Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel
21 Lowndes Street Belgravia

The four-pearl Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel is an upscale boutique property in the heart of affluent Belgravia. It’s located on a picturesque corner of Lowndes Square, a short walk from Knightsbridge Tube station and upmarket Motcomb Street. Inside, it’s all city-chic furnishings and sleek design, with some distinctive artwork. The 88 air-conditioned rooms and suites include some upmarket accessories like Nespresso coffeemakers and tablets packed with local area information. Rooms vary in size, but all are finished to a high standard and include a decently sized marble-accented bathrooms. There is a well-liked bar and kitchen, which serves seasonal food, plus free bikes and access to the pool and gym at Jumeirah Carlton Tower. The nearby Egerton House Hotel offers even more stylish rooms, but at a higher price point.

The Gore – Starhotels Collezione

Opened in 1892, the 53-room The Gore London is a historic property in the affluent South Kensington area of London. The hotel draws on its past, with rooms that are quintessentially British, and adorned with original paintings and rich tapestries. High-end amenities include large TVs, Penhaligon toiletries, and Handy phones, but notably, there are no accessible rooms. The 190 Queen’s Gate restaurant is popular with locals and residents alike and serves British dishes with locally sourced ingredients. A rock 'n' roll bar is open late and has an extensive whiskey selection, plus there are three meeting rooms and a cozy library that doubles as a lounge. Rates are steep, even for this exclusive postal code. For a more budget-friendly stay, consider DoubleTree by Hilton, Kensington.

Novotel London Tower Bridge

The 203-room Novotel London Tower Bridge is an upper-middle-range hotel conveniently located near the Tower of London and an underground station. Interiors feature eclectic and modern decor -- the stylish Keepers restaurant is a standout, with good food to boot. Room decor is less interesting, but the spaces are large, accommodating up to four guests and featuring modern amenities like mini-fridges, rainfall showerheads, free Wi-Fi, and 24-hour room service. The hotel also has modern wellness facilities like a small spa area, a gym, and a sauna, as well as family-friendly amenities like a game room. The hotel lacks a dedicated concierge and parking, though, and breakfast costs an extra fee. The nearby Apex City of London Hotel is a comparable option with homier room decor, though its public spaces are less inspired.

Arbor City Hotel

The 115-room, three-pearl Arbor City Hotel is located in London’s East End, close to the well known area of Brick Lane. While it's a bit far from the city center's top attractions, it’s well serviced by public transportation. Modern rooms are a good value, especially considering the hotel opened in 2015, and all rooms have free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, and Nespresso machines. The hotel doesn’t offer an abundance of features, but it does have a restaurant with a bar as well as meeting rooms. Travelers could also check rates at Doubletree by Hilton London – Westminster, which is more centrally located and has a gym, cafe, and restaurant, but rooms are not as stylish.

The Marylebone

Despite being a fairly large property, The Marylebone Hotel goes to every effort to bring a boutique, homey feel to the place, from the plush, inviting lobby to the traditional British theme of the restaurant. The location is great -- Marylebone Village is relatively quiet, yet just five minutes from the capital's hubbub. The 257 rooms are smart but fairly cozy, and include marble bathrooms with robes and slippers. Some are on the small side, however. For a cheaper option nearby, there's the Holiday Inn Oxford Circus -- but it offers a lot less in the way of character.

Park International Hotel

There's very little to criticize at this upscale hotel, which is located within walking distance of popular museums and Hyde Park. It offers a generous free breakfast, a somewhat uncommon perk in London. Rooms are airy and elegant; some incorporate lovely Laura Ashley design and have pleasant views of the Victorian-style street below. Expect to see families gathering over a lively breakfast in the hotel's Orchid Room, and more mature travelers enjoying happy hour at the hotel's Checkmate Bar. Wi-Fi is free in the lobby.

London Bridge Hotel

In many ways, the London Bridge Hotel gets it right. The property offers elegant interiors with handsome cognac-colored leather chairs; on-site fine dining and classic cocktails; and sophisticated rooms, suites, and apartments with luxury toiletries and stylish furnishings. The property's central location near London Bridge, across the river from the City of London, makes it ideal for both tourists and business travelers. All guests also get free access to the multi-level Fitness First gym next door. The hotel is on the pricey side, though -- guests seeking a more affordable upper-mid-range property should check out the Hoxton in Shoreditch.

Holiday Inn London - Stratford City

The four-pearl Holiday Inn London - Stratford City benefits from a great location within the massive Westfield Stratford City Shopping complex near Olympic Village on the city's eastern edge -- though central London attractions are a bit removed. A world of shopping and dining options surrounds it, and the Stratford public transit stations are only a five-minute walk away. The 188 rooms are clean and spacious, with coffee/tea facilities and bright and modern bathrooms. The hotel has a full-service spa and 24-hour fitness center, several meeting rooms, as well as a good restaurant and bar with great views of Olympic Stadium. Wi-Fi is free but can be slow. A good alternative is the four-pearl Staybridge Suites London-Stratford City that’s in the same shopping complex, has comparable rates, and offers free breakfast and kitchenettes.

The Colonnade London
2 Warrington Crescent

The Colonnade is an upscale boutique hotel set in a Victorian property that oozes history and traditional elegance. Its Maida Vale setting is particularly pleasant while the nearby Tube connection makes getting into town easy -- gorgeous Little Venice is also just around the corner. While some rooms might look a little worn, amenities include personalized business cards on arrival, Frette Egyptian cotton bed linen, and luxury toiletries; suites are particularly sumptuous. Rates might seem high, but there's little to compare it to in the area, and The Colonnade makes for a quintessentially English place to stay.

Washington Mayfair Hotel

There are 178 guest rooms at the three-and-a-half-pearl Washington Mayfair Hotel, set in one of London’s most exclusive neighborhoods. Being a short stroll from Hyde Park, The Ritz, and Bond Street makes this a popular choice for those wanting to be in the heart of Mayfair. The hotel is surrounded by a choice of restaurants, but also has one on-site as well as a lounge bar and a small, simple fitness center with modern equipment. The guest rooms are contemporary and stylish, with air-conditioning and sharp bathrooms. There’s free Wi-Fi as well, but breakfast is not included in the room rate. Those wanting to have a spa on-site should check out the nearby Brown's Hotel as an alternative, though rates there are significantly higher.
