Casa de Santos Bed & Breakfast
Rua da Boavista 102

The eight-room Casa de Santos Bed & Breakfast is a two-and-a-half pearl option in a quiet residential area just south of bustling Bairro Alto. The house, including the guest rooms, is attractively decorated with interesting tribal and ethnic artifacts. It's a cozy, homey place that gives guests a taste of Portuguese living. All rooms except the suite have shared bathrooms, and there's a fully equipped shared kitchen on each floor. There's also a shared living area, but reception isn't always staffed and there's no air-conditioning. Breakfast also comes at a fee and is served next door. As an alternative, the nearby Casa do Bairro B&B is another charming little property where all rooms have their own bathrooms.

Lisbon Lounge Hostel
Rua de Sao Nicolau 41

Lisbon Lounge Hostel is situated in the heart of Lisbon, near restaurants, bars, and city sights, just a four-minute walk from the metro and a six-minute walk from Rossio Square. The hostel's chic, artsy-design vibe (think bright murals and vintage accents), roomy lounge spaces, and excellent location make it popular among budget travelers. The hotel's 17 guest rooms are mostly made up of mixed dorms with shared bathrooms, though there are a few private options. Rooms are clean, but they're missing some standard amenities -- lack of in-room Wi-Fi and air-conditioning are the most notable. There are, however, a plethora of freebies like free breakfast, walking tours, pub craws, coffee and tea, and a spacious and well-equipped common kitchen. Travelers may want to compare digs with the nearby Living Lounge Hostel, which is run under the same management.

TRYP Lisboa Oriente Hotel
Avenida Dom João II, Parque das Nações

Tryp Lisboa Oriente is a contemporary three-and-a-half-pearl property built in the Park of Nations for the 1998 World's Fair. It's convenient to the airport, trade shows, concerts, and casinos but most tourist attractions are at least 20 minutes away by car. The 207 spacious and stylish rooms have views that include the sea, train lines, and the city. A free breakfast buffet is served in a cheery room whose walls are embellished with international passport stamps, and there's a stylish lobby bar with windows overlooking the street. The hotel also offers free shuttle service to the airport with advance reservations. For a hotel in the same neighborhood with a pool, check rates at Tivoli Oriente.

Duas Nacoes Hotel
Rua da Vitoria 41, Near Rua Augusta, Santa Maria Maior

The Hotel Duas Nacoes is a simple and affordable two-and-a-half-pearl property with some stylish touches in the heart of Lisbon, a one-minute walk to shopping on Rua Augusta. About half of its 54 rooms have been renovated to include laminate wood floors and flat-screen TVs. Guests praise the Portuguese bread included in the free breakfast served in an elegant, high-ceilinged room with a fireplace. There's a TV lounge with a historic tile mural and a few rooms for meetings. Guests can use a nearby fitness center at a reduced rate, and Wi-Fi is free. Downsides include the property's noisy neighborhood and occasional cleanliness issues in some rooms. For a similar property, travelers might like the Hotel Americano.

SANA Malhoa Hotel
Avenida Jose Malhoa 8

Part of a business-focused chain, the 185-room SANA Malhoa is a well-maintained property located in Lisbon’s financial district. It has low rates that work for its somewhat removed location, which is a 20-minute metro ride to the city’s historic center. The restaurant, which serves a well-stocked buffet breakfast and weekday buffet lunch, has a nice outdoor terrace. It’s a bit more colorful and casual than its sister property, the SANA Lisboa Hotel, and has a bit of a throwback look, with 1960s-style decor, a cigarette machine in the small business center, and two smoking floors.

Dom Carlos Liberty Lisboa
Rua Alexandre Herculano 13

The 59-room Dom Carlos Liberty Lisboa is a mid-range hotel with a slightly retro feel located a few blocks from the luxury shopping district on Avenida da Liberdade. While the wood-paneled lobby looks quite ample and feels airy, other spaces upstairs, including the hallways and a lovely, skylit fitness center, are on the small side. Rooms have an elegant, understated aesthetic with wood-paneled headboards and recessed lighting. There are a good number of restaurants in the area, and the more casual downtown neighborhoods are a 10-minute bus ride away. Guests have described it as good value for this particular price range, which is on the low end for the district. There is free buffet breakfast and free Wi-Fi.

Fontecruz Lisboa, Autograph Collection
Avenida da Liberdade 138-142

Pricier than many hotels in Lisbon, the 72-room Fontecruz is an upper-middle-range hotel situated smack in the middle of tourist central, within easy walking distance of old town and up the street from the Hard Rock Cafe. The vibe is modern and artistic in the on-site bar, restaurant, and contemporary guest rooms. Gray and white dominate the color palette in the rooms, complete with minibars, walk-in showers, and big flat-screen TVs. The hotel has an attractive outdoor terrace with greenery and tables and chairs. With free Wi-Fi and great access to the metro, this is a reliable, stylish pick for those that don't mind spending a bit more money than they need to for a decent hotel in Lisbon. Expect to pay extra for a breakfast buffet and parking.

3k Barcelona Hotel
Rua Laura Alves 10

The 125-room 3k Barcelona Hotel is a lower-middle-range hotel situated in Lisbon’s financial district. This is an ideal location for the business traveler, but less appealing for tourists as the main attractions aren't within walking distance. Rooms are modern and simple with minibars and flat-screen TVs; some furniture could use a refresh. There is a charged breakfast buffet with a nice variety of hot and cold items, and room service is available 24 hours a day, but free, spotty Wi-Fi is only accessible in the public areas. Nearby public transportation is ample and for visitors with cars, garage parking under the hotel is reasonably priced.

Casa Amora Guesthouse
Rua Joao Penha no 13

The Casa Amora Guesthouse is a simple, charming inn, run and personally decorated by a designer. There are 10 individually decorated rooms (some of them duplexes), divided between two buildings. The three-and-a-half pearl property is set on a small, winding street in the pedestrian-friendly neighborhood of Rato, within walking distance of a plethora of quaint shops and restaurants, and less than a block from the lovely park Jardim das Amoreiras. An early 20th century construction renovated in 2012, the property complex features beautiful facade tile work and is tastefully outfitted with contemporary art prints and decorative mirrors.

Myriad by SANA Hotels
Lote 2.21. Cais das Naus

The 168-room Myriad by SANA Hotels is a luxury property set in a modern building overlooking the Tagus River. It offers one of the best spa and business stay experiences in Lisbon; features include a spa with a Turkish bath, sauna, and indoor pool, as well as three meeting rooms and a bridge connecting the hotel to a conference center. Rooms are contemporary and funky with swing chairs, river views, and espresso machines, though glass bathroom doors with limited privacy might not appeal to all guests. There’s a Mediterranean restaurant on-site and a bar with a scenic outdoor riverside deck and evening entertainment. For something less modern, guests should check out Pestana Palace Hotel, a gorgeous, luxury hotel in a 19th-century palace with huge suites available. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
