M by Montcalm Shoreditch London Tech City

The four-pearl, M by Motcalm, Shoreditch is a modern, tech-savvy hotel in London’s East End. With a Versace-inspired spa, a sleek restaurant, fitness center, and several extensive events spaces, it’s a haven for business travelers who need easy access to the city and top-notch meeting rooms. But it's less convenient for London’s major landmarks. The 288 spacious, modern rooms have lots of pleasing techy touches and range from Deluxe Doubles to huge Sky Family Suites with 37-inch HD LCD TVs, smartphones, and iHome docking stations. This is great value for an upscale hotel, especially given the Tech City location. Sightseers may want to consider The Grosvenor Hotel in Victoria instead.

Kip Hotel
Hackney Central Railway Station 19 Amhurst Road, Hackney Central

Opened in 2016, the 105-room Kip Hotel is a budget-friendly mid-range hotel in Hackney with bags of style. It’s immediate location, close to the station and high street, is a little rough around the edges, but the hotel embraces this urbane, slightly gritty, feel. Rooms are done up in cool monochrome, with large potted plants and eye-catching artwork adding some interest. The owners have a hostel in Edinburgh and the Kip Hotel borrows some of that space-saving design, with bunk rooms and shared bathroom options. There’s no restaurant or bar, but the reception does sell some local pastries and coffee in the morning. Rates are reasonable, but rooms are small and the location is a little out of the way, so expect plenty of train journeys. For a more central stay, consider Flemings Hotel, Mayfair instead.

Lamington - Hammersmith Serviced Apartments

The three-and-a-half-pearl Lamington-Hammersmith Serviced Apartments are scattered along a picturesque tree-lined street, a seven-minute walk from Hammersmith Tube station. These are sleepy, residential properties that are removed from most of central London's action. They range from studios to two-bed-two-bathroom apartments. For the most part, interiors are calm and muted, with a pleasing color palette of duck egg blues and pale grassy greens. While there’s no real design flair, furnishings are unobtrusive and clean with some thoughtful decor in more modern units. All apartments include LCD TVs, iPhone dock, weekly cleaning services, and free Wi-Fi. The fully-equipped kitchens and modern, bright bathrooms feel contemporary and generous. These apartments won’t suit everybody and those who are happy to pay more for typical hotel services should try nearby St Paul's Hotel instead.

Mowbray Court Hotel
28-32 Penywern Road Earls Court

The three-pearl Mowbray Court Hotel is an affordable mid-range property located in upscale Kensington. It’s a few minutes away from Earl's Court Road and the train station, on an appealing street lined with the stately townhouses that are typical of the area. Interiors here are simple, with functional, clean bedrooms, and a surprisingly stylish lobby area and workspace. The 138 rooms include tea and coffee making facilities, full-size Ebony bath products, free Wi-Fi, and HDTVs. Breakfast is included in the rates and is served in the hotel’s Diana Restaurant. Rooms are small and fairly unremarkable, and while nearby hotels can be cheaper, they often have shared bathrooms, shabby decor, and extra charges for Wi-Fi. For some extra space, try Hotel Indigo instead. It’s pricier but has generous, characterful rooms.

The Mandeville Hotel
Mandeville Place Marylebone

The four-pearl Mandeville Hotel straddles the fashionable Mayfair and Marylebone neighborhoods, giving it a particularly impressive location. It's situated on a stylish, yet peaceful, street with imposing Victorian Buildings, just a couple minutes from Oxford or Bond Streets on foot. Interiors pay homage to the artsy surroundings, with outspoken decor and vibrant wallpaper giving the hotel it’s signature characterful look. The 142 rooms include coffeemakers, Samsung HD TVs, well-stocked minibars, and free Wi-Fi. While they vary in style, bathrooms tend to be a decent size, though some are small. In the evening, the popular Reform Social & Grill comes into its own, with locals and tourists alike jostling for seats. Travelers seeking a more sedate stay and classic style could check out The Chesterfield Mayfair instead.

The Belgrave
80-86 Belgrave Road Pimlico

The Belgrave is a chic, mid-range boutique hotel that occupies four Georgian townhouses in a centrally located residential area. The Pimlico underground station is a five-minute walk and it's only a few minutes more to the transportation hub at Victoria Station for easy access throughout London. The 73 rooms are smallish but clean and contemporary, with lovely walk-in rainfall showers, free Wi-Fi, and coffee/tea facilities. Amenities are limited, but include free continental breakfast and a cozy lobby bar with a fireplace. Another possibility nearby is The Luna Simone Hotel, a less stylish, mid-range property with lower rates that offers a free English breakfast with table service.

San Domenico House
29-31 Draycott Place

History buffs and hopeless romantics will be dazzled by the 19 individually decorated rooms that make up this opulent yet intimate luxury property in the heart of Chelsea. Housed in an ornate redbrick Victorian building, guest rooms incorporate original architectural elements with sumptuous furnishings and finishes. Modern comforts -- like LED Smart TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi -- are also plentiful. Some rooms even include a terrace or balcony. The downside is that there’s little in the way of luxe hotel features on the premises. If you love the lush look but want more amenities, consider The Milestone instead: Its on-site perks include a fine-dining restaurant plus a health club with spa facilities, a fitness room and resistance pool.

The Egerton House Hotel

This exquisite luxury boutique hotel with just 28 rooms offers the elegance of a different time in England's history. Located in the upscale Knightsbridge neighborhood, Egerton House Hotel is a short walk from the famous Harrods Department store and renowned London museums. Rooms in this historic townhouse are individually decorated in rich fabrics, and have opulent bathrooms, free Wi-Fi, champagne on arrival, and candles at turndown. The common spaces are just as special, with a notable art collection -- including works by Picasso and Matisse -- and a gorgeous drawing room for afternoon tea.

Draycott Hotel

This 35-room combo of Edwardian townhouses is warm and intimate with a country home feel, and in a great location for exclusive West End shopping. With wonderful boutique perks such as the free English afternoon tea (guests at other hotels will have to pay at least a £15 premium to enjoy such a tradition), free pre-dinner champagne, and free hot chocolate before bed, it’s hard to find much at the Draycott to complain about. Unless, of course, your priorities are a pool and fitness center, both of which the hotel lacks.

The Dover Hotel

In an area filled with small hotels, the 34-room budget Dover Hotel doesn't stand out from its surrounding, but it offers an affordable stay in an excellent location. It's a quick four-minute walk to Victoria Station (with a direct express link to Gatwick Airport), and Buckingham Palace can be reached in 20. Decor is on the dated side and rooms are small, plus some floors share a toilet. Rooms do have small desks, flat-screen TVs, and tea- and coffee-making facilities, but there are no air-conditioning or mini-fridges, and noise issues are prevalent. A limited continental is included in all rates, as is Wi-Fi. It's worth paying a bit more at the stylish Georgian House Hotel, which has modern rooms and free made-to-order breakfasts.
