Hotel Eduardo VII
Avenida Fontes Pereira de Melo 5

The 137-room Hotel Eduardo VII is an affordable three-pearl hotel located in the city center, right by the Marques de Pombal roundabout.  Rooms -- although decorated in an outdated designs -- come with safes, minibars, and small TVs; some have city views. The restaurant and bar terrace offers city views from the 10th floor and there's a charming (albeit dated) billiards room. For those willing to pay slightly more, the HF Fenix Urban offers simple, but undoubtedly more modern, furnishings.

VIP Grand Lisboa Hotel & Spa

The 295-room VIP Grand Lisboa is a mid-range hotel outside of Lisbon's city center. Though tourists may not love the location -- unless they are visiting the nearby bull ring -- the hotel attracts numerous business travelers who are working in the area and want close proximity to the airport. Hotel features include eight meeting rooms, a small spa, a fitness center, and a rooftop pool. There are also two restaurants, one serving a breakfast buffet and the other serving lunch and dinner in an upscale setting with dim lighting. Rooms are contemporary; all have sleek, dark wood furniture and large flat-screen TVs, but they are on the small side, and the lack of full shower wall or curtain makes it difficult to bathe (there is a privacy shade for the glass wall the shower shares with the room, at least). All in all, this hotel is a solid upscale option for those who do not need to stay in the city center (a metro stop is just a three-minute walk away).

Residencial Roxi
Avenida Almirante Reis 31 3

Residencial Roxi is a budget hotel in a convenient location near a metro station and within walking distance of the city center. The 16 rooms at the hotel are dated, with tube TVs and out-of-style curtains, plus some have shared bathrooms. But it could be a challenge to find a better option at such a low rate and so centrally located. There’s no elevator at the hotel, which could pose a problem for guests with limited mobility. The neighboring areas are a bit shady, and guests should take precautions with belongings -- there's also a safe at the front desk for valuables.

My Story Hotel Rossio
Praca Dom Pedro IV 59

The charming, three-pearl My Story Hotel Rossio is conveniently located in downtown Lisbon's Rossio Square, close to attractions, entertainment, shopping, and dining options. From the lobby to the rooms, the interiors are trendy and tastefully mix modern, industrial, and elegant styles. Its 46 chic rooms are small, but offer amenities like minibars, mirror TVs, and free Wi-Fi, plus some have great views of Rossio Square. There's not much in the way of facilities besides a fashionable restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating that serves traditional Portuguese fare -- but the hotel's location is hard to beat and the service is generally reported as wonderful. The nearby Rossio Garden Hotel is an alternative option with a rooftop terrace and similar prices.

LX Boutique Hotel

LX Boutique Hotel is a charming little boutique property housed in a turn of the 20th-century building that's been lovingly restored and revamped as a contemporary boutique hotel. The 61 rooms here have pastel color palettes and sleek bathrooms, and many have city views. That said, a marked lack of storage space may put some guests off and rooms on lower floors get some street noise, particularly from area nightlife. The restaurant serves a curious mix of tapas and sushi, and the hotel sources pastries from a popular local bakery for their breakfast service. Occasional wine tastings and Fado concerts are a fun touch. Hotel NH Collection Lisboa Liberdade may be a better option -- while it lacks a gym, it does have a swimming pool.

Altis Grand Hotel

With 300 rooms, the Altis Grand Hotel is the largest property in the Altis chain. Elegant rooms are a decent size with plush bedding, marble bathrooms, and TVs embedded in the mirrors. A major renovation was completed in 2011, and rooms feel fresh and contemporary. The hotel's long list of amenities includes a restaurant on the 12th floor with great city views, a cozy lobby bar, and a coffee shop. The Altis also has a health club with an indoor pool, fitness center, and several treatment rooms. While this property has a reputation as a business hotel, it also attracts tourists with its convenient location near numerous attractions. A spacious marble lobby features large art installations and plenty of space to sit. However, some guests have complained that the breakfast buffet is a little disappointing, and there's a pesky fee for Wi-Fi in some rooms.

Typical Lisbon Guest House
Avenida Antonio Serpa 26 3 Esq., Near Campo Pequeno

The Typical Lisbon Guest House is a small bed-and-breakfast in a 1930s building near Campo Pequeno, about 20 minutes outside of the historic center. This lower-middle-range property has 11 well-maintained rooms decorated with charming vintage decor and equipped with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. However, all guests must share bathrooms. Period details highlight the building's history: wrought-iron balconies, hand-carved wooden doors, and stained wooden floors. Breakfast is free and well-received, and guests can dine on a terrace offering views of the nearby residential neighborhood. A shared kitchen is provided, and restaurants and public transportation are within short walking distance. Travelers could also consider the Whatever Art Bed & Breakfast, an artsy guest house close to Campo Pequeno bullring.

As Janelas Verdes, a Lisbon Heritage Collection

The Verdes Inn is a charming boutique overlooking the Tagus and situated next to the Museum of Ancient Art. This 29-room hotel, part of an historic 18th-century palace, lacks the amenities of a larger hotel -- there is no spa or fitness center, and the business center consists of a desktop computer -- but the hotel's intimate size is part of the appeal. Guests come for the cozy (if simple) rooms and gorgeous common areas. Decor wouldn't look out of place in an upscale beach cottage; the antique-filled, wood-paneled library has an attached terrace overlooking the water that lets in a lot of natural light. And the garden area, surrounded by ivy-covered walls, is welcoming. The rooms aren't luxurious but they are attractive, with a pastel color scheme and floral curtains. But although nightlife and a couple of museums are within walking distance, serious tourists (as in those planning on exploring all day) may consider staying in a more central location along Avenida de Liberdade. Still, the Verdes Inn is a great spot for guests wanting gorgeous views and a quaint setting.

Hotel Lisboa Plaza, a Lisbon Heritage Collection
Travessa Salitre 7, With Av. da Liberdade

The 94-room Hotel Lisboa's is an elegant hotel in a central location, just off of Avenida da Liberdade and within walking distance of numerous sights. Unlike some of the smaller Heritage hotels, Hotel Lisboa features a cafe that serves light meals and a fitness center (though it's tiny), as well as great common areas. The luxurious lounge, dubbed the "Chill Out Room," features plush furniture, paneled ceilings, and fresh flowers, while the rooftop terrace is lit up at night and has a (non-alcoholic) honesty bar. The rooms are simple but charming; half have antique-style mahogany furniture, and the other half are more modern, but all are meant to evoke the feel of a Portuguese home. Marble bathrooms have shower/tub combos and bidets. All in all, this is a solid option, but it's also worth considering the hotel's nearby sister property, Heritage Avenida Liberdade Hotel.

Dom Pedro Lisboa

The 263-room Dom Pedro Palace is a classic, elegant hotel that caters to business travelers and couples looking for more amenities than one would find at a boutique. The dimly lit lobby makes an immediate impression upon entering the hotel; it features opulent touches such as marble columns, statues, and gilded furniture. The classic look is less opulent in the rooms, where the color scheme of reds, blues, and golds looks a bit dated. The long list of amenities includes two restaurants, several meeting rooms, a spa, trendy indoor pool, a small fitness center, and 24-hour room service. Though the hotel is not within walking distance of many attractions (and even those that are within walking distance can be a hike, since the hotel sits atop a hill), public transportation is easily accessible. Due to its location, guests can sometimes get a deal at the Palace hotel -- but pesky fees for Wi-Fi and parts of the spa make some guests feel nickel and dimed.
