The Nadler Liverpool
29 Seel Street

The Nadler Liverpool is the most recent incarnation of this 19th-century warehouse, and sympathetic renovation has retained much of its historic industrial flavor. The 106 rooms at this upscale property are smart and very 21st century, however, with impressive kitchenettes and the odd unexpected touch of luxury, as well as original timber trusses in some. The lack of bar or restaurant gives a bit of an unsociable feel to the place, though the location is great for hitting Liverpool's trendiest bars and eateries. It's slightly more popular -- and a tiny bit cheaper -- than the nearby Staycity Serviced Apartments, but Staycity's units all have fully equipped kitchens and separate lounge areas.

Hotel Indigo Liverpool
10 Chapel Street

Hotel Indigo Liverpool is a 151-room property in the central core of Liverpool. This bright, colorful hotel has a creative atmosphere with its whimsical wall murals, both in the reception and the rooms. Modern rooms are artistic, with bold use of color along with hardwood floors, stocked minibars, and clean, attractive bathrooms. There is a Marco Pierre White Steakhouse on-site along with an open-concept lobby and lounge. Located by the city's waterfront, Indigo Liverpool is a quick walk from Albert Dock, the Liver Buildings, and the Liverpool One shopping district.

Signature Living Hotel
56 Stanley Street

Signature Living is an upscale boutique hotel right smack in the middle of Central Liverpool, a close walk to Lime Street Station (with links to London, Wales, and Chester), Liverpool One shopping complex, Albert Dock, and the Matthews Street bar district. Each floor of the property has a different motif (such as a Moulin Rouge or James Bond theme) and offers spacious, distinctly decorated rooms set up to accommodate guests traveling in groups. Judging by the party/club atmosphere of the hotel, it seems more apt for larger groups (think stag/hen parties or one-night events) than for guests seeking single/double occupancy stays who may be greatly impacted by the noise, especially in the evenings.

Z Hotel Liverpool
2 North John Street

Z Hotel Liverpool is a simple budget property in Central Liverpool, close to many local shops, bars, and restaurants. With bespoke furniture and modern decor, this boutique hotel has an eye for style and gives off a very chic and stylish vibe. However, the 92 tiny rooms lack closets and privacy with frosted glass-walled bathrooms. It does have beautiful views of the city (especially on the upper floors), however, and is just a stone's throw away from the Matthews Street bar district and Lime Street Station, as well as Albert Dock and Liverpool One shopping complex.

Adelphi Hotel & Spa
Ranelagh Place

Built in the early 1900s, the upper-middle-range Adelphi Hotel & Spa is a grandly designed landmark centrally located near the Liverpool Lime Street Station, attractions, eateries, and pubs. Its 402 spacious rooms feature Old World architectural designs; suites offer four-poster beds and some also have whirlpool tubs. Two restaurants serve English and French fare -- with a busy breakfast service -- and there are three bars as well as a game room. Other features include an indoor pool, fitness center, spa amenities, and conference rooms. Opulent antique designs are reminders of the hotel’s glory days, but furnishings are a bit dated; for something more contemporary, travelers might want to consider the Titanic Hotel Liverpool.

Hope Street Hotel
40 Hope Street

The Hope Street Hotel is an upscale, 89-room property featuring an impressive meld of Victorian-Venetian and striking 21st-century architecture. The location isn't super-central, but it's a pleasant area well within walking distance of the city center. The quality of in-room amenities (such as underfloor heating) impresses, as does the rustic wood decor, but poor soundproofing can be an issue. A real highlight is the restaurant, one of Liverpool's best and a destination in itself. Unsurprisingly, rates can be high, especially at weekends, though midweek prices can dip dramatically.

Heywood House Hotel
Heywood House Hotel 11 Fenwick Street

The Heywood House Hotel is in many ways a fine, upscale property; it has elegantly converted interiors and luxurious extras, such as high-end toiletries and roll-top baths. The location of this 35-room, 18th-century building is also prime -- just minutes' walk from city center shopping and the Cavern District. Wi-Fi is free throughout. Lack of facilities, however, is a major shortcoming, as the property doesn't even have a breakfast room or room service. Given this, rooms can be a tad expensive, though deals seem to be frequent so it's worth checking for knock-down rates.

Days Inn by Wyndham Liverpool City Centre
James Street

The Days Inn City Centre Liverpool is a 154-room budget hotel set in the heart of Liverpool right next to James Street station. Location could hardly be more convenient for exploring the city center and well as providing super-easy access to the docks district. Lobby, rooms, and restaurant are all modern and pretty basic, with bright teal and wood laminate decor, but more than serve their purpose. Buffet breakfast is available for a fee, and Wi-Fi is free. While noise from the station isn't an issue, the odd boisterous weekender can sometimes be heard between rooms. Overall, it's a solid option for a good value hotel in a convenient central setting.

The Richmond Apart-Hotel
24 Hatton Garden

The Richmond is a classy, upscale hotel located in the center of Liverpool within walking distance of all its main attractions and transport links. There's more than a little glitz and glamor in the interior design, which extends to the bar and restaurant, though not so much to the guest rooms -- which can also suffer street noise. In-room amenities, however, are excellent and apartments can be configured complete with fully equipped kitchens. Wi-Fi as well as in-room bottled water and milk are free. Although not cheap, rates are a good value; the similarly priced chain hotels in the area aren't half as ritzy.

Holiday Inn Express Liverpool-Albert Dock
Britannia Pavillion, Albert Dock

This 135-room Holiday Inn Express is a mid-range, chain hotel with two notable stand-out features: its 19th century warehouse setting and Albert Docks location. Although many of the original period elements have been retained, the chain-style makeover of the interiors fall short of the building's potential. Rooms, however, are well-equipped and comfortable, all affording impressive waterway views. Overall, rates are good for what you get, though it's worth comparing prices to the nearby Premier Inn which might offer slightly better value.
