate. Travelers may also want to consider the historic Hotel Hollywood, a nearby boutique hotel with clean guest rooms at only slightly higher rates.

Luxe Sunset Boulevard Hotel

Popular for weddings and conventions, this 160-room luxury boutique hotel in Bel Air may be far removed from the action of Santa Monica and Hollywood, but it offers extra amenities (pool with cabanas, bright fitness center, free business center) spread over an expansive seven-acre estate. Rooms start at an impressive 525 square feet, and are loaded with amenities like stocked minibars, coffeemakers with free coffee, bathrobes and slippers, and free Wi-Fi. For a hotel with an excellent Beverly Hills location and a glam L.A. vibe, consider SIXTY Beverly Hills, though rooms there are far smaller than the ones at Luxe Sunset.
