St Martins Lane London Hotel

St. Martin's Lane is a prominent design hotel with sleek, cheeky interiors and a fashionable A-list bar scene. Luxurious rooms have stylish white decor and adjustable mood lighting. The high price tags and is a downside, but the central location neighboring Covent Garden is a plus, as is the hip atmosphere.

Pestana Chelsea Bridge

The upscale, modern Pestana Chelsea Bridge Hotel & Spa London is in a quiet area that feels exclusive -- adjacent to picturesque Battersea Park and walking distance to Chelsea Bridge and public transportation. Its 216 rooms are spacious, and they include Family Rooms with sofa beds and Suites with lounges and extra bathrooms. All rooms have iPod docks, mini-fridges, large bathrooms with soaking tubs and separate showers, and a few have exercise bikes. But guests have complained about noise and patchy maintenance and housekeeping. Hotel features include a spa with an indoor pool, sauna, steam room, and small gym that's open 24/7. There's a bar that serves tapas, and a restaurant that offers excellent Portuguese and international fare. Travelers might want to also check out the Park International Hotel, which offers comparable rates and afternoon tea service.

40 Winks
6 Hills Super Centre 18 Victoria Avenue Castle Hill

A whimsical mashup of decor that's equal parts Jane Austen, Lewis Carroll, and Frida Kahlo, 40 Winks is a tiny boutique property in rapidly gentrifying East London that's a flight of pure fancy. The three-pearl property has just two rooms, and their bath is shared. There's also no in-room TVs. But guest find much more entertainment in the elegant 18th-century interiors. The property's owner, interior designer David Carter, cheerfully acts as concierge, but alas the location is a bit of a distance to London's top attractions, a ride away on the London Underground. Another option for a bed-and-breakfast with a dose of whimsy, The California provides a more central location, but less dramatic interiors.

St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel London

The 245-room St. Pancras Renaissance London is a romantic, dramatic hotel with a long history dating back to the Victorian era. High ceilings and period architecture were beautifully preserved during a £200 million refurbishment. The Booking Office Bar and Restaurant once served as the original ticketing office for neighboring St. Pancras Rail Station. Rooms are big with soaring ceilings and huge bathrooms, though character varies between the Barlow and Chambers sections of the hotel. Fees are high, for everything from Wi-Fi to filtered water.

Ibis London Shepherds Bush - Hammersmith Hotel
3 - 5 Rockley Road

West of central London, the lower-middle-range Ibis London Shepherds Bush is a moderately priced alternative to many of the high-priced hotels in the heart of the city -- the hotel is within walking distance of the Shepherds Bush tube stop, and it's about a 20-minute ride to Piccadilly Circus. The 128 rooms are compact, with built-in desks, wardrobes, and bookshelves, and include flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are small too, and have only showers, no tubs. The hotel's restaurant serves bistro fare as well as breakfast (for a fee). Travelers interested in a hotel closer to central London might want to consider the Comfort Inn Buckingham Palace Road, which isn't as modern as the Ibis but has larger rooms and similar rates.

Karma Sanctum Soho

The 30-room Sanctum Soho Hotel is a rock-n-roll-themed boutique option with an excellent Soho location, a few minutes' walk from Carnaby Street, Regent Street, and Piccadilly Circus. Rooms have extravagant details, like tufted leather doors, shimmery textured walls, and gold satin bedskirts, plus amenities like minibars, bathrobes, and free Wi-Fi. Note that the Crash Pad room category is appropriately named (that is, Crash Pads are tiny). The property's Remix restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as afternoon tea; the rooftop bar and hot tub are open 24 hours; and the former guest roster includes pop stars Britney Spears and Harry Styles. Travelers interested in a less scene-y hotel could check the rates at the nearby Nadler Soho, a boutique hotel on a quiet cul-de-sac just opposite Soho Square.

Native Hyde Park
206-214 Sussex Gardens Tyburnia

The 59-room Native Hyde Park is an apartment-style hotel in centrally located Paddington. Situated in an elegant London row house, the four-pearl property is across from charming Sussex Gardens. Apartment decor ranges from ultra-luxe to minimalist-chic, with flat-screen TVs, stainless steel and Bosch kitchen appliances, and bathrooms with heated towel racks and products from The White Company. Freebies include Wi-Fi, coffee, tea, and milk that's restocked daily. Higher-end flats can have more lavish bedding, bigger closets, and iPod docks. But there's little in the way of features: no room service, on-site parking, fitness center, restaurant, or bar. Some guests say there's noise on lower floors and some less-than-clean living spaces. Travelers seeking a quieter neighborhood and a better rate might opt for Grand Plaza Serviced Apartments in Bayswater.

Holiday Inn Express London-Newbury Park
713 Eastern Avenue, Newbury Park

The mid-range Holiday Inn Express London-Newbury Park is located about 40 minutes northeast of many London tourist attractions. It's a fine choice for travelers who want a reasonably priced property away from the bustle of city streets. The Newbury Park suburb is primarily residential with a handful of impressive parks and historic attractions. There's also a tube station five minutes' walk from the hotel. Like many Holiday Inns, this one has contemporary modern decor and is well-maintained. Rooms offer the necessities like flat-screen TVs, desks, and compact storage spaces. Wi-Fi and a breakfast buffet are both included. The out-of-the-way location makes this hotel much cheaper than many London properties. The Holiday Inn-Earls Court, which has similar amenities and is located a lot closer to the tourist attractions, costs a fair amount more.

The Hari

There are 85 rooms at this trendy hotel in London’s upmarket Belgravia neighborhood. Set between Buckingham Palace and Harrods, there’s plenty to explore on foot from here -- and plenty of retail therapy to be had at the nearby designer shops. The hotel has an excellent restaurant on-site, as well as a cigar terrace and a bar. There’s also a fitness center and free Wi-Fi. Rooms are stylish and contemporary, and the marble bathrooms add extra luxury. Those wanting to be right in the heart of Sloane Square should check out the historic Sloane Square Hotel as an alternative.

Church Street Hotel
29-33 Camberwell Church Street

Set across three townhouses in South London, the 31-room lower-middle-range Church Street Hotel is a good choice for comfort-seeking travelers who aren't afraid of something different. A full-on bohemian Mexicana experience, it's decorated in authentic Guadalajara tiles, religious knick-knacks galore, and plenty of Latin character. Though there's no full restaurant, a quality breakfast is served for a fee and a 24-hour Honesty Bar provides free tea and coffee, plus self-service alcohol and pastries for a fee. Rooms are charming and colorful, outfitted with flat-screen TVs, desks, and free homemade hot sauce. This isn't the best part of town and some bathrooms are shared, but guests seem to appreciate the freebies and funky, relaxed atmosphere. The less-eccentric Hamilton by Hilton London Waterloo is closer to the city center and has a restaurant and fitness center, but higher rates.
